Henry brought a load of corn up, he was here for dinner. We started the furnace fire today. We all went to Belleville shopping, & confession, this afternoon. It rained a little today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up stopped, here, awhile & then went to Buddy Etling’s dance, at the brick house tonight, he called over the lines. They sure played a dirty Halloween trick at Blackburn School, they dumped the shanty over, for the last 3 years, it was done.

We all went out to Henry’s today, for dinner, & lunch, he butchered a pig, he returned 17 lbs. to us what he got last summer. The rest of it he is going to take to Waterloo & sell it out this evening. They have a Halloween party in Hecker tonight, the Y.P.L. in Kammler’s hall giving a dance & also one in the new school hall. The Public School had there’s this afternoon. It was a masquerade ball in the new school just for the young ones.

Today is Halloween. “Look out for tricks.” Papa went up to Neff and Staufenbiel to get crushing down this morning. Papa, Rosalia, and Bertille went to confession this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here a little while before she went up to church. Ralph Wiegand was here this evening and invited us to come to the Halloween party in Kammler’s Hall. But we couldn’t go. The boys wore overalls and the girls gingham dresses. Somebody did a dirty Halloween trick at the Blackburn School.

Henry & family were here all day today. Henry finished plowing this evening. Emil was here this afternoon. We baked molasses cookies today. There was a man here this evening, he wanted to buy eggs, but we told him we didn’t have any. Eggs are .29¢ at the store. Rosalia & Bertille went up to Mamie’s & Angela & then we all went down to the public School House for a Literary Meeting. Speakers were: H. M. Hill, Wm. Wiegand, Greg. McCarthy. Mr. Wiegand spoke on prohibition and ruination of the country. Mr. Hill spoke of Art and Mr. McCarthy spoke of Nature. Mr. Hill also sang a song & played the violin with it, a war time song. Today is Annie Reheis Birthday.

Henry came up again this morning to plow. He was here for dinner. Mr. Hill was over this afternoon he told Papa about some brush over at the school yard, if Papa wanted to, he could have it to fill up ditches down in the field, so Papa got four loads. Rosalia & Bertille went up to church this evening.

Henry started plowing up here today. Leona came up too and the kids, they were all here for dinner. We washed this morning. Rosalia & Bertille went to the Euchre in Kammler’s Hall this evening, but didn’t win anything. Rosalia had 6 points & Bertille 7, but the 8’s didn’t all get prizes, there wasn’t enough. Aunt Mary got a sauce pan she had 10 points.

Leona came up this morning after the kids. It rained a little this morning. This afternoon Mrs. Lutz is getting buried. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here this afternoon & then Rosalia & Bertille went along with them to Mrs. Lutz funeral. The people couldn’t all get in church it was so large a funeral we got as far as the steeple. We rode along out to the cemetery with Uncle Fred & rode back with Joe Gregson’s. There was a man around this morning selling coffee, and with so many checks you could win something either a clock or dishes, waterless cooker, so we ordered 2 lbs. coffee and dishes. Eggs today are .28¢. Rosalia was up town this morning and got some feed. Mrs. Rausch is awful sick at present.

Today is shooting matches all over again, Ambrose Doyle, Philip Meuth, George Rickert. Henry & family were all here for dinner today. Little after dinner they went home. In the evening Henry & Leona brought Bobby & Floyd here to stay with us all night, while they went to New Athens to play music.

Today is Jake Reheis’s wife’s birthday. They are going to celebrate by having a dance in Breezy’s Hill. Today Gambach is to start his sale. This evening Rosalia and Bertille went up & took Mamie along & then we went to the Republican meeting in the church hall, or in the new school hall. Archie Weihl & A.C. Bollinger, A.H. Friedichs & Meader from Columbia were the main speakers & Luis Weihl was chairman. Free sandwiches and soda water were had & gumo (?) for the ladies from Casey Leep, blotters from Louis H. Zimmer.

Bertille was at church this morning. The Catholic School children didn’t have no school all this week, because the furnace isn’t fixed yet. They took Mrs. Lutz to the hospital this morning, she is in a pretty bad condition, she is swollen up so bad she can’t hardly breathe they say. Mr. Zimmer the candidate for School Superintendent was here this morning. The Monroe Co. farmers Institue is going to be held at Columbia this year. This evening the bell of the Evangelical church tolled 58 strokes for the death of Mrs. Lutz, she died at 3:30 this afternoon. They was to operate on her, but she was too weak, when they brought her to the hospital.
