Thursday, Nov. 23, 1939

Thanksgiving Day. Leo & family came had dinner & supper here, he plowed potatoe ground. Rose [Rosalia] & Bert [Bertille] went to Red Bud to Wedding mass of Marcella Gregson & Leslie Heyl; very pretty wedding, bride had long train white Satin dress with short veil & her attendants 2 sisters, one in rust & green with veils & wreath to match dresses; Walter gave her away & best man were Robert Heyl & Cletus Gregson; during the ceremony a terrible earthquake, roared just shook the church, people all went out, for a few mins, some places it was awful bad. Jerome Cortner house Chimney was cracked & did damage several other places; some plaster fell in Red Bud church, Gregson & Heyl had wedding dance at Log Cabin & Jerome Schilling & Elizabeth Shields had there wedding dance at Pautlers. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here, then they went to Waterloo to dance, there is also one at Brezzy Hill tonite. Bill [Klein] came this eve. The Thanksgiving & Turkey dinner was a big run out of Turkey had to served pork sausage, had fed 600 at 2′ o clock – turkey was all; had awful crowd.

Nice day. cloudy & little rain this afternoon. Ed Helfrich & Leona Horcher are being married at Columbia today, wedding dance at Pautler’s tonite. Wm Braun was here, signing oil leases for another 3 mons $1. Pap signed again. cut lawn, cut in 16 qts. kraut this morn. Pap went to meeting at Kammlers. Leo & family & Bill [Klein] was here this eve. Leo’s they had heavy rain.

Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1938

Not so cold today, 16 [degrees] this morn. Pap went out & got load wood for Emil; this afternoon got wheat at Henry’s, & got crushing done. Fire engine went down to Joe Hempe’s; machine shed burning implements burned; that is on Mrs. Albert Gregsons farm. The Officer that won at election day of Monroe Co. are giving a free dance at Pautler’s tonite. The Young People of Parish here are having a party also tonite.

Saturday, May 4, 1935

Leona brought the boy’s up, they went to St. Louis to get permanents, Annie went along to. Awful cold again. Rain a little this morn. We went to Waterloo to Pautler’s Wedding dance of Red Mueller & Heller what a crowd. Pals of Harmony furnished musci [sic] didn’t start till 9 o’clock. The bride wore lace green dress & silver slippers, & bouquet pinned on, the bridesmaid wore blue crepe; the groom is driver for the Farm Bureau Service Co. Raining all night, it was awful; still everybody went.

Thursday, Feb. 7, 1935

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & went home again while it was froze. We went to Belleville this afternoon. Rosalia went to see Mrs. Rennecker; to get quilt pattern of “Goose Trot.” Mike Keoinstein is in Belleville Hospital. There is a free picture show at Pautler Hall, in Waterloo given by Grosse. Mr. & Mrs. Lester Gregson & family where here this evening, we payed 5 pinochle, the boys went to sleep. It is raining out. Eggs are 30¢ now.

Saturday, Jan. 26, 1935

We went out to Uncle Fred’s, Aunt Mary’s birthday, we had dinner & supper, played cards had radio. Leona brought the kids up to stay all night here, Rose & Berti went along with them to Waterloo to Pautler’s to Laf. Geodell’s birthday dance, gents 25. ladies free, Geodelle’s Orchestra; nice size crowd present. Henry played drums; but got sick; little too much, I guess Ha-

We butchered 2 hogs, 155 & 200 lbs. Uncle Fred, Henry & family, all helped, had lunch & dinner. Uncle & Aunt also stayed for supper, then in evening went along with us to Pautler’s Hall, dance, musci [sic] by Moonlighters, Gents 25 & ladies free; last dance now before Advent; pretty nice crowd. Hy. Armstutz was here.

Thursday, Nov. 29, 1934

Thanksgiving Day. Rose & Berti went to mass. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile, then went up to help at the Turkey Dinner at the School; all day affair, lotto this afternoon. Eugene Bruns stopped on business. We made ribs & dressing, pumpkin pie, cranberry relish. Leona & Billy came up to meet Miss Klube on the bus this morning, she is visiting out here today. Mr. Roy Pautler & Miss Lavina Goedelle were married at the Red Bud Catholic parsonage this afternoon, Friedrich of Colombia & Winehof of Waterloo married this morning, we went to Wedding dance at Pautlers musci [sic] from Dupo. Jaegher & Minneman wedding couple also attended the dance, were married at priest house. Uncle Fred came down a little while, said there was a nice crowd at the turkey & Lotto this afternoon. It rained again this evening.

Cool wind this morn. Sheutte by Waterloo died, the man, that Mrs. Sheutte insane, put poison in there food. A free dance at Donahue’s musci [sic] by Nite Hawks & a free wedding dance in Pautlers Hall, musci [sic] by Moonlighters tonite. This morning about 10:30 Irvin Buehler, 7 yr old son of Chris Buehler, was struck unconsious [sic], while playing with tires on the hard road, in front of Parker’s house, they were all there helping with threshing, the driver of the car, was Frank Schwartz of R.R.1 Belleville. Irvin was brought to Hecker to Dr. Eckert & then the ambulance was called & taken to Belleville hospital, where he is still the same, fractured head & back & wrenched leg. The car nearly hit Cletus to. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & papa went to Hyde sale in Red Bud, who lives in John Rennecker’s house, bought a few articles. Henry & Leona went to Belleville, left kids here, bought new shoes & dress. this evening took us along, kids stayed here, went to Pautler Pavillion, Kopp’s Wedding dance; pretty large crowd. Donahue’s was nothing some said. Boy! did Walter Reheis feel good!
