Nice day hot. Over the holidays they were 409 reported dead radio said this morn, 200 by Automobile accidents, some drowning & fire & shooting. Went to Leo’s made hay, rained a little this afternoon.

Bert’s [Bertille] at Leo’s all this while; for 3 weeks so far. Edwin Neff & Amelia Dintelman got married Decoration Day. May 30. Catholic School children have pinic [sic]; Mrs. Jake Friedrich had sale June 4.

June 1, Elmer Haudrich & Edna Watchel were married here, attendants Cyril & Leroy Haudrich, Mildred Watchel & Lorretta Biffar; wedding dance at Kammlers Hall, Neffs dance also was there. Mr. Fritsche of here died. Mr. Jake Mehrmann had a stroke on going home from Haudrichs wedding dance & died; buried June 5. Rob. Knabe big barn burned to ground Sun. eve. June 5; 2 fire department Hecker, & Smithton were out; saved the out buildings house etc.

Holiday, Decoration Day. Pap went to Henry’s, took mower home; went to Schillings to get lumber. Rob. Laut, Pierre, Buddy Napier & Geo. Boll strawing Rob’s, potato patch today; Geo. Wagner putting rubber roofing on barn today. School pinic [sic] today at Waterloo, parade at 10:30; all day pinic [sic]. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to Waterloo to pinic [sic]. We planted, pumpkins, watermelons, pickles, beans etc. truck patch.

Beautiful Decoration Day. Pap went to see Uncle Adam this afternoon. School pinic [sic] in Waterloo this morn; all day dance in new pavillion [sic]. The Paderborn Hatchery is having a dance at Carrie Totchs Hall there tonite free; we went to the school pinic [sic] dance at Pautlers pavillion [sic], nice crowd, good time.

Decoration Day also Ascension Holiday. We went to Waterloo to mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here awhile. We went to Waterloo to School pinic [sic]; took our dinner along, seen the parade, lot of children. went out to the cemetery, seen Aunt Lizzies grave, flowers on it now, there & went to see Ed. Mavers by Foster Pond; came back for pinic [sic] again, free danceing [sic] all afternoon, Moonlight Orch. This evening at 7:30 they have donkey softball at Pautler Park, that is to be good playing ball on donkeys. Adm. 10 & 25¢; dance at 9 when the ball game is over, trained donkey 13 came from Colorado on at truck. We went to see Perry May awhile, & then went to the free dance given at Oak Grove by Nite Owl Orch. of Red Bud nice crowd. Free oranges & lemonade were given away at the pinic [sic].

Memorial Day. The Hecker Y.P.L. having outing today Corveur Lake, Mo. Yesterday the children & sisters of Catholic School had there outing at Fort Chartres. Klein’s, Griffin’s, Braun’s, trucks & I. Helfrich’s car. Bert Thompson & Ed. Meng came to take a look at the barn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were at the school pinic [sic] in Waterloo, this afternoon, came up here this eve. went to the dance at Oak Grove, Leona brought the kids up to stay with papa, & we went along with them to Oak Grove, free dance, musci [sic] by Jolly Six, Schmidts – Oh! Boy! Crowd. Clara Wagner & the kids came over awhile this evening; Rosalia & Berti went to Red Bud after chick mash. A man here bought 7 doz. eggs @ 12¢. There were niggers at Henry’s today.

Deocration [sic] Day. We worked our truck patch & garden this morning. The St. Augustine Parish have pinic [sic] this afternoon & evening. There is School Pinic [sic] at Waterloo at the Kniting Mill Park. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came for the church pinic [sic], Miss Keller & Miss Kuhn stopped in awhile then went out to Aunt Mary’s for dinner. Bill Freund was here for supper, then we all went up to the pinic [sic] to, didn’t win anything, Mamie got a nice quilt. The Prairie Du Rocher band played. 

Monday, May 30, 1932

Decoration Day. Church Pinic [sic] in Alten [sic – Alton] & here in Hecker, & school pinic [sic] at Waterloo. Hy. Armstutuz was here this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here helping to make hay, they & Hy. Meng had dinner, he helped too. This afternoon Uncle Fred took Aunt Mary up to the pinic [sic], & her stuff but no chickens, then he came back & helped finish with the hay, they had lunch here, Uncle Fred ate supper with us, then went down to Red Bud to drug store. There where so many people at the pinic [sic], they didn’t have enough chicken, 30 people went down, didn’t eat no supper, had to wait to long till the chicken was all fryed [sic]. This evening we all went out Henry Birkner’s, Mary’s birthday, had a dance out there. Lip. Meuth & 3 other fellows where here & they looked at the colts, drunk as could be, they where out all nite at a dance at Fahey’s. eggs 7¢ today.

Papa got crushing done.  There is School Picnic in Waterloo today, parade of the children is at 9:30.  Everything is closed today, stores, banks, barber shops, also because it is Memorial Day.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up at 10 o’clock, then we drove down to Fr. Chartres, from there we went to Polaceki sale at Fults, the May’s where there from there we came home, we hit the hard road at Parrot’s Corner, we came through a quite a few towns, & good roads, drove along the bluffs, we covered 58 miles, was back at 4 o’clock.  Harry Kammler’s is giving a dance tonight, but it ain’t so nice, cool, it rained where we were today, but not much here at home.  The Hecker ball teams played today.  The Blue Capes against the Hecker All Stars, in favor or Blue Caps, the score was 13 to 14.
