Bert’s [Bertille] at Leo’s all this while; for 3 weeks so far. Edwin Neff & Amelia Dintelman got married Decoration Day. May 30. Catholic School children have pinic [sic]; Mrs. Jake Friedrich had sale June 4.

June 1, Elmer Haudrich & Edna Watchel were married here, attendants Cyril & Leroy Haudrich, Mildred Watchel & Lorretta Biffar; wedding dance at Kammlers Hall, Neffs dance also was there. Mr. Fritsche of here died. Mr. Jake Mehrmann had a stroke on going home from Haudrichs wedding dance & died; buried June 5. Rob. Knabe big barn burned to ground Sun. eve. June 5; 2 fire department Hecker, & Smithton were out; saved the out buildings house etc.

Friday, Sept. 25, 1936

Pap went out to see some people on business. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, he lawned. We went out to Waterloo this eve. to see Seila Sterling Circus, was the same as last year, out by Breezy Hill, & a crowd; horses danced, girl turned somersault 2 times. Mr. Ettling came paid Int. etc. this evening. Jonny Mueth is crippled a little fell from a wagon. Wm. Keorber’s by Paderborn, his barn burned down last nite about 12 o clock, wheat from last yr. & all of it this year, they thought it must of started from light plant or some how, they came home at 11 o clock & in 1 hr, the barn was all ablaze. Ambrose Doyle’s child is in hospital got operated for appendix, 4th one now.

Cooler but no rain. Henry & Floyd was here yesterday disking the Stuble field; had lunches & dinner & finished up. Mrs. Freund & Creses & girl friends from St. Louis came, paid the $75 balance on mare & colt, had lunch; that was also yesterday. Harry Baskplah was also here, collected his $9.00 cold service from Henry. We went to Waterloo to Columbia, this morning. Cliffords baby is getting buried this afternoon 2:30 to cemetery. Rev. Hosto came to the house. Thunder & storm here this evening from 4:30 till 7 o’clock, the lightening struck Louis Voges barn on Cowell place, burned it down, grain & hay, ect [sic], big loss. Had lot hail at Waterloo, not many here, but a good rain. Mrs. Hy. Meng is pretty sick at present.

We trimed [sic] up the yard. Papa went over to Meng’s, but they didn’t do anything this morning, the insurance man Lucht, was up, this afternoon they buried the horses; hauled them out with Werner’s truck. Billy Kammler was here selling chances on a fancy quilt to be raffled at there picnic on June 2; we took one, 10¢. Mr. Alois Havey was here & repaired the roof on our house, put on shingles, & nailed them on, worked 1 hr. for 50¢. So awful hot today, to nite, rain storm again, just terrible so much rain these last few day’s, everything is so wet, especially the garden. Eggs 21¢.

Sunday, May 12, 1935

Went to Red Bud, the preist [sic] gave the young boys & girls a real lecture sermon, because the boy’s aren’t behaving, AC Buchon L. Ratz & Hartmann were all put in jail this week. It rained, thunder lightened [sic], awful this afternoon, about 3 o’clock. Lena Meng went screaming up the street, said lightening had struck there barn, & on fire she couldn’t get central to answer, had to walk up town, but the fire department couldn’t save it anymore only the house & other building. they protected; looked terrible, burned completely to the ground, good wagon, corn, hay, 3 horses & colt, Werner Kammler’s mare & colt, Bert Tomphsons jack, & horse, one they saved; people that came, in & out; came from all over. Clifford came this evening, he is working by Waterloo now $25 mo. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, & we all went to the fish fry & dance, given by Fire Co. at Manier’s; very large crowd, & the park was muddy, they hauled 2 loads saw dust, around the bar, lot a people got stuck; one guy was front wheels, all way down; park is all a mess with deep tracks; We came home, about 12:30 & started in raining, windy again, papa wanted to go over to Meng’s again, so we went as far as Rennecker, they said was no use going over, so we stayed there a little. the fire engine came again & put water on again, put it all out; we came back, went to bed was about 2:30.

Friday, January 10, 1930

It is awful icy.  Fr. Goottens and Frank walked through our wheat field going East.  Leroy Kuhns came here to get some sand. He was going to drive in and got stuck in our lane.  The Bruns brothers, Lester, Henry, Eugene, lifted him out.  Papa, Rosalia, Bertille, went out to Henry’s this morning but when we got to the hills we turned around & went back, we couldn’t get through.

George Freund’s barn burned down, Sat. Jan. 4.  Five loads of hay, 2 load of bundle oats & some wheat & machinery [were lost].  The fire was put out by some neighbors.
