Saturday, Dec. 30, 1939

Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came this afternoon took Marita along home this eve; Leo & pap went to Smithton, Leo took 29 bus. of our wheat to Freeburg got 90 [cents] he also went to dentist over there. Awful cold this morn. 10 above & tonite to be zero radio says.

Thursday, Dec. 28, 1939

Cloudy again all day. Leo & family came this afternoon, brought load corn down, coming back tonite again to catch chickens & ship them of; Lengylon on Milsdadt was at Mertz’s at time, so sold them to him; heavy 11 1/2 & light 9 1/2 – 1/2 [cents] lower then market price, had 290 lbs. heavy & 122 light. We had ice cream this eve.

Tuesday, Dec. 26, 1939

Uncle Fred stoped [sic] in, he went to Red Bud to bank. Nice this morn, little cloudy. Pap went to see Fr. Aydt; about renting pew here. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Belleville this eve; came back pap went along, went to Henry’s. Leo & family were also out there; sure bad weather, snowing heavy; again tonite, not very nice driving on highway.

Saturday, Dec. 23, 1939

Snowing this afternoon & heavy, sure is beautiful. Went to Smithton this afternoon to church. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] & Marita came, we killed & cleaned a goose got it from Geo. Cortners. 156 lbs. 12 lb; cleaned it this eve.

Friday, Dec. 22, 1939

Put in tree & cleaned etc. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] & Marita came, brought load corn; we cleaned out basement. Received Christmas greeting from Becker of Red Bud. picture & envelope from Fr. Spors. Cloudy, looks like rain.

Thursday, Dec. 14, 1939

Marita is still here. They are hauling hay in at home today, so just left her here; coming back tomorrow again. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, cakes, washed windows. Beautiful day was 24 this morn, early. eggs came down awful Mertz paids 19 [cents]. L. Dehn got doz. here yesterday for 19 [cents].

Tuesday, Dec. 12, 1939

Went to Belleville got 30 [cents] for eggs. Marita stayed here all nite again. Snowed a little this afternoon.

Sunday, Dec. 10, 1939

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Henry & family were here for dinner & supper. Leo & family were out at Henry’s they weren’t home, so they came here this afternoon, had supper here also. Uncle Fred & pap went to see lumber at Baums Church Wartburg. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Smithton service then to Emerich Keherer’s playing cards Booby & girlfriend were there to. Emil was called over to telephone, by Cleveland wanted him to come out for solo game. Grover was at home today.

Thursday, Dec. 7, 1939

Baked cookies. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came, they finished concrete block foundation. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, she went to church, he brought a load wood, for butchering. Emil was over awhile. Marita went along home this eve. Jos. Braun was buried this morn. formerly ex. banker of Hecker, had been sick awhile.

Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1939

Leo & Rosalia came down, brought her wash along, we washed together, & ironed patched etc. Bill [Klein] came helped put concrete posts down; Marita stayed here all nite. Jos. Braun died will be buried tomorrow morn. at Fateyville Church & Mt. Carmell cemetery at Belleville. Berrings had free coon lunch & horse peffer [hasenpfeffer?] last nite called over lines. Louis Schoenborn got tickets for wrestling match at E. St. Louis; Bill [Klein] got Bert [Bertille] & went.
