Rained heavy last nite & morn. at 5:30 had terrible storm in St. Louis, Chouteau Ave. water 7 ft. deep on streets, women was rescued on top of Automobile, police man went down streets on boats rescued people from there homes, hail, windows were broke trees down, automobile vanished, heavy storm for over 30 min. reported on radio; Ohio, Vandenter [sic – Vandeventer], Grand & Lindell Bolv. Canned 6 qts peaches; beans, washed this afternoon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Anita Kammler was here with punch board for winning name to win, house coat or shirt & tie. Bert [Bertille] paid 19 [cents].

Monday, Aug. 21, 1939

Canned peaches etc. Bill [Klein] stopped in. Pap went to Waterloo this afternoon get corn check. $15.11 – with Henry’s & Feruer. Henry & family & Leo & family were here this eve; eating watermelons.

Friday, Aug. 18, 1939

Raining this eve. canning again today. Walter Jaeger of Waterloo sold his home, & going to build a house on his mothers lot, on Morrison Ave. The barn & building that burned on Freund place was about $5000 damages, Joe & his wife not being home at the time, happened 10 ‘oclock. Smithton priest Fr. Jansen will be changed next week to Lively Grove & Fr. Kunkil of there will be at Smithton. There will be women on jury this yr. Luella Wiegand Hilda Mertz.

Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1939

Went to Belleville, sold $6. peaches, tomatoes, potatoes, watermelons, eggs; got 18 [cents] – 2 for 35 [cents]. Wittenauers putting up hay. Peaches & tomatoes are still spoiling canned some more today again. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary pap went to Ruma to church pinic [sic]. Geo. Schilling was taken to St. Louis hospital today, has brain tumor. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & pap went to Ruma to church pinic [ed. note – she wrote this twice]. brought some chicken along home & we had chicken & watermelon. Bill [Klein] came stayed here with Bert [Bertille]; they didn’t win nothing.

Monday, Aug. 14, 1939

Washed, ironed; canned peaches, tomatoes. Wittenauers plowing & cutting hay today. Mauff was here. Jac Orlet stopped took 1 bu. peaches along. pap picked 4 bus. today. Hy Bruns came brought basket back. We went to Kleins this eve; pap looked at horse & heifers they have for sale.

Saturday, Aug. 12, 1939

Raining showers on & off today, some pretty heavy ones; 3 houses were on fire in Waterloo this morn. electric wire, ran from one house to the other. Canning peaches so many fell of [sic] from wind. Pap went along with Emil out to Joe Schillings sale; things that Hess had bought on the other sale; Kettler has moved in there alreadys Hess lives on Uncle Adam’s place now; things went cheap at the sale. Ray Schmierbach & Luella Koerber are getting married in St. Louis today; dance tonite at Turners Hall in Smithton. Everybody welcome. Wagners left this afternoon, for supper. Hillsheim painted Wagners car blue & black; looks pretty good. Plenty rain for Wedding; Koerber boy & Verita Muhrmann & 2 from his side attendants; they had Favres V.8 Demonstrator, & Elmer Schmierbach turned it over, on slab near Smithton, car was damaged, but no one hurt.

Friday, Aug. 11, 1939

Rained a little shower this morn.; canned tomatoes & beans; took peaches out to Henry’s, but nobody home. Went to Leo’s making hay this afternoon; took basket peaches along, rained heavy this eve. Jobusch postmaster of Waterloo was buried yesterday afternoon at Waterloo. Wind took of a lot of peaches this eve. lights were of [sic] for while. Louis Mueth of Paderborn died. Uncle Joe Mueth & Eddy & some of Nics family & Phil are going to Okalohoma [sic] to visit soon; to Frank Dudenhoeffer.

Thursday, Aug. 10, 1939

Nice day. Went to Belleville, sold 4 bus. peaches potatoes apples tomatoes, pickles, eggs, summer sausage, sold everything. Leroy Haudrich have baby girl born this morning. Picked peaches sold bu. to Hy. Bruns; bu. to Joe Watchels, 1/2 bu. to Renneckers, pk. to Lauts; gave Hy. bu. some for canning & preserves.

Wednesday, Aug. 9, 1939

Nice cool day. Made pepper relish, perserves [sic], cooked catsup, canned peaches. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came for pinic [sic], nice isn’t so hot. Bert [Bertille] got Sears order shoes, all O.K.; also got letter from Cowell’s Clo. Store at Red Bud to get $2.50 in trade prize I [Bertille] won at Red Bud Church pinic [sic] on Aug. 2. Surprize [sic]. Pap picked 3 bus. peaches this morn. they are for sale. Leo & family came for pinic [sic]. Bill [Klein] came all went to pinic [sic], sure had crowd for supper. Smithton band furnished musci [sic], prizes were won bycicle [sic] girl from St. Louis; set dishes, Frank Oxener. quilt – Minnie Staufenbiel; ice cream freezer Ray Braun; blanket Jake Klein. Fr. Aydt won something also Jung from Waterloo. A. [Aunt] Mary won quilt playing bluey. Flossie Kammler won 2 quilts

Tuesday, Aug. 8, 1939

Washed, ironed; canning peaches, tomatoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, he helped put up stands for pinic [sic]. German band played for John Myerscough, Daougertys. Elvira Haudrich have a baby born two weeks ago, twins were just yr old Sat.; now have 5 children. Rained this eve. little shower. Emil takes care of Ben Heyls stock & Peffers are living in house till Ben Heyls get back, are visiting Ed Brand in Alabama. Nearly all threshing machines finished today & pulled in sheds, Bruns is still out yet. Frischkorn & Schillings Klotz’s finished.
