Nice day hot. Over the holidays they were 409 reported dead radio said this morn, 200 by Automobile accidents, some drowning & fire & shooting. Went to Leo’s made hay, rained a little this afternoon.

Rosalia & Bertille went out washing at Leona’s today had dinner & lunch. Uncle Fred was here, he brought some papers here & had to get things for threshing at Oscar Birkners. & take Leona along out; they have them there for supper. Lots of cars passing by today. Kleber threshed over at Mengs; everybody was shooting in town this evening; Ed Scheinder was here.

We went & hoed in the corn patch. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, where here for lunch. It is in the paper today about John Kern shooting Butterweck arm of [sic – off], he is critical condition in hospital. Ed Scheider finished cutting wheat here today.
Thursday, Jan. 28, 1932
Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner here. He went down to Red Bud to get medicine, is kind on a sick list. Then he went to Mike Armstutz’s. A Lady was here & wanted eggs. We sewed cabbage seed today. Mrs. Joe Wacthel & Angela Eichenseer where here & the little boy Delmar. The Freeburg banker Mr. Hamil shot himself this morn. at 7:45 the paper says, the bank was in good standing but there was lot of talk & that made it worse for him.

Papa went after his pig from Ganley’s, he also went to see Martin Doyle’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had lunch here with us, then we all went to the sale, Bertille rode along with them in there car, to 2 miles from Evansville, Schulin’s sale the people that got shot that time. Aunt Mary bought a few articles, butter dish, glasses, bowl, table scarf, & bed spread, it all brought a nice price, just everything was sold so much. Alfred Eckert & Clarence Wagner, was here & sold us one chances of the quilts for the picnic. Hy. Armstutz & Liddie Birkner’s husband Ralph where here & got 3 doz eggs from us, she & him are out at Armstutz’s cooking peach butter today, he has vacation, yesterday they where at Springfield fair. Mrs. Val Fritsche called up & said that grandpa was witness when Mr. made his will so papa has to go to Belleville on the 15 Sept. to tell wether it is his handwriting. This evening we all went to Christ Buehler’s, Cletus birthday, we gave them 5¢ candy, Frank’s family & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where there.
