Marita stayed all nite & day. A man here selling coffee percolators. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, made chicken pie for dinner. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down this eve got Marita.
Wednesday, Aug. 30, 1939
Washed, ironed; cooked catsup, juged [sic] 3 gals wine, cleaned garden. Pap dug potatoes brought up load of watermelons. sold one to Edler was here to see Uncle Fred. They were also up, he worked in garden, called Emil over yet & we all ate watermelon, pap had busted at out a 50 lb. melon boy! it certainly did taste good. Clarence Voges & Burdgorf were married today, saw wedding car pass. Leo & family came got Whip. to haul calf to Belleville tomorrow. Bill [Klein] came; we ate a large watermelon. Good.
Tuesday, Aug. 29, 1939
Went to Belleville with things all sold out, 8 doz. eggs. 18 [cents] – 10 watermelons – 25 – 10 [cents] ; potatoes, grapes, tomatoes. Bert [Bertille] got new dress & shoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Mamie & Lucinda were down to give us an invitation for her wedding dance at Daabs Club House, on Sept. 6.
Monday, Aug. 28, 1939
Went out to Henry’s took some peaches & tomato out there. Pap cutting grass. Mauff was here. Went to Leo’s took sugar & bottles along made grape juice & took bu. along to sell at Belleville; they aren’t feeling good today. Lucinda Eichenseer was here invited Bert [Bertille] to there place Sat. nite for shower for Mamie; for about 25 guests.
Sunday, Aug. 27, 1939
Went to mass. Leo & family came had dinner here. Columbia has HomeComing today; German Band playing this afternoon & parade at 1 o clock. Bill [Klein] got Bert [Bertille], he has to stay at Favres this afternoon, or till he come home.
Saturday, Aug. 26, 1939
Nice day. Ironed, patched, cleaned, baked grape pie. Henry came got peaches. Mamie came awhile this afternoon, visit me [Bertille] before she gets married & leaves town; which will be in Sept. to Clem Parker. Emil was over. Bill [Klein] came Bert [Bertille] went along home with him; after work. Favre & family left this afternoon for Hot Springs Ark. till next Tues.
Friday, Aug. 25, 1939
Rained heavy last nite & morn. at 5:30 had terrible storm in St. Louis, Chouteau Ave. water 7 ft. deep on streets, women was rescued on top of Automobile, police man went down streets on boats rescued people from there homes, hail, windows were broke trees down, automobile vanished, heavy storm for over 30 min. reported on radio; Ohio, Vandenter [sic – Vandeventer], Grand & Lindell Bolv. Canned 6 qts peaches; beans, washed this afternoon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Anita Kammler was here with punch board for winning name to win, house coat or shirt & tie. Bert [Bertille] paid 19 [cents].
Thursday, Aug. 24, 1939
Leo & family came. Marita stayed here & Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville, sold potatoes & grapes, apples & eggs. Watermelon. They had dinner here. We went up there this afternoon, pap helped make hay, picked grapes etc. got 1 1/2 lb. for there grapes.
Wednesday, Aug. 23, 1939
Nice day. Uncle Fred’s Wedd. Ann.; also the weddingt today of Orville Schmidt & Loretta Braun church at 9 o clock here; wedding dance at Log Cabin; Uncle & Aunt Mary stopped in, then went down. Written cards invitation. Bill [Klein] brought 3 heifers down this morn, pap bought from Mrs. Klein $40.00. Walsh Student for priesthood was here taking order for Ex. Magzaine [sic], will be his last yr. ordered it for 2 yrs. now. for $5.00; he had dinner here with us chicken soup. They were 2 ladies here from Belleville Antique buyers. sold fruit bowl for $1. & milk pitcher corn. for 25 [cents]. Cooked catsup made carrot relish, pumpkin pie, applesauce cookies. etc. Henry was up got bu. fallen peaches for preserves & catsup tomatos [sic]. Schmidts received so many presents; cakes were served by Katzler bakery of St. Louis. Schmidt Och. played for dance. attendants were Mary Braun a sister & Dorthy Peiffer friend & Schmidt brother & Clarence Dashner of Red Bud a friend, a new home is being erected in Red Bud near Gregson’s Filling Station.
Tuesday, Aug. 22, 1939
Went to Belleville, sold tomatoes, watermelon, eggs, potatoes, had Leo’s grapes along sold some. This afternoon, canned damson plums, grapes, cooked jelly. Went to Leo’s, put in order for 250 lbs. grapes for 2 people. Rained heavy again this eve; we got caught in it; up at Leo’s; rather on way going home. Sold Favres a 30 [cent] melon in Smithton. Rained nearly all nite. Eggs 18 [cents] Belleville.
