Saturday, Dec. 9, 1939

Henry brought load corn. We went out this afternoon helped him with his hog; Bert [Bertille] baked pies & chicken for tomorrow, they are coming up here to see us. Carlisle Morrison of Waterloo 52 & Wihelmina Zeneiss a nurse of Springfield, 53, who was a Co. nurse here in 1930 were married recently. Stolze of Belleville 73 yr. old man that married 27 yr old girl of St. Louis, she has left for 2nd time.

Thursday, Nov. 23, 1939

Thanksgiving Day. Leo & family came had dinner & supper here, he plowed potatoe ground. Rose [Rosalia] & Bert [Bertille] went to Red Bud to Wedding mass of Marcella Gregson & Leslie Heyl; very pretty wedding, bride had long train white Satin dress with short veil & her attendants 2 sisters, one in rust & green with veils & wreath to match dresses; Walter gave her away & best man were Robert Heyl & Cletus Gregson; during the ceremony a terrible earthquake, roared just shook the church, people all went out, for a few mins, some places it was awful bad. Jerome Cortner house Chimney was cracked & did damage several other places; some plaster fell in Red Bud church, Gregson & Heyl had wedding dance at Log Cabin & Jerome Schilling & Elizabeth Shields had there wedding dance at Pautlers. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here, then they went to Waterloo to dance, there is also one at Brezzy Hill tonite. Bill [Klein] came this eve. The Thanksgiving & Turkey dinner was a big run out of Turkey had to served pork sausage, had fed 600 at 2′ o clock – turkey was all; had awful crowd.

Friday, Nov. 17, 1939

Marita was sick last nite, vomiting & fever, they took her to Dr. Pautler’s this morn; were here all day he [Leo] & papa went in wood, to make posts for corn crib floor, had dinner & supper here. We packed things belonging to Bert [Bertille]; cleaned out cupboards; man here wanted bread. Seen in paper Jerome Schilling & Elizabeth Shields getting married Thanksgiving Day with dance at Pautlers Hall. Archie Wihel have baby girl – makes 2 girls & 1 boy in family.

Saturday, Nov. 11, 1939

Armistice Day. Ben Heyl came & Klotz got 3 heifers $75. Wittenauer H. was here, stopped in. We went to Uncle Fred’s awhile & then to Leo’s. this afternoon. Jac. Neff came on business for Uncle Fred this eve. Bert [Bertille] took Lees Gregson’s wedding present over to Emil’s for him to give to them; we never get to see Lee; at all.

Wednesday, Oct. 18, 1939

Becherer & Horcher were married yesterday morn. at Coloumbia [sic]. Rosalia came we stretched curtains today. Went to New Athens this afternoon to dentist. We had chicken soup dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary, Bill [Klein] got Leo [Orlet], all came this eve. we repapered spots in kitchen. Henry brought load corn. They had there baby girl christened Joyce Elizabeth yesterday. Mrs. Adolph Klube sponsor. Mr & Mrs. Elmer Haudrich have baby girl born Sun. also.

Tuesday, Oct. 10, 1939

Rained last nite & morning. Went to Belleville with 2 hogs; left Whip. by Bill [Klein] to fix he took us home in his truck, & fixed our pump, had dinner here. We got sweet potatoes & turnip ready to take to Belleville tomorrow. Dorothy Pautler – Phil Pautler’s daughter of Evansville & Jerome Harbaugh of Boxtown are being married this morn, dance at Boxtown tonite. Ben Heyl was here looked at heifers. Oll. Englerth & Bill [Klein] came this eve. Bill & Bert [Bertille] & Al. Karban & girl friend went to St. Louis to see Veil Prophet parade, “Gay Nineties” it was beautiful.

Thursday, Sept. 28, 1939

Bert [Bertille] baked pie. Pap dug all our sweet potatoes, 3 bus. Bert went out to Brand’s this afternoon. Fr. Simon is going around solicting [sic] for Belleville St. Henry’s College, to build some post to it, never came here. Mrs. Joe Schilling is pretty low. St. Everdine is home & all children there, doctor gave up all hopes. Lee Gregson & Vera Schmitz were married at Renault mass this morn; her brother groomsman & Mildren Rist bridesmaid, Lester Chaffeaur, dealers car going to go to Alba. tomorrow. Dan Schmidt of Waterloo & Regina Schoenborn of Belleville were married yesterday afternoon at St. Marys Rectory of Belleville.

Wednesday, Sept. 13, 1939

Went to Orlet’s. Pap made troughs etc.; picked potatoes through, had dinner & supper there. Sure hot. Leo & family came this eve. & pap went along to Waterloo church pinic [sic]. Bill [Klein] came down, we stayed at home. Lee Gregson & Vera Schmidt were published 1st time last Sun. here. Alvin Voges & Marcella Pabst having wedding dance at Log Cabin on Sept. 24; the day of Hecker’s Firemens pinic [sic] & fish fry.

Saturday, Sept. 9, 1939

Went to Waterloo this afternoon, sale of Mrs Wild Perry May Auct; not much of a crowd, things went cheap. A. [Aunt] Mary bought wash stand $1.40 & leniloum [sic] for kitchen $2.70. Frankie Englerth & Viola Einwich were married today, wedding dance at Brezzy Hill tonite. Bill [Klein] is invited to go. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came to get stand, we brought along home for them. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came to get Marita, had watermelon.

Friday, Sept. 8, 1939

Hot again today. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies. Seen in Waterloo paper Clarence Voges & Irma Burgdorf were married at Waterloo by Rev. Kaecheim, on Wed. Aug 30 at 4 o clock Mrs. Edwin Reheis his sister & her brother attendants.
