Nice cool day. Made pepper relish, perserves [sic], cooked catsup, canned peaches. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for pinic [sic], nice isn’t so hot. Bert [Bertille] got Sears order shoes, all O.K.; also got letter from Cowell’s Clo. Store at Red Bud to get $2.50 in trade prize I [Bertille] won at Red Bud Church pinic [sic] on Aug. 2. Surprize [sic]. Pap picked 3 bus. peaches this morn. they are for sale. Leo & family came for pinic [sic]. Bill [Klein] came all went to pinic [sic], sure had crowd for supper. Smithton band furnished musci [sic], prizes were won bycicle [sic] girl from St. Louis; set dishes, Frank Oxener. quilt – Minnie Staufenbiel; ice cream freezer Ray Braun; blanket Jake Klein. Fr. Aydt won something also Jung from Waterloo. A. [Aunt] Mary won quilt playing bluey. Flossie Kammler won 2 quilts

Thursday, July 20, 1939

Nice cloudy cool. Went to Waterloo, sold some chances for Red Bud Church Pinic [sic]. Dr. N. B. Pautler 67 died will be buried tomorrow morn; mass & cemetery at Waterloo, was sick for 3 yrs; Bert [Bertille] went down to Wagner’s Funeral Parlor to see him, so many flowers. looks good, 2 sons were there just then. Steve & Ray. Feruer brought sack pullets for chixs down. Bill [Klein] stopped in want to go to St. Louis Sun. to Forest Park.

Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1938

Rained heavy last nite cloudy didn’t wash. Canned 7 qts. peaches. Red Bud Catholic church pinic [sic] today, plate lunch served from 11 till 1:30 for 35 [cents] plate, supper 50. card game in afternoon. Pap went down this afternoon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary went down for supper; we all ate supper there; wasn’t much till later in evening. None of us received the 41 prizes that were raffled, had no been on ground. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] & baby [Marita] came, pap brought them along done [sic – down], to picnic.

Friday, Aug. 12, 1938

Pap hauled 2 loads gravel with team. Gus Frisch stopped in, he put some coal hat in drive way; took chance Red Bud prize. Leo & family came brought truck back. Emil was over awhile.

Thursday, Aug. 11, 1938

Nice cool all day. Pap hauled 2 loads rock. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he cut lawn etc. Major Bowes on radio tonite honored city. E. St. Louis. Hy [Henry] brought sack feed down, took 3 chances on Red Bud pinic [sic] prizes. Clara Gregson took 1 this morn. Emil went along with Gus. Blackburns today to Centralia’s yesterday with Clevelands to get peaches. Smithton boys were going around here selling peaches from Centralia for $1. bu. not nice at all.

Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1937

Washed, ironed, patched, canned 5 qts peaches. Its awful hot this afternoon. Hy Birkner’s – Glenn had a song sung for him today, birthday is Sat; was requested by a friend from Belleville, on Gypsy Joes program. At Oscar’s moving yesterday they had 2 kegs beer & case root beer. At the Tipton pinic [sic], $100 – went to a fellow from Joulit [Joliet?] $35 to Dorthy Burkhardt, at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came we went along to Red Bud church pinic [sic], had supper there – 50¢; lots chicken, was pretty good supper, nice crowd. The quilt that was raffled was won by Norbert Seifert, pillow slips to Perryville Mo; center piece to Kaffoi. Stella Roscow won a beautiful quilt playing bluey, & Ben Mudd, from St. Louis, won 2 at bluey stand, sure some luck, they also played for cash, & pillow slips; we didn’t win a thing.
