Tuesday, Dec. 20, 1932

Rosalia is on the sick list, cold. We washed, fried in liver sausage, cured meat. Hy. Armstutz was here wanted to get eggs for Fritz, but we sold ours yesterday, the egg man also took 5¾ lb. ribs at 12½¢ lb. along. eggs are 32¢. Eichenseer pay 28 today Hy. said. Braun’s 32¢. Bertille went up town. There is quite a few people sick, Jerome Cortner, Robert Lippert, Irvin Buehler, Nita Stauenfbiel, Walter Wittenauers. They rang over line that is Mr. Hill called in to Belleville Democrat, that Mr. Conrad Saul on Uncle Pete’s place, he died Sat. night. Wm. Kraemer was buried yesterday morning, the funeral went through, the Hecker church was tolling the bells too. they stopped at the corner here first & then went on; about 5 cars, from Mo.

Sunday, Dec. 18, 1932

Wm. Kraemer of St. Louis died & will be buried Mon. morning at Round Prairie, he was formily [sic] a native here. Miss Marjorie Rausch, Julius Raush’s daughter won the beauty queen last Sat. night, at the Farm Bureau dance. last year, Miss Myrtle Ruhl won, Marjorie was selected first out of 6. Second Marie Kolmer. We bought 20 lbs. beef at 11¢ & grinding free at Strecks yesterday; they took us all through the place, where its hanging, kitchen, smoke rooms, its nice there but cool in there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here for dinner, she bought a soup bone & pap cooked the soup, he wasn’t feeling very good, so he stayed home. Rosalia & Bertille went to church. We played cards this afternoon. George Roever came to look at a pig’s, he wants to buy some.

Tuesday, Dec. 13, 1932

Cleaned chicken houses, put clean straw in. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s got wheat & oats. We baked Christmas cookies this afternoon. Klotz’s, Fritsche’s, Boll’s, Buehler’s are all butchering today, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had to help Christ. nice day. Fr. Grooten’s is very ill, some said he was out of mind.

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1932

It is freezing, cold. We started the furnace fire again this morning, didn’t have none all week because it was so nice & warm. Fr. Grootens was taken to the hospital last Friday, suffering from a nervous break down. Frank was also sick, he stays up at Belleville with the Becthloffts, the house isn’t finished yet.

Monday, Dec. 5, 1932

We washed, ironed; nice day warm. Mrs. Louis Armstutz is on the sick list. The egg man got 7 doz. eggs 33¢. Papa went out on a business trip looking for corn this afternoon.

Sunday, Dec. 4, 1932

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here a little while this morning, they had a different priest here in Hecker, this morn. Fr. Grooten’s is sick, they say. Mr. Ralph Ettling was here this afternoon & paid of $175.00 part interest $25.50 still due. He told us they had the Sheriff out to Wuertz’s to get there dog, they had pined up in the house, sheriff got there dog for them, he went in the house & got it, at night time. The Wuertz’s boy’s jumped on Buddy & the old lady ordered them of the place, Henkel & Buddy, so they left & got the sheriff, to get them dog. Louis Armstutz was here awhile. We went out to Cleveland’s this evening played 6 hand pinochle, Mr. Cleveland & Rosalia & Bertille partners & the other 3 partners, played 4 games, wine & cake, popcorn where served. That solo set out there where at Papenberg’s last night they said.

Wednesday, Nov. 16, 1932

This morning everybody was out shoveling snow, it drifted a lot, good snow balling & sleigh riding today. Papa & Bertille went to Red Bud this afternoon, got some giz and capsules to worm our chickens, we did it this afternoon. Tonite there is to be euchre & dance at Paderborn, we had intended to go, but not by this weather we won’t go. Leona called for Dr. Eckert to come out there, Floyd took sick, he wouldn’t talk, had craps, Dr. said it come from eating to much warm pumpkin pie, after he vomited he was better, he has fever. It was about 8′ oclock when she called for him this evening. Floyd had been sleeping already.

Monday, Oct. 17, 1932

Mr Jung egg man was here & told us about some roosters. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this afternoon. Today is Kenneth Kemp’s birthday. Skinny Petri is getting buried this afternoon at Waterloo. Papa fixed a brick wall for flowers all around the house. Clara Wagner & kids came over to see it. George is working out at Ed. Cortners, tomorrow he has to go to Belleville. Uncle Fred went up to see Louis Birkner he is down in bed with rinhmatism [sic – rheumatism].

Sunday, Oct. 16, 1932

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here awhile. Mr. Bectholdt from Smithon [sic] was here & got his 6 pigs for $20.00. We went out to George Boll’s to shooting match but didn’t win anything, ducks & geese where raffled. We went to church this eve, talked with Marcella & boy’s Fahey’s. Mrs. Fahey is still awful weak. The St. Augustine’s Parish have euchre tonite. Mr. & Mrs. Frank Birkner are married 3 yrs. today.

Friday, Sept. 30, 1932

We made a lb. of butter again this morn, but no chance selling it. Rosalia & Bertille went to Red Bud this afternoon to see Mr. Voss grocery store, wether [sic – whether] they buy cream, they buy it, so I guess will sell it there, 14¢ today, they are paying, take it anyday. While at Red Bud we went to see Mrs. Owen Fahey, she is pretty weak, but I guess will get along alright now the way the doctors’ say. She got operated last week on appendix, now a lump of matter formed, & they opened it up this afternoon while we were waiting. Marcella was there. Rosalia got a letter from Miss Bell asking us all to come & see her Sun. all day, so we stopped in there to & told her, we couldn’t come on Sun. Angela Eichenseer is getting along good at Belleville, she will come home by Mon. She got adenoid & tonsils & growth in mouth removed, she is in a room of 5 patients, it costs her $12 a week. Mrs. Griffin is so awful weak, she is on the same floor with Angela. I seen in the paper that we have a Dentist Schilling in town in Maniers place started last Wednesday.
