Making a star quilt out of scraps; Mrs. Phillip Kahmer of Fords Corner is getting buried this afternoon. Pretty cold weather again. Leona said she planted out cabbage plants yesterday & not very nice today for them; We got out sweet potatoes in the hot bed. Miss Lizzie Boll was the lucky one to win the quilt that was raffled at the euchre Tues. night. Joe Griffin got attendance prize. Casper Horshmann living on Barney Kaiser’s farm is awful bad sick at present; We received a letter from Alice, says raining there, flower are blooming, everything looks so nice; we sent her a letter today. Eggs 18¢, we shipped 19 hens, 123 lbs. over to St. Louis with Mertz & got 16½¢ lb; they lost 1 lb. going over, some weighed 7½-9 lbs; surely were & nice fat. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came , we all went to McDermotts, to see Margaret, she sure was laid out nice, pink dress, had so many beautiful flowers & so many cards for masses to be read for her; quite a few people came to the house, it was packed. Mrs. McDermott isn’t so good. Gertie Irose is getting along fine, since she was operated. Margaret – she was so weak of blood, they even took Ruth’s blood, but it didn’t help, they checked, Hubert also, both listed good.

The old guy what sharpenes [sic], etc is back in town again, was here today, papa gave the cross cut saw to sharpen for 35¢. A guy here wanted to sell auto paint, $2.00 box. Bernice Wagner got 1 doz eggs. Roy Staufenbiel had there little baby girl christened last Sun, called it Pearl Louisa, Mr. Joe & Pearl Griffin as sponsors. Mr. & Mrs. Leo Wittenauer of St. Louis have a baby girl. The Frantz Baker truck of New Athens, Edgar Wittenauer in charge had an accident on the Baldwin road, & damaged somewhat.

Henry & Emil came again, had lunch, dinner, lunch. Mrs. Rennecker has 3 extra men for dinner every day, besides her board, Mr. Eugene Smith of below Sparta, they are men that are figureing out the books at the station, the paper says that Albert Griffin has resigned for a highter position, some says he is going to school. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon, she bought a 3 lb. chicken & dressed it ready for tomorrow. Melvin Wagner was over awhile. We baked pumpkin pie. The banks are all closed today Columbus Day.

Papa & Rosalia went out & got a load wheat. Mrs. Rennecker has a boarder Ferd [Fred?] Smith. The St. Augustine Parish are having a euchre, lotto, pinochle; tonight; in the hall. We cooked kettle soap. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, we all went to the euchre, Rosalia had 8 points, she got a glass & plate, the rest of us got nothing had 7 points. Cecilia Coop won attendance prize, pillow cases. Mr. Albert Griffin was fired at the St. Louis Dairy Station here, another guy Smith got on his place. Frank Hilpert’s wedding ann. today.

Rose & Bert went to church, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner here. Gus Edler was here on business to see Uncle Fred. The Ladies Aid have pinic [sic] & cold supper; & childrens program, we went awhile, in the evening, The Night Hawks of Waterloo, Norman Heyl, etc. played stopped at 8 o’clock, they had to play for free dance in Foster Pond; we walked up to Maniers watched the dance there tonite, a pretty good crowd, Moonlight Orch. playing. John Griffin & Mamie Eichenseer, where the lucky girl winners at pinic [sic]. They had a nice crowd at the pinic [sic], The corespondents [sic] of New Democrat, are having there pinic [sic] at Daab’s Club House at Smithon [sic] today.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stoped [sic] awhile. George Wagner came to see if he could get a hog, for butchering tomorrow. A lady called to get eggs but they got some at Renneckers, ours to high I guess. 27¢ in the store here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, then Rosalia & Bertie went along to the play, in the School Hall given, by the Dramatic Club; name is the “18 Carat Boob.” players; are Elvira Braun, Pearl Griffin, Anna Marie Parker, Wilfred Eichenseer, Albert Coop, Agnes Parker, Elfreida Wittenauer, Joe Griffin, Edgar Wittenauer, Raymond Wittenauer, Angela Eichenseer, Lee Gregson. The hall was packed. Auchbon’s band of Red Bud, furnished musci [sic], & also tap dancing.

Flag Day. Rosealia [sic] & Bertille went to church at Red Bud to the Wedding High Mass of Ed. Schilling & Mary Forness. Chars. Schilling brother & her sister where the attendants. The bride wore white & veil, & bridesmaid wore light pink & with white hat with pink ribbon, organdy dress; the brothers & sisters where there to; he is going to have wedding dance at Oak Grove tonite; everybody welcome. Papa got the lawn mower sharpened at Bill Fritsche for 10¢. Papa went to the pulbic [sic] Sale of Joe Braun’s property in town which was turned over to Jac. Schmidt Receiver, he sold it lots & house all for $950.00, to Lester Gregson, the only bidders where Joe Griffin, Barney Kaiser, Lester; he got it. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening & we went to the Wedding dance, gave her sugar bowl & milk pitcher, Schilling’s Moonlighter’s furnished musci [sic], & a crowd. the brides slipper was sold by Gus Kabrinick brought $12.50.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile then left, they brought Lonie along up to church. Gilbert is sick, got fever & ear ache. Fr. Aydt said this morning, they ain’t sure if they can have the play tonite or not, because Lee Gregson was here praticing [sic] last nite & when he got home, they had to call doctor , he had 104 fevers. There where 2 fellows here looked at our mules this morning. Bolstead from Burksville. Our 3 hens hatched last Thurs. 28 chicks, we put them in basement & we set 3 more. We went to Waterloo this afternoon to Heyls Hatchery, chicks are 7¢, then we went to Luhrs Hatchery at New Hanover, & priced them there & seen all the little chicks he has there. We stopped in at Henry’s on our way home, & Frank & Gusta Dudenhoeffer & Lester Herfurner & his family where there from St. Louis, & also Gus Geodelle’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, then we went along up to see the play “A Path Over the Hills” at the School Hall, Adm. 25 reserved seats 35¢, there where a lot of reserved seats, & the hall was just packed, some standing, just filled up, the Red Bud Junior Orchestra played the musci [sic]. The players in the play where Joe Griffin, & Pearl, Vic & Rosalia Braun, Anna Marie & Agnes Parker, Edgar Wittenauer, Lee Gregson, & Alb. Coop, & a girl from Pickneville [sic], took Bessie Parkers place, in the afternoon they had a boy from there to because Lee was sick, but he played pretty good. Vic Braun & Anna Marie where negroes.

Rosalia & Bertille went to church, Papa wasn’t feeling very good so he stayed at home. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came over little while before dinner, they had there dinner along across the street. Ted Wuertz was here & told papa that our hog had bad teeth, that is why she don’t eat. Uncle Joe Mueth was here on business on telephone. Mr. Mueth is awful sick, they had the preist [sic] & doctor out, he don’t know any body, & weak; had a light stroke in his legs. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came over again this afternoon she went to church service & we played cards, papa had 1500 trump in diamonds, they where here for supper. Henry & family where also here for supper, they brought 1 gal. milk along for our pigs. Henry took Robert to Doctor Eckerts & wanted to get his tooth pulled, but doc ain’t at home. Fr. Adyt appointed 8 men on comittee [sic] this morning for a meeting after church this afternoon to straighten things out; about Frank Scheinwender taking lumber away & loading up fence roofing, doors, etc. but was stopped by Ed. Parker, Phil Braun, Griffin, Roy Stauenfbiel.

We all went to church, to Mrs. Mueth’s funeral; & rain some thing awful it just poured down; make it awful bad. Papa & Rosalia went along to the cemetery. The church was packed, some standing. The pall bearers where, Joe & George Schilling, Tom Haney [?], Wm. Ganley, Phil Braun, Geo. Parker. Fr. Adyt made a nice sermon; people where here from St. Louis, Waterloo, Smithon [sic], Red Bud & from all over. We went to Joe Wacthel’s this eve, played 5 hand pinochle, 4 games; & raining & dark. Papa went to the annual telephone meeting at Griffin, this afternoon, they came down a 25 on quaterely [sic] dues, it is now 75¢ every 3 mons. the drop tax is still the same $4.00 a yr. Papa had a talk with Al. Geodelle. They say the roads are pretty good for all the rain we had.
