Rained this morn. again. Went to Red Bud to Louis Deincks sale Mrs. Chas. Hepp’s father; this afternoon so much to sale & crwod. Percy Starr Auctioneer, we got jugs. 2 – 3 – 5 gal. each. 16 [cents] 35 [cents] things sold pretty good, good prices. Bert [Bertille] went to Cowells & got cigars won at Red Bud pinic [sic], took them to Guker’s & traded for small cigars – they were the 2 for 5 [cents]. $1.10 Henry came this eve. brought potatoes last now, all dug.

Cold again this morn; Kahmers have sale starting at 10. Starr auctioneer again. Harms Excutioner [sic]. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & pap & Bert went to Kahmers sale, about 10:30, all day, we bought wood bar 10¢ & cook pot & flour sifter 25¢; lot of people there, things went quick. Geo. Wagner & kids were over awhile; The Gen Sen [? – unclear] man was at the sale today also. Sure cool morn & evenings. The Walkathon at Belleville is still going at 9 o’clock tonite it is 1008 hrs. for 6 couples & 1 girl; the winners to receive $1,000.
Saturday, Aug. 17, 1935
Papa went out to Henry’s. Clarence Wittenauer’s milk truck struck Henry’s colt & knocked it in the air, is awful bad, has a big hole in shoulder; Wittenauer has insurance, & he got the veterain [sic – veterinarian] out; & bandaged it up a little. Pretty serious they say. Henry, Dick, Grover, Emil, all up making hay had dinner, 2 loads here & took 1 load home; today & last nite; he broke the wheel of, so this morning he went up to get Emil’s wagon & had the colt loose & sure it had to get hit. Casper Horschmann has sale on the Barney Kaiser farm this afternoon. Al. May auctioneer. Ivo Buehler is moving Louis Voges from Sethfest farm to Cowell place in blackjacks, from which Esthers [Estkers?] moved to the bottoms, Aaron Papbenberg moved them. Freeburg Homecoming today. Donahues has a free dance tonite. Blossom City Boys playing. We went out to Henry’s to see the colt, it eats, but still lies down.

Otto Rahn of near Red Bud have a baby girl; also Dr. Pautler have a baby 9½ [lb] boy Paul. The morning’s & evenings are rather cool. Mrs. Chas Fleckenstein has a sale today. Papa & Berti went, got the drill for 50¢ brought it along home, binder $1.40 & the wagon $32; & corn plants $26; highest things sold; to some one from Baldwin; the binder is still out yet, rather fair crowd, Grossman auctioner, Lawrence Weigand clerk. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came awhile from the sale. Monroe Feurer was here in the morning counting our hogs. 15 pigs 1 sow, checked up the papers, see if everything was correct. A man here wanted buy old gold; one here selling washing machines. Levi Gregson bought the automobile at the sale; one just like his, tire all flat, & no battery in it for $11.50. Emil pulled it home for him, behind his car. Gus Klotz came & borrowed our lime dust spreader. Mehrman got 8 doz eggs 21¢ he papa, also Metz.

We baked cherry pie; Leslie Siebert & Alivera Jatho are to wed this afternoon in Smithon [sic] by Rev. Hasto at 2:30, she is to wear pink silk & blue sash ribbon, the attendant will be, her sister & husband, of St. Louis. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & we went to Bill Curran’s sale back by Tiptown. Boy! believe me it sure was some sale, 2 mules brought $405. mare & colt, $175.00 everything so high priced. 15 mon. credit, Alfred May was auctioner [sic], Vincent Walsh clerk. Curran got the job to be motor cop on Route 3, they will move to Waterloo now. Authur [sic- Arthur] Fisher is to move there. Lucille McCarthy told us today that Hoffman & Elvira Bozzay of Tiptown will get married Tues. June 6, at 3 o clock in the parsonage, & shower was given to Isabella Kalmer; Mr. & Mrs. Rennecker where over this evening, she was saying that Reuben Kammler got married today, he goes to Carbondale School, & married one from there, it must of been surprised, because Wagner’s wasn’t there.

It is cloudy this morn. Karl Boll gave his job up at Belleville & Milton Wagner has it now. Karl has no work. We cleaned little chick house, put on screens & washed windows. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Papa went out to Bill Sensel’s sale Nobbe of Waterloo is selling him out. Aunt Mary stayed at Buehler’s. Papa bought a cow for $10.00; everything sold cheap, quite a few people attended. Louis Whiel was sale auctioneer, he bought a crippled horse for 5¢, & rung up the rendering works at Belleville to get it. Papa bought corn too for 24¢ bus. Ed Neff bought the truck for $5.00. Mulligan boy’s & Clarence Wittenauer came this afternoon to see papa but he wasn’t home, so Clarence came back this evening; he wanted a piece for ballgrounds; so papa told him for $15. & the right of us all to watch them play, & nothing hauled in or out, they could have it; so he is going to see the rest & let us know. Henry & family came up, he brought the mule up. Philip Braun was here & wanted the recipe for curing Rheumatism; Mrs. Braun has it so bad. Bert went up to look for the mail.
