Holiday. Went to 6 o’clock mass at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile after church, they have 13 hr. Devotion today. Bill [Klein] & Bertille went to Belleville, ordered wall of paper & went to E. St. Louis & St. Louis on business, stopped a few min’s at Uncle Ed’s shop. got a tarpaulin at Child’s for Leo 14 x 20 – $9.13 with tax. Dr. Werth have a baby girl. Orlin Skaer’s have a boy at Red Bud hospital; Ethel Prediger is home again from Belleville hospital, going to call there girl Madeline.

Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1939

Leo & Rosalia came down, brought her wash along, we washed together, & ironed patched etc. Bill [Klein] came helped put concrete posts down; Marita stayed here all nite. Jos. Braun died will be buried tomorrow morn. at Fateyville Church & Mt. Carmell cemetery at Belleville. Berrings had free coon lunch & horse peffer [hasenpfeffer?] last nite called over lines. Louis Schoenborn got tickets for wrestling match at E. St. Louis; Bill [Klein] got Bert [Bertille] & went.

Saturday, May 6, 1939

Cut lawn etc. Went to Waterloo to Opac [? – unclear] Crooks sale, everything cheap; kitchen range $1.50. Mrs. Geodelle bought table for Leona $1; we got flour barrel for Rose [Rosalia]. Admiral Eichelmann Waterloo & Margaret Reneicker of near Red Bud were married Apr. 30. at E. St. Louis in St. Patricks parsonage. by Fr. Byre; at present making there home with grooms parents Rud Eichelmann. Clyde Pautler of Evansville have baby boy since Apr. 10 now have boy & girl; Robert [Brand] took central Ex. at Waterloo today. We got 15 1/2 [cents] for shipping coop chickens for 23. – 115 lbs @ 15 1/2 & for 1.4 lbs. @ 6 [cents] from McLain Bros. at St. Louis.

Sunday, Nov. 20, 1938

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Leo & family were here for dinner, had beef soup & roast. A. [Aunt] Mary went to meeting at church this afternoon, had meeting in prepartion [sic – preparation] for Thursday dinner those that don’t fix turkeys, have to make 4 chickens. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] stayed for supper & also Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to E. St. Louis to Ainade Temple to see Hill Billy show. Susie won 1st prize & Joe Lieber 2nd & little boy 3rd; & Jitterbug Dance 1st couple got $20.00 2nd $10.00 & 3rd $5; it was good.

Friday, Sept. 16, 1938

Pap took 11 bus. wheat to Waterloo, got 58 [cents]. brought 50 lbs. flour along. Bert [Bertille] baked cookies, cake & biscuits. Nice cool day. Man here wanted old underwear & things. Al Rausch is hauling coal for H.M. Hill this afternoon. Mr & Mrs. Alb. Crook of Poe Station have a baby boy born in Red Bud hospital last week. Mr & Mrs. Joe Schaefer left Wed. for honey moon to Nigera Falls & going to stop at Chicago visit relatives on way back then go housekeeping in there new home, just recently built by Mr. Schaefer near E. St. Louis, he works for New York Railroad Co; at E. St. Louis. Radio is good these nites, & on day time all you hear is war, don’t know yet whats going to be.

Thursday, Aug. 11, 1938

Nice cool all day. Pap hauled 2 loads rock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he cut lawn etc. Major Bowes on radio tonite honored city. E. St. Louis. Hy [Henry] brought sack feed down, took 3 chances on Red Bud pinic [sic] prizes. Clara Gregson took 1 this morn. Emil went along with Gus. Blackburns today to Centralia’s yesterday with Clevelands to get peaches. Smithton boys were going around here selling peaches from Centralia for $1. bu. not nice at all.

Tuesday, Aug. 9, 1938

Washed, cooked catsup & preserves. Fr. Spors stopped in on his way to Onley [sic – Olney] to a pinic [sic] left our chance books, he had Seiferts along Mr. brother a priest is stationed at Olney Ill. The hottest day this yr. had little rain. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he helped fix stands for pinic [sic]. Waterloo band plays on WTMV. at 8:05 tonite. Roy Pautler 27 died Mon. morn at St. Mary’s hospital in E. St. Louis, from head infection & sore leg that he had.

Sunday, March 13, 1938

Raining last nite, & tonite. Went to mass, got prayer books, everybody prays aloud in church now. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came down for dinner. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon yet; also Emil came awhile. Bert [Bertille] went to see Hill Billy Contest at the Ainada Temple in E. St. Louis tonite; it surely was swell; Susie got prize for best girl singer & yodeler agains Tennessee Nell who was very good. Smoky from Pappy’s gang the fiddler, & so many other, over 50 radio stars, & large crowd, seats weren’t all taken though.

Tuesday, March 1, 1938

Went out to U. [Uncle] Freds sawing wood again, had them yet for dinner, Joe Krebs sawed it. Bert [Bertille] washed the car & shine it this afternoon, cleaned chicken house & barn with the team today. Henry & Leona & Billy [Willis] were at Belleville, stopped in on way back she got winter coat. gray. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came went to euchre in school hall & large crowd. Leona Wittenauer got attendance prize $1. We didn’t get nothing. Bert [Bertille] had 7 points; Emil was at E. St. Louis stock yards today; was at euchre this eve.

Saturday, Aug. 7, 1937

Pap went to barber shop. Stoeckel painter is out all day. Pap went to Burksville sale; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to Fr. Feldmann & brothers sale at Red Bud. bought box jars etc. for Rose [Rosalia] for 20¢; wasn’t much of a sale. Nic Frisch has sale to, that is over near New Athens. R. Besher & Fern Gully; family are moving on that place. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came Bert wasn’t along to Log cabin, supposed to be a wedding dance, couple from E. St. Louis, but they never came at all, Webers Bro. playing & no crowd, we came home ten o’clock.
