Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1931

Mr. Harbaught the mineral feed man was here. Aunt Mary got the mail today. Mr. Laut looked at our pond. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Ettling, Henry, Wm. Ganley where digging the pond, they where here for dinner. They worked about 6 hrs, because it rained this afternoon. Ed Meng, H. M. Hill where here & looked at it. There was a lady here, bought 5 lb. sprs. 19¢ lb. Henry lost a heifer. Hon. Fred Kern passed away Mon. morning 4:30, got a parlyitic [sic] stroke. he was Editor of the Belleville News Democrat. Osie Neff & John Meuth had a most terrible accident today, they where crossing a bridge by Frisch korns [?] in Lord’s Corner, with a engine, when the bridge broke, the engine is still in the creek yet. Osie was scaled pretty bad on his leg, the skin was all of & his chest, John Meuth has a hole through his hand & has it in a sling. Osie say’s if it wouldn’t of been that Johny was there he, would still be lieying [sic] there. Gus. Klotz is sick in bed next thing to appendix. He has it in his side. Dr. Schmidt wife of Red Bud was buried this afternoon, she had pneumonia.

Saturday, Nov. 7, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up then we went to Belleville & got new dresses 79¢. Mrs. Staunfbiel was here to see Uncle Fred. Papa was up town this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this eve. from there. Rosalia & Bertille went along down to the brick house to a dance, there wasn’t many there so stayed in the machine & then afterwards went home. Wally Henson’s & his cotton pickers furnished musci [sic].

Saturday, Oct. 31, 1931

Henry brought a load of corn up, he was here for dinner. We started the furnace fire today. We all went to Belleville shopping, & confession, this afternoon. It rained a little today. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up stopped, here, awhile & then went to Buddy Etling’s dance, at the brick house tonight, he called over the lines. They sure played a dirty Halloween trick at Blackburn School, they dumped the shanty over, for the last 3 years, it was done.

Friday, Oct. 30, 1931

It is cold out today. The fellows that left there truck here yesterday got it again today. I seen in the paper that Ervin Boo & Vera Kropp are married now, he had his one leg taken off. The School children of the Public School is Hecker had apple picking last Sat. they picked 25 bu. one bu for every child & stored them in the School to be aten [sic] this winter. Irvin [?] Reheis was awarded $50 for selling tickets for the Lincoln Teathre [sic- theatre]. The Blackburn School is having a big Hallo’wen party tonight for the children.

Thursday, Oct. 29, 1931

We fried down a ham & a qt. saussage [sic].  Henry sold everything in Waterloo last eve, all but a piece backbone, 2 bacons, shoulder, for 20 & 15¢.  Henry & Leona went to Belleville this afternoon, & the kids stayed here.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up took some more turnips out, sold 1 bu. to Hy. Meng in trade with a bu. of sweet potatoes, for 50¢ bus. both of them.  There was a man here from Et. St. Louis & asked permission to leave his truck & a load of posts here, he had a flat tire & couldn’t get none at the store, so they unloaded the posts & left the truck here.  The egg man paid us 24¢.  We sold 63# Sprs. for 13¢ lb, Rosalia took them up.  She bought a lb. butter olea & got a towel along free, butter was 20¢.  This evening we all went up town, Rosalia & Bertille went to Kammler’s Hall to the dance given by the baseball club.  There wasn’t many there left them in free, then afterwords started charging 25¢ so we left.  Where home at 9 o’clock.  Bill Herzog & orchestra played.  Sure nice musci [sic].

Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1931

Papa went up town this morn.  He was talking to Adam Eckert & he says he lost about 31 hogs, every one he had, so he bought 3 from Wm. Naiser.  Just everybody is losing hogs, Ben Rausch had his vaccinated & still lost one.  Ed Parker lost some vaccinated, Sam Krehress are sick, the truck from Belleville are out everyday getting some in.  We washed, ironed, patched today, for once it didn’t rain, we had several showers during the night.  Ed Meng was here awhile.  Henry  & family came up & brought some potatoes along, to cook tomatoes home to make catsup with.

Monday, Oct. 12, 1931

This week there is a Mystic Western Show & vaudeville in Kammler’s Hall, all week, adm. 10 & 25¢.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, him & Papa went to Waterloo on business.  They heard Mrs. Hempe had died & was buried this morn. at Tiptown.  Rev. Fr. Beelman also was buried this morn. at Belleville, he was at present pastor of St. at Elizabethtown, & a few years back was at Paderborn.  The children of the paraochial [sic] school where dismissed today, on account of Coloumbus [sic] Day.  It rained mostly all day.  The egg man stopped but didn’t take the eggs today, he had too many, we had 12 doz. for him, so will have to save them for Thurs.

Friday, Oct. 2, 1931

Leona brought Henry up with the car then went back home again.  He was here for lunch, dinner, then he took the tractor home & pap the team, Rosalia went out with the Whippet to get him.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up this afternoon & put there stove in, cleaned it all out.  The transfer is in the paper, selling land to Oswald Neff.  The Braun Children bought their farm back again for $4,000.00, that is Henry Brauns farm.  Joe Wacthel had his house refrishents [sic -refreshens?] with a new coat of paint, the last few days.  The Hoffman Garage was leased by Nobbe Co. into which Nobbe will move Oct. 1.  The carpenters are busy this week, tearing down the old frame porch of the parsonage at Waterloo, to which a new one will be erected, & also a garage, which will make things look different.  In Waterloo they now park there cars in the middle of the street, that is Main St.’s.  Mrs. Harry Wittenauer is at present in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, undergoing treatment.

Sunday, Sept. 20, 1931

We all went to Red Bud church.  The Hecker Priest read Ignatz Neff name off this morning, he signed the paper at Belleville, this week his kids can come back to school if they want too.  Osie Neff was here looking for Uncle Fred.  Today is homecoming at Floraville.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here & then about 4:30 left for the picnic.  Joe Hibbert the carpenter & his brother Frank & a cousin was here for a short visit.  He was visiting Hecker friends this afternoon.  This evening we drove out to Henry’s took them along & went to the basement floor dance at George Freund’s.  Adm. 30¢ as enter.  Rheinhardt & Skaer furnished musci [sic], 3 pieces.  Papa was up at the store awhile & he also stopped at George Wagner’s, she said that her sister Lorenia Merhmann & Orlindo Skaer are getting married next Sat. Sept 26 at Floraville.

Saturday, Sept. 19, 1931

Papa went to Belleville today.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up in the afternoon, he chopped his dead trees off across along the highway.  Kammler had a dance this evening, but I don’t think it was very crowded not according to the cars parked in this end.  Too many other dances this even. – Chas. Sensel’s, Fred Webers dance.
