Monday, Oct. 31, 1938

Halloween. Bert [Bertille] washed ironed. Pap went to Red Bud got Chev. fixed, prestove put in, cover on radiator. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, she went to church. Emil came over, to pay U. [Uncle] Freds rent [? – unclear]. Pap went to Staufenbiel woods. There were a few out walking in town tonite, children no damage.

Sunday, Oct. 30, 1938

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. We went driving around this afternoon. Went to Walter Matzenbachers & Ruth Hoffmann’s wedding dance at Brezzy [Breezy] Hill tonite. Emil Geodelle & girlfriend Mabel Crook were attendants, bride wore white lace dress & maid pink, & such a large crowd. Schumacher’s Och. [Orchestra] 3 pc. [piece].

Saturday, Oct. 29, 1938

Pap got crushing done. O. Birkner delivered 2 sacks feed for hogs & chickens all pellets. Wm. Ganley was here. We went to Hanford’s sale by Martin School House bought nothing. Leo & Rose were there to; May salarger [? – unclear].

Friday, Oct. 28, 1938

Pap went up in woods stopped at Henry’s. He brought load corn, this afternoon, & told us about the fire at Jerome Cortner’s house burned to ground not much saved we didn’t no [sic] nothing about it, happened 12:30. Lorena was at Belleville, at hospital where her mother is a patient, when Jerome got to the house flames were coming out the window they say. Hecker fire department was out.

Thursday, Oct. 27, 1938

Beautiful day. Leo & family came this eve. got the old stove, to put up in bedroom. We spaded the garden over today; planted rose bushes out etc.

Wednesday, Oct. 26, 1938

Cleaned garden. Went to Leo’s this afternoon helped put up stove, then went to Smithton. There is a Democratic meeting at Kammlers Hall tonite; Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up for the Halloween party in School Hall given by Young People of parish, he had to bring his accordion along & also Irene Buehler had to bring hers. There is also a euchre at Paderborn, all in one nite. Ray Braun is in St. Louis Hospital, had a rock in the pupil of his eye, is very dangerous operation, but they got it out but he can sees alright, only pupil isn’t round.

Tuesday, Oct. 25, 1938

Cooked kettle soap, made 3 qts. Picalia [sic], had beef soup dinner. Bert [Bertille] put flowers on windows. Henry brought load corn this afternoon, took scales & block & tackle along.

Monday, Oct. 24, 1938

Bert [Bertille] washed, ironed; made pepper relish. Pierre Laut brought clover seed here. Froze pretty good last nite, ice. Wm. Ganley & Ed. Pabsts had shooting matches yesterday. There is a Republican speaking at Lords Corner to nite; with refreshments.

Sunday, Oct. 23, 1938

Went to mass. Mission, had only 1 collection today, for missions. Went out to Uncle Fred’s had dinner & supper there. Leo & family were there all day to. Awful cold tonite, going freeze.

Saturday, Oct. 22, 1938

Pap got crushing done. We went to Belleville this afternoon to church. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] were also in. Much colder tonite, radio says frost. Had chicken pie for dinner today. Radio is fine tonite very good. Ralph Etting & Marlene Boll came this eve. Etting on business.
