Hauling logs all day. Uncle Fred helped to, they had dinner here. Aunt Mary & Rose went over to Minnie’s fixing her dress, Rose smocked it. Leona brought Floyd to the Dr; cut his hand in chopping box, fingers nearly of [sic – off]; took him to the hospital at Belleville, to see what they could do. Gus Geodelle went along in, she stayed there with the boy’s. Henry Birkner’s, Glenn fell from L. Birkner’s sink in Hecker here Sun, & bit his lip & tongue in through, & had to take it also to hospital & have it clamped together. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening.

Friday, Jan. 31, 1936

Rose & Berti went out to Henry’s, cleaned, she [Leona] is still in bed yet; he went to E. St. Louis again today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came there awhile to; we were out nearly all day had dinner several people here from Columbia, Valmeyer, looking for sows & horses; our here yesterday, & got letter from one today; Miss Estelle Geodelle & Tunze of Columbia to be married tomorrow, had a shower, Herman Geodell’s daughter. Mr. Ed Classen, Freeburg Lumber dealer is in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital at Belleville, from a fractured hip, horse fell on him, went sleigh riding every day horse slipped, & by trying to help the horse, it fell on him, was taken in an ambulance. Mr. Fred Faust of Belleville, died will be buried tomorrow afternoon, church Catholic at Belleville then to Red Bud, cemetery Catholic; The Orbon Workers, have to present either at the house, or cemetery; he had been ill was taken to hospital, & returned again awhile back, now dead. When Jose [Josie] Keller was here on Christmas Day, going home she burned connecting rod out, had it repaired at Smithon [sic], stayed at Belleville, during that time; she wrote Aunt Mary a letter & told her about it; roads to slick, to come on her birthday.

Monday, Nov. 4, 1935

Raining all day. A Midwest truck driver fell asleep driving & ran off the road on the other side of John Brauns house in the ditch & upset, took so long to get them out, lot town people went down; to see it. Alsace Eckert had a accident yesterday at Belleville, she was cut in the face, & car is a total wreck, they said. Harold Wagner was here & drove his pigs in our yard, they had just bought them, & got out & ran away on them, were out on the hard road by Meng’s lane, he was looking for them all morning. Surely is raining something terrible going around in the north, getting colder, yesterday we had the doors open, we went to bed early; this evening.

Monday, Sept. 23, 1935

We washed, ironed, scrub basement, dye dress & Oh my. Papa went to Waterloo this morning, got chimney fixed for Henry, & this afternoon him & Rose went out to Henry’s, he is going to roll the ground, while Henry cuts corn, had lunch. It rained this morning, pretty nice shower; but not near enough, the sun crossed the equator, Equinox Days. Pap stopped at Emils & gave him his card from Clem; Uncle Adam got his foot hurt last Tues. they hauled ground in the chicken house the wagon ran over his foot, swollen quite a bit he can’t walk on it; never went to the doctor so far yet. The milk trucks, Wittenauer, Gregson & Brauns 2 trucks are hauling sand for Clarence Braun’s to built a new house on the corner by J. Brauns land; that is another getting married in the near future, she is taking instructions for religion at present, Stehl. Joe Griffins wife also took lessons; catholic religion. George Lorberg’s got there baby girl christened yesterday; Ivo Rapp & wife sponsors.

Sunday, Sept. 8, 1935

Went to Red Bud. Out to Uncle Fred’s dinner & supper. It rained a nice shower. Joe Griffin was annouced [sic] for 3rd time but the wedding was postponed, Mrs. Griffin is very low at present. Pete Kaiser had a head on collision car is total wreck, last Sun. at Belleville, 5 persons, were all taken to the hospital, he didn’t know nothing for 2 hrs. had a fractured skull; but is pretty good now. Holy Name Conference for men at Trenton today. We went to Paderborn to Totch’s to a free dance; & Boy! it started in to rain. Oh My!! the crowd started to leave, sure did have a crowd. Schoenborn & Schaefer played musci [sic]. Totsch’s served hot rump corn beef sandwiches. Kraemer & boys of Millsdadt, were going to fight, a constable made order, quite a few were feeling good. Geo. Mueth fell down outside, long as he was.

Saturday, Aug. 17, 1935

Papa went out to Henry’s. Clarence Wittenauer’s milk truck struck Henry’s colt & knocked it in the air, is awful bad, has a big hole in shoulder; Wittenauer has insurance, & he got the veterain [sic – veterinarian] out; & bandaged it up a little. Pretty serious they say. Henry, Dick, Grover, Emil, all up making hay had dinner, 2 loads here & took 1 load home; today & last nite; he broke the wheel of, so this morning he went up to get Emil’s wagon & had the colt loose & sure it had to get hit. Casper Horschmann has sale on the Barney Kaiser farm this afternoon. Al. May auctioneer. Ivo Buehler is moving Louis Voges from Sethfest farm to Cowell place in blackjacks, from which Esthers [Estkers?] moved to the bottoms, Aaron Papbenberg moved them. Freeburg Homecoming today. Donahues has a free dance tonite. Blossom City Boys playing. We went out to Henry’s to see the colt, it eats, but still lies down.

Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1935

Papa went out to Henry’s, digging potatoes this morning. Richard Crowe was also helping, he is 15 yrs. old today. We washed, ironed, had spring chicken dinner. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up. Henry came took the hay that was no good out of the barn & cut alalfa [sic – alfalfa], all had lunch here. Leona & kids came up & got him with the car. Clara Wagner & kids were over, George went to the Firemen’s meeting. Arthur Kuhns of Floraville had a accident Sun. nite, with a oil truck, had his arm torned [sic] open pretty bad had stitches in it by the Dr.

Friday, March 22, 1935

We planted potatoes. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary made garden up here today. We went to Belleville got spring hats, etc. Aunt Mary went to lent service tonight. Mr. & Mrs. Killiam Marquadt have a baby girl born, now have 3 children. Charles & Bernice Wagner are still in with cold & fever, but are getting better. Mr. Wm. Fritsche while riding a bycicle [sic] last Sun. evening fell of [sic] & fractured his tumbh [sic], pretty bad. Papa & Rose went out to Henry’s got mule, harrowed the oats in.

Wednesday, Jan. 2, 1935

Cleaned chicken house. Papa went to Red Bud to see Mr. Bergdorf, to see our heifer. Mr. Streck was here to see it Mon. evening, he offered $22.00. Henry said Fr. Aydt & Ed Parker, where here to see us Mon, we were at Belleville, they came out there thought we were butchering out there, they wouldn’t go in the house. Papa went to Waterloo, this afternoon. Berti went up to the Dentist he couldn’t finish it yet, forgot the filling again. The paper comes with the mail carrier every day, instead in the evening, the news gets old; paper says “Colton R feischneider,” of Belleville was critically injured & in St. Mary’s Hospital, auto mobile accident. We went to Geo. Wagners this evening, played cards, Pap & Rose, & Clara & Bert won 5 games; won every game; some hot playing. It also was Clara’s birthday; cookies, apples, root beer were served. We received a card from the Post office in St. Louis, stating there was a letter there & not enough postage on, required 1½ & so we sent it over, what it is, or where its from, we do not know yet.

Monday, Aug. 20, 1934

We washed, ironed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped for awhile, went to Red Bud. It rained all afternoon; & night. Floyd has his leg all bandaged, cut it with a hedge knief [sic].
