Went to Waterloo mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile; Chris Buehler’s & Henry’s family went to see them this afternoon. Rose & Berti went to Mamie’s, seen Vic’s & Elmer Kammler’s houses. Beautiful day & the cars on the road, awful. Geo. Homringhausen was taken to Red Bud hospital last Thurs. nite has double pneumia [sic], at present is packed in ice, has awful high fever.

Beautiful Decoration Day. Pap went to see Uncle Adam this afternoon. School pinic [sic] in Waterloo this morn; all day dance in new pavillion [sic]. The Paderborn Hatchery is having a dance at Carrie Totchs Hall there tonite free; we went to the school pinic [sic] dance at Pautlers pavillion [sic], nice crowd, good time.

We cleaned truck patch, chix house etc. Tonite is graduating at Waterloo in parish house, Blanche Crowe, being one, we received an invitation from her. Went out to Henry’s tonite.

Thursday, May 28, 1936

Cut lawn, washed car. Mentel of near Waterloo looked at our hay rake, will take it for $3.00; will get it later, they had been at Millsdat [sic] got strawberries 12 qts. $1.10. Went to Belleville to Dr. this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary also went along in. Walter Parrot of Red Bud has a wedding anniv. at Donahue’s tonite free, musci [sic] by Blossom City. We went; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary to; nice crowd & good time. Skaer of Smithon [sic] 50 yrs. old jumped in well & drowned.

Wednesday, May 27, 1936

We had the 1st spring leghorn for dinner, small yet, but was pretty good; nice meal. Jac. Erle & guy were here talking house Ins; wrote the paper out, we are going to join in there Ins. Co. instead of Rapp’s at Columbia, that’s house & property Insurance. It is so hot again today, still no rain. Radio said at 5:30 this morn. it 70°. Pap got his hair cut, & also paid Dr. Eckert, $7.50 – $6. for going to Belleville, $1.50 for coming here that morning; he wouldn’t had to went to Belleville at all never, even came to see him while he was at the hospital, but he’s paid. We went out to Uncle Fred’s had supper, brought Oscar’s kids along from school; they were walking by the cemetery, took them up. Went over to Geo. Wagner’s this eve. awhile. Joe Wacthels went to a new barn dance, on Freeburg oil road, about 2 miles from Douglas tonite.

Tuesday, May 26, 1936

Beautiful day, warm. We baked bread & cherry coffee cake, we picked about ½ gal. cherries; some are green yet, birds help themselves also; so we might get a few more yet. Eggs are 16¢ now. We sent a book ticket to Dupo, that we received from there, for the benefit of Sacred Heart Church there; on a Ford V.8 .25¢ or 5 chances for $1. Henry was up at Meng’s; with the mares.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon, him & Rosalia took 18 bus. wheat to Waterloo got 87¢. Mrs. Renneker has a coffee demonstration at her place this afternoon, Mrs. A. Braun & Erna, Alma & Katie Klotz, Lena Meng, Clara Wagner, Mrs. Hugo Probst; lady doing the work, also Olive Laut is there. Clara Wagner came here & invited us to come to her place on today a week, June 2, she is going to have it, she won a dish, now by giving it at her place also, she gets a pyrex set. We planted the rest of sweet potatoe [sic] plants out, got the row & filled, 360 plants. Send for tennis shoes for Aunt Mary. Mr. Will Rhul & daughter was here, he looked at the rake, but said he couldn’t use it, also talked about the signing of Clover contracts this year.

We washed, ironed. The garden is just about dried up, sure terrible we didn’t have a good rain for so long. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he cut his lawn; sure is hot.

Sunday, May 24, 1936

Henry’s birthday 32 yrs. We went to Red Bud 6 o’clock mass. The Bishop comes there at 10:30, we didn’t go down for confirmation, there was a class of 22 children & 7 adults. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Josie Keller were here all day, dinner supper, she was out at Aunt Mary’s all nite last nite; came about 9 o clock. Omer & we went to Foster Pond to free birthday dance tonite.

Saturday, May 23, 1936

Henry & Rob. Grover making hay, had dinner here. Mrs. C. Guebert has sale & Hubers have a sale this afternoon; nice day. Mary Mathews has birthday dance at Kammlers tonite, Ed. Mueth has one at New Athens, Brun’s boys, playing One at Log Cabin, by Red Bud Webers Orch. Lipperts has barn dance. Mrs. L. Sauer has Pautlers, Rythmn [sic] Kings. Och; so many tonite. It is Gertie Cortner’s birthday today. We went Mary’s dance here nice crowd, good time. Henry broke the axle on his wagon by Geo. Parkers going home with load hay, took 2 loads home.

Friday, May 22, 1936

Henry & Rob. came raked hay, we helped put 1 load in & he took 1 home; had dinner here. Hodges of Marissa was here Wed. to collect his money to pay the other guy Anderson for colt – $8.00 they paid, he wanted $12 first; that is the guy Henry got the team mares from, his all have colts now, 9 head horses & mules on his place. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped in this evening, they were at Ed. Parkers; his boy fell & broke his arm; & Ed Cortner’s girl broke her arm also. We got a letter sent from Blanche Crowe for graduating exercises to be on 29.
