Awful hot. Bill [Klein] is starting in today, with Sq. Deal Motor Co. at Smithton, going in business for himself. Favre is going to open a shop at Freeburg. A customer of Bellville [sic] stopped in, bought 25 [cents] melon. Pap cutting corn. Bert [Bertille] canned 4 qt. tomatoes. Seen in paper Leroy Siefert & Eliz. Buss were married Wed; going to barn dance next Wed. nite at Brezzy Hill. He works in Kroger store in Waterloo. Al. Cleveland won medal $5. for Champion horse shoe pitching at New Hanover last Wed. at Farm Bureau pinic. John Koeinsbmork 70; died at Red Bud hospital will be buried Sat. morn. at Waterloo church & cemetery, manager of Waterloo Mill. We got card from Isd. Orlet, invitation to church wedding Thurs. morn. to Phylis Bugger of Belleville at St. Marys Parish. Went to Leo’s took watermelon along. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Henry’s family were all there celebrating Rosalia’s birthday.

Tuesday, Aug. 29, 1939

Went to Belleville with things all sold out, 8 doz. eggs. 18 [cents] – 10 watermelons – 25 – 10 [cents] ; potatoes, grapes, tomatoes. Bert [Bertille] got new dress & shoes. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up. Mamie & Lucinda were down to give us an invitation for her wedding dance at Daabs Club House, on Sept. 6.

Wednesday, Aug. 23, 1939

Nice day. Uncle Fred’s Wedd. Ann.; also the weddingt today of Orville Schmidt & Loretta Braun church at 9 o clock here; wedding dance at Log Cabin; Uncle & Aunt Mary stopped in, then went down. Written cards invitation. Bill [Klein] brought 3 heifers down this morn, pap bought from Mrs. Klein $40.00. Walsh Student for priesthood was here taking order for Ex. Magzaine [sic], will be his last yr. ordered it for 2 yrs. now. for $5.00; he had dinner here with us chicken soup. They were 2 ladies here from Belleville Antique buyers. sold fruit bowl for $1. & milk pitcher corn. for 25 [cents]. Cooked catsup made carrot relish, pumpkin pie, applesauce cookies. etc. Henry was up got bu. fallen peaches for preserves & catsup tomatos [sic]. Schmidts received so many presents; cakes were served by Katzler bakery of St. Louis. Schmidt Och. played for dance. attendants were Mary Braun a sister & Dorthy Peiffer friend & Schmidt brother & Clarence Dashner of Red Bud a friend, a new home is being erected in Red Bud near Gregson’s Filling Station.

Sunday, April 16, 1939

Cloudy with showers. Went to mass. Children made there first Holy Communion; all dressed in white. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in after mass awhile. Hubert McDermoot & Miss Schmidt were published for 2nd. time today. Mr. & Mrs. Lerow Haudrich are having there wedding dance at Totsch’s tonite, Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary got invitation card. The Happy Ramblers Orc. are playing & giving a dance at Kammlers tonite. Bill [Klein] came Bert [Bertille] went along to Dr. Eckerts, he wanted to pay him.

Ralph Prediger & Ethel Parker were married here, Paul & Agnes Parker attendants; dance at Daab’s Club House, had no invitation.

Thursday, Feb. 17, 1938

Raining all nite. Harry Wittenauer stopped in. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came had dinner & supper, helped quilt. The church people is quilting at Rennecker’s, put it in yesterday. Bert [Bertille] got invitation card for Gertie & Aloys Roth Wedding dance at Daab’s Club house next Tues. eve. There is a Wayne poultry feed meeting at Kammler’s hall tonite; sponsored by L. D. Mertz, giving away 100 lb. sack Wayne growing mash as attendance prize.

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1937

Clean chicken house, got oats over. Bertie baked cookies. Sun don’t want to shine, still cloudy & slick icy roads. Eggs .21¢. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon. Loyd Pabst came brought book on the Orbon Stores, Iornmasters [sic – Ironmaster. Sure lot people dying from pneumonia, & flue epidemic, 35 died in Chicago 1 day; lot have it in New Athens. Hofmeister’s are sick; ugly weather, to damp. The paper & radio say the Matteson 10 yr. old boy that was kidnaped [sic] from his home at Tacoma Wash. 15 das. ago was found slain along a highway, was said to be the boy, was nude, blow marks on forehead etc. A case something like the Lindeberg’s baby that time; haven’t found the kidnapers yet; The Matteson family was to pd. a $28,000 ransom. Rosalia went to invite the neighbors for the dance. Leo came, then they went to see his uncle Geo. Roths family, Alois & Gertie were also there.

Monday, Jan. 11, 1937

Henry came & we went along over to E. St. Louis to Furniture Stores; Dio [? – unclear] Slacks etc. Rose went up town took eggs up, 21¢; invited some people to her wedding dance. Floyd Pabst came brought potatoes up; the 3rd from the farm down there. Cloudy weather this days.

Nice an cool, morning & nights; We got an invitation card from Mamie Mueth & Slyvester Hellmer, to attend there wedding dance at Brezzy Hill on June 28 at 8 o clock; & to tell Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & Leona, Everybody welcome. The Waterloo paper never came this week. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here.
