Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville selling. Marita stayed here; had beef soup dinner. Eggs 28 [cents]. Bert [Bertille] varnished kitchen floor this eve. Ted Eichenseer is building double garage, he purchased a 1939 Demonstrator Chev. from Kaiser at New Athens. Hy. Bruns moved his family & household articles last Sun. to Gambach farm, were [sic] he will now start farming, there. Mrs. Fristsche has her house for rent.

Rained this morn. & heavy & little hail, no threshing here today. Bill [Klein] stopped in this morn. We went to Waterloo this afternoon to church & Farm Bureau Office. Barney Kaiser & Joe got Matt Crowe’s place through forclosure [sic]. Went out to Uncle Freds & A. [Aunt] Marys this eve. awhile.

Awful hot. Pap dug 2 rows potatoes. H. Wittenauer was here, going to thresh here tomorrow. Transfer in paper of Barney Kaiser to Joe Kaiser. We received the books for pinic [sic] at Red Bud from Fr. Spors. Henry Grossman 62 & Clara Keim 18 of Floraville were married last Sun. in St. Louis, dance in eve. at Keimes. Lightening last Sat. nite; stroke several places at Waterloo Hermans. Country Club; Johanning had 3 cows killed. Bill Weitkamp & Vivian Ripley beauty operator of Waterloo were married last Sat. in St. Louis. Some W.P.A. workers are back on job & others of [sic – off] for good; they had dynamite laid for quarry here by Hecker if they started in working, they would blow things up, so they didn’t work. We went to Leo’s awhile this eve; threshing at M. Mueth.

Friday, June 23, 1939

Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came. Bert [Bertille] went along sold all berrie, potatoes & apples; finished at 9:30; went good. Had dinner here, & took Marita along home again. Uncle Fred went to Athens after so more boxes, A. [Aunt] Mary stayed here. Bert [Bertille] cut lawn & cleaned; Notice of foreclosure of Mat Crowe by Barney Kaiser was in paper today. Waterloo is putting up $5.00 reward for capture of guy that bombed Schaefer House last week, causing $750 damage.

Sunday, Dec. 11, 1938

Went to Red Bud 7 o clock. Leo & family came, Marita stayed with pap, & Bert [Bertille] went along with them to Belleville to redication [sic – rededication] of St. Mary’s Parish Blessing by Bishoff [sic] & mass by Frs. Orlet, Kaiser & Hoff; beautiful church & much larger, lot of people at church; had dinner for priests. We came home, had dinner here, pap cooked. Bill [Klein] & Bert went to Henry’s this eve. playing cards; had pie cake etc.

Sunday, Sept. 18, 1938

Went to mass. Cool today. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. AuBuchon & Purtle were published at Red Bud for 1st time this morn. Floraville has pinic [sic] & Home Coming today & chicken dinner & supper, the church. Belleville street fair which was to be last nite is posponed [sic] till today & nite; on account of rain last nite. Hubbard came back again today, wanted to see mule; but was to late didn’t go to Henry’s, coming again some time later to see it. Clem Parker & Lar. Kaiser giving birthday dance at Kammler’s tonite. Adm. 25 [cents]. Happy Ramblers playing, nice crowd. Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to Floraville pinic [sic], they had open air dance. Schmidt’s playing, to cold for pinic; crowd was pretty fair in afternoon, but not as good in evening to cold. Greg Neff’s had their baby girl christened at Paderborn this afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Bill Karban sponsor, called it Dorothy.

Wednesday, Aug. 31, 1938

Pap hauled posts, has wood & all hauled now, got corn fodder from U. [Uncle] Freds. Went to barber shop got hair cut & shave. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up again this morn. cutting corn etc. The Wedding picture of Pete Kaiser 31 & Adella Karban 20 was in paper were married last Sat. morn. in St. Louis, in St. Peter & Paul’s Church. Attendants Bertha Karban her sister, & Lawrence Kaiser, cousin to groom. Wore white dress with long veil, carried flowers, Lilies, nice picture. Mrs. Emma Bechtold of Waterloo passed away 57 yrs. will be buried at Waterloo this afternoon; has 4 children, 1 boy Armin, 3 girls Ida Wright, Malinda Valmeyer & only 1 single Viola; also the boy was at home. Arthur Dour & Reickert girl are being married today, dance at Keims, Floraville.

Saturday, March 12, 1938

Beautiful day. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, pap went along to Kessler’s sale; such a crowd; fair price. We went out to Henry’s celebrating Floyd’s birthday which is tomorrow; 9 yrs. old, grandpa [Anton] gave him a nickle [sic] for playing accordion, we had pie & cake. Wulher [? – unclear] the ex pres. of Belleville bank, his picture was in paper; also Louis Kaiser’s girl – 6 yrs.

Tuesday, Feb. 22, 1938

Holiday. Went to Leo’s, Pap put there meat away, Bert [Bertille] went along to church with them, to wedding mass. Aloys Roth & Gertie Cortner; best was Hy. Roth & Viola Cortner. Gertie was dressed all white satin & lace set in, veil long. L. Kaiser flower girl, in white carring [sic] basket flowers; Viola with a red dress, silver slippers; had Ford garage men’s Dealers car. We had dinner by Leo’s. Chris Buehler got a hide here that Henry brought up yesterday, he butchered beef yesterday. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came took Bert [Bertille] along to Wedding dance at Daab’s, large crowd & lot presents received. Jac Schoeneborn, Ron Schilling, Laf. Geodelle furnished music, we also stopped in Smithton at Orlets. Mrs. is sitting up, but is weak.

Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1937

Foggy day again. Bert [Bertille] washed. Emil came over awhile this morn. Pap & him walked up to Frank Emery’s funeral this afternoon 2 o’clock services at house; then to city cemetery, he was 63 yrs. of age. had been ruptured some time ago; Pallbearers were Vic Eichenseer, Jac. Neff, Steve Rennecker, Oscar Klotz, Adolph Lother, Bill Fritsche. Wagner boy’s came got 4 doz. eggs for Mehrmann 25 [cents] today. Mrs. Bill Kaiser was taken to hospital in ambulance yesterday, double pneumonia, for 6 days; had Dr. Frein & nurse out yesterday also. Mr. Martin Fritsche here in town also has double pneumonia; so much sickness around & real weather for it to. Miss Kate McDermott who was making her home in St. Louis past while, suffered stroke Sun. morn, was taken to Red Bud hospital, were there she died, will be buried tomorrow morn, at Tipton church & cemetery at Koch [? – unclear]. Wagner’s family came this eve; we play 7 games pinochle, ladies winning every game.
