Nice day. Mrs. Lena Zoeller is being buried this afternoon. Mr. Bill Curran have baby boy makes 4 boys & 1 girl to family.

Thursday, Sept. 29, 1938

Bert [Bertille] cleaned dining room, varnished floor & chairs. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. Henry & family came to get seed wheat this eve. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn to nite – euchre, had to go to Floraville & back to Paderborn oiling the road again now. Bert [Bertille] had 10 out of 12 got alumnium [sic] cook pot; dance after euchre, musci [sic] by Hy. Kettler; nice crowd.

Wednesday, Sept. 28, 1938

Bert [Bertille] varnished front room floor. Went out to Henrys we washed quilts, had beer yet & cake; had chicken dinner. Mrs. Lena Zoller died this morn. is at Koch’s Parlor at Red Bud till Fri. afternoon funeral here at Hecker church & cemetery. 56 yrs.

Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1938

Bert [Bertille] cleaned front room took of [off] screens. Mr. Watson timber man living on Emil’s place, here on business. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville this afternoon. We went out to Leona’s birthday 28 yrs. old; those present were Mr. Gus Geodelle & family & Dan Geodelle & family, Kate Friedrich, Mr Cleveland & Mrs. Walter & Hilda Reheis & Armie. Adolph Klube & family, New Athens, house full; people all night, had 1/8 beer, cake, drinks, musci [sic] etc.

Monday, Sept. 26, 1938

Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed, pretty warm again today. Pap took Whip to Probsts to get it repaired. Sausage was all sold out last nite. This afternoon the guys that destroyed the Vera’s property last Sun. nite; are called to Belleville to Justice of Peace office, 11 boys had to pay $100 for property damage. Emil came over awhile this eve. Klotz & Rheineckers went to Cleavelands eating watermelons.

Sunday, Sept. 25, 1938

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. Leo & family & Bill came, we all went to Firemen’s pinic [sic] at Manniers Park, nice crowd in eve; we all had supper there plate supper, mashed potatoes & sauerkraut, sausage, cake, applesauce, catsup & pickle. 35 [cents] plate. German band played in afternoon. Stern Brau beer. Girls played for dance in eve; nice crowd. Willie Doyle was here.

Friday, Sept. 23, 1938

Bert finished cleaning upstairs. Baked cake etc. Pap took lime dust spreader home out to Henrys with team & wagon, was going to help him spread but he wasn’t ready to start yet. Transfers in Waterloo paper Homringhausen Bro. to Chr. [unclear] Buehler. Going to be a free wedding dance at Log Cabin & one at MidWay Inn tomorrow nite; don’t know who is getting married. Went to Leo’s this eve. cut lawn etc. Leo took his dad home.

Thursday, Sept. 22, 1938

Bert [Bertille] cleaned room upstairs; varnished. Pap helped Wittenauer boy’s spread lime dust this afternoon, with our spreader. They broke ax;e on theirs, this morn. went out to Henry’s got ours. Nice day, pretty warm again. Josie Keller is out at U. [Uncle] Freds. They came up this eve. we played 3 games 5 hand pinochle, she took 10 3/4 lb. springs, 1 1/2 eggs 4 lbs. lard 10 [cents] along & flowers etc.

Wednesday, Sept. 21, 1938

Went to Red Bud to funeral of Mrs. Galagher 79 yrs. old. Fr. Havey read the mass & sermon, also by him & Fr. Spors, none of Crowes out from city; large funeral. Went to sale at Red Bud, neighbor to Buehler’s; in there shed.

Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1938

Had no frost. We took 2 hogs & went to Leo’s, loaded his calf went to Belleville to Streck’s pap stayed there with baby [Marita]; he got 11 [cents] for calf 157 lb. & we got for 175 lb. $8.60 & 230 lb. $8.75 that’s yesterdays price, today markets when down again. The Young Ladies have card party in school hall tonite; open air if it isn’t to cold. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here awhile they & Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to euchre in hall, got nothing A. [Aunt] Mary got last price package napkins. 8 points. Leo & family & pap went to Red Bud to wake at Koch’s of Mrs. Isabel Gallagher. Emil came brought a letter with Nic. Brands name on it, it came from Mrs. Ryan of Oxley Mo.; wanting information about Turstenberg family, which she is a relative; to write. The sheriff of Waterloo & Belleville was out in Hecker gathering a few boys that damaged Vera’s property Sun. nite; Clyde Mueth, Clarence Braun, Bill Braun, few others yet, did about $150.00.
