Schilling’s machine finished up threshing yesterday. The paper is just full of the people who died from the heat last week, awful hot weather, always 100-112 everyday, but now it is nice again, cool, it was just to hot, everything dried up. The St. Johns Catholic Church of Red Bud is having a Ice cream Social this evening & pinic there; we gave pair pillow cases. Henry & family came up this morning, pap & went along with them looking at horses again, down at Ames; all had dinner & supper here. Rob [aka Robert] & Bill [aka Willis/Willie] stayed here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, & then him, Henry & pap, went to Red Bud to look at Ratz’s horses, but didn’t buy any yet; they stayed for supper too. It rained, thundered tonight. Harold & Cyril Eichenseer was caught in our watermelon patch tonite, papa laid the law out to them, didn’t do no good, so he reported it to the old folks; watermelons are disappearing.

We washed, nice cool. Ronnenberg’s moving today. Mrs. Jake Staufenbiel nee Prediger of St. Louis died Fri. night, funeral Tues. morning. We all put in a free guess to how many strokes it would take to bust an inner tube yesterday. Berti guessed 1400. Henry came & papa went along, looking at horses. Wm. Probst, Nic Schaefer, at Ames, & etc., he had lunch here. Rose finished my dress today. The directors & Henry are to meet at the Blackburn’s school tonite- see about school.

Rosalia & Bertille went to Red Bud, took pillow case along for the pinic [sic] Tues. evening. Fr. Stern is sick in Hospital in St. Louis, got over heated last week, different priest said mass. Floyd Mertz 21 yrs. old of Red Bud, was operated on for appendix, on the 18th, sick 10 day’s & died Fri. 6:20 in the morning; funeral tomorrow morning 9:30 to Catholic Church & cemetery there. His brother is a priest at Teuteopolis Fr. Fiorman, his sister also lives there. John Braun stopped in to get saks, he is hulling our clover seed off. We went to Smithon [sic] Homecoming seen the parade, 6 o’clock, not very much; stayed awhile in evening; awful dusty & crowd there.

Papa went to Rall’s sale by Red Bud this afternoon – everything brought a good price. People here selling vanilla extract. We planted beans & pickles yesterday. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to New Athens Homecoming this afternoon. We went out to Birkner’s, then to Hy. Ronnenberg’s farewell party, half barrel beer was the refreshments; the men chipped together & Hillheims got the beer from Hecker; danced in the barn, musci [sic] by I. Helfrich Sheonborn; not a very large crowd.

Rosalia’s sewing, we washed a few pieces. A year today Aunt Lizzie died. Cloudy this morning. The 4-h Club of Hecker is going to Duquoin State Fair today. The Reheis family have a Memoriam in the Times for the death of Aunt Lizzie a year ago. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped in a little while, they went to Christ Buehler’s, moved a few articles to the Skear farm, were Bill Geodelle formerly lived, he moved last Wed. to Therefall farm. Chas. Helfrich moved to the Singer farm, next place to were they lived. Candler is moving were Helfrich lived.

No threshing this morning. Papa & Rose went to Waterloo load wheat. Sure was some awful hot days the last while; 110 & 112 in the shade, hottest & dryest [sic] year, in 32 & 36 yrs. ago. In Kansas, it must be terrible, stock all dying; 3700 cows & calf were brought to E. St. Louis Stockyards yesterday, some so weak & they shot them right away. People are dying from the heat, the paper says 510 so far, from different states, one place it rained so much that 28 acres bottom corn, all washed out. Dillinger the gangster was shot to death now, while coming out a theather [sic] Sun. night. Frank Dudenhoeffer’s of Oklahoma, nee Lizzie Mueth, are visiting relatives here, since last Friday, leaving Sun; We went out threshing, at Henry’s, had them for lunch; got 128 bus. oats our share. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were also there; came home through town. Watermelon in town.

Joe Herzog has sale this afternoon, also one in Maeystown. Kouminity [sic] Pinic [sic] in Red Bud, tickets are raffled out. like last year. Henry was here for lunch, he brought the wagon up & we had Armstutz’s, hauled the wheat out. We all went out this afternoon, some were there for lunch & supper, it rained, the machine got there about 4 o’clock, so they threshed, 2 loads wheat & 1 oats. we got 25 bus. from the 2 loads. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary come this evening & we all went to Red Bud pinic [sic], Bertille won 50 lb. flour on little tickets; several others, Mary Braun, Mrs. L. Millman, Percy Starr, Martin Fahey, Wm. Harbaugh got cheese & butter, Percy Roscow won $20 cash; they had a calf & nice prizes. The wrestling match was L. Cowell & boy from Belleville the latter won.

Papa & Rosalia went to Belleville, looked at a horse. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he went to Waterloo, she stayed here, cut my dress out. Mr. Hill was here collecting telephone dues; our chev. shed door broke & needs repairing.

We washed, ironed, patched. Mrs. Cleveland’s birthday. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening. Eggs are 12¢. Aug. Mueths 7 mo. old baby died & was buried at Mascoutha [sic] this afternoon.

We went out to Uncle Fred’s, had dinner & supper. Henry’s family came over to in the afternoon, they went up to Knob’s, horse trader. Hecker ball team won at Prairie Du Rocher.
