Rained last nite, pretty good. Bert baked cookies, cake & pie. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came brought tomatoe plants along set out 38 in truck patch; planted pumpkins. John Reheis accessor was here. Fred Weber has a barn dance tonite, called over lines. Emil was here.

Thursday, April 28, 1938

Nice cool day, little rain this morn; we went to Leo’s, planted beets, had lunch & went to Belleville from there; Bert [Bertille] got new oxfords white, etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon; brought cabbage plants, we have now; 112 in truck patch. Received a card to pay $7.00 for tornado Ins. Eggs are 16 [cents] today. Edward Kuess & Verniece Rausch 17 marriage license, were in paper today.

Friday, April 22, 1938

Harry Wittenauer came to see pap. Henry came they went to meeting at Kammler’s, guys there figureing [sic] out your farms, to what crops you can put out. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, got horse & him & pap, plowed, his patch for him. We set out 26 cabbage plants in truck patch. Seen in paper transfer of John Kammler’s in town here to Marie Wagner. Dorothy Geogelion of New Athens was buried the other day, she used to work at Vera’s Tavern, was Alf. Eckerts, girl friend; was roller skating & hurt. Emil & girls are having tombstone [of Uncle Adam’s], at cemetery fixed, same stone for both, old one turned & writing put on for U. [Uncle] Adam also.

Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1937

Beautiful day. Pap sewed timothy seed in truck patch. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon, also Emil was up. They came this eve. again & Bert [Bertille] went along to Paderborn to euchre, & dance. Bert got water pitcher had 8-12 games. Uncle & A. [Aunt] got nothing had 4 points each. Rheinhardts Hossier Hot Shots furnished musci [sic] for dance.

Thursday, Sept. 30, 1937

Bert [Bertille] cleaned 2 rooms upstairs. Pap cooked beef soup dinner; Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, had dinner here, finished papering & cleaned his truck patch, pap helped him this afternoon worked it up with horse; had lunch with them, stayed for eve. awhile. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came brought cream down, going to ship it over with Buehler, then going to start hauling milk again, only not getting best price. Schmidt brought sack wagone [sic] laying mash started feeding it today. Leo & Rose also down last nite.

Worked truck patch, garden, washed, ironed. Pap went out to help Henry cut wheat; came back at dinner, pretty warm. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon.

Pap went out early to Henry’s. Stoeckel came out & they plastered the room & fixed things up. Uncle Fred & A. Mary were up, we cut lawn, worked garden. Bert painted bath room, worked truck patch, planted sweet potatoe [sic] plants this eve.

Holiday, Decoration Day. Pap went to Henry’s, took mower home; went to Schillings to get lumber. Rob. Laut, Pierre, Buddy Napier & Geo. Boll strawing Rob’s, potato patch today; Geo. Wagner putting rubber roofing on barn today. School pinic [sic] today at Waterloo, parade at 10:30; all day pinic [sic]. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to Waterloo to pinic [sic]. We planted, pumpkins, watermelons, pickles, beans etc. truck patch.

Saturday, May 29, 1937

Poppy Day, pap cutting grass this morn; worked truck patch; got haircut. We had a few light showers this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up. Pap took mule to Fritsche got the hoofs trimmed 40¢. We went out to Henry’s this eve went along with them looking for pigs, by Burksville, but didn’t find none. There is a man at Donahue’s playing piano, starting tonite & playing till Mon. for 51 hrs. straight he plays, says in paper.

Tuesday, March 30, 1937

Pap went to Belleville with 2 hogs same as last time 420 lbs. @ 10¼¢, also went to dentist. Bert washed, ironed. Krupp boys came with truck brought the mule $25.00 & took & mare along, made a trade. The foundry men aren’t working today. Rob. Laut came, looked at implements, he is going to start farming a little truck patch, on our lot on the corner up here. Christ Buehler & Frieda stopped on way to Red Bud, looked at wheat ground. Louis Birkner is pretty good again now, nobody staying there.
