It is cloudy this morn. Karl Boll gave his job up at Belleville & Milton Wagner has it now. Karl has no work. We cleaned little chick house, put on screens & washed windows. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Papa went out to Bill Sensel’s sale Nobbe of Waterloo is selling him out. Aunt Mary stayed at Buehler’s. Papa bought a cow for $10.00; everything sold cheap, quite a few people attended. Louis Whiel was sale auctioneer, he bought a crippled horse for 5¢, & rung up the rendering works at Belleville to get it. Papa bought corn too for 24¢ bus. Ed Neff bought the truck for $5.00. Mulligan boy’s & Clarence Wittenauer came this afternoon to see papa but he wasn’t home, so Clarence came back this evening; he wanted a piece for ballgrounds; so papa told him for $15. & the right of us all to watch them play, & nothing hauled in or out, they could have it; so he is going to see the rest & let us know. Henry & family came up, he brought the mule up. Philip Braun was here & wanted the recipe for curing Rheumatism; Mrs. Braun has it so bad. Bert went up to look for the mail.

The creeks are out nearly all over this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family where all up for dinner & supper. Henry came up with the buggy, the road is awful bad, it is just about all that they can get through with horses at the hills. Wittenauer hauls the milk with the wagon. The rabbit laid eggs by George Wagners & here this afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Levi Gregson & Agnes was here this evening. Mary Wagner had a big surprize [sic], her brothers & sister & family, celebrated her birthday 43rd at George Wagners today, all Kammler’s, Fritsches, Mehrmann’s.

We waxed the dinning [sic] room floor. Mr. Metzger came & paid $65.00 for the mule. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came then went to Belleville, & came back here again for supper & brought our glass along what belongs to the dresser. It rained nearly all day, colder this evening. Seen in the paper that on Kaiser & Wittenauer foreclosure, H.M. Hill is appointed as reciever [sic]. Miss Marie Krack was taken to the hospital again in St. Louis. It was in the Belleville paper that Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Hepp & Melba & Mildred attened [sic] a miscellanoues [sic] shower given in honor of Miss Lela Deucker of East St. Louis. A boam [sic – bomb?] was sent to Fr. Coughlin & Pres. Roosvelt [sic] again.

We baked bread, coffe [sic] cake. Papa & Rosalia went to Waterloo with a load of wheat, but didn’t receive no money only a slip of paper, for 14 bus. wheat @ 49¢ $6.86. They got 50 cabbage plants from Jungs for 13¢, they are nice too we planted them out this afternoon. St. Patrick’s Day, but we didn’t plant any potatoes, ground is to wet. It is in the paper for court week this week. Jos. Brauns, business & Hy Armstutz, Gambacher’s, Stifflers, all cases coming on, Philip Meuth & Max Schelibe, foreclosoure [sic]. Barney Kaiser & Elnora Wittenauer & a good many others.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up here & papa went along with them to Mrs. Louisa Soul’s sale, but didn’t buy anything brought a fair price. They stayed here for supper. Ike Napier come & paid for the hog 450 – $13.90. Ed Scheinder got 43½ doz. eggs for hatching, but only paid $2.20 so far still $2.15 to pay yet, but had no more money. Roy Stauenfbiel brought the crushing down this eve, it wasn’t working, this morning; something was out of order. There was awful large attendance at Saul’s sale. Mrs. Vic Eichenseer, Lucinda, Bud, & Angela & Clarence Wittenauer came this evening, we played pinochle six hand. 2 games.
Sunday, Feb. 26, 1933
Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile then left, they brought Lonie along up to church. Gilbert is sick, got fever & ear ache. Fr. Aydt said this morning, they ain’t sure if they can have the play tonite or not, because Lee Gregson was here praticing [sic] last nite & when he got home, they had to call doctor , he had 104 fevers. There where 2 fellows here looked at our mules this morning. Bolstead from Burksville. Our 3 hens hatched last Thurs. 28 chicks, we put them in basement & we set 3 more. We went to Waterloo this afternoon to Heyls Hatchery, chicks are 7¢, then we went to Luhrs Hatchery at New Hanover, & priced them there & seen all the little chicks he has there. We stopped in at Henry’s on our way home, & Frank & Gusta Dudenhoeffer & Lester Herfurner & his family where there from St. Louis, & also Gus Geodelle’s. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, then we went along up to see the play “A Path Over the Hills” at the School Hall, Adm. 25 reserved seats 35¢, there where a lot of reserved seats, & the hall was just packed, some standing, just filled up, the Red Bud Junior Orchestra played the musci [sic]. The players in the play where Joe Griffin, & Pearl, Vic & Rosalia Braun, Anna Marie & Agnes Parker, Edgar Wittenauer, Lee Gregson, & Alb. Coop, & a girl from Pickneville [sic], took Bessie Parkers place, in the afternoon they had a boy from there to because Lee was sick, but he played pretty good. Vic Braun & Anna Marie where negroes.

Papa got crushing done. We finished the quilt & took it out of the frame. Mrs. Joe Watchel & boy where here this afternoon, & invited us to go to Angela’s Eichenseer’s this evening, she is 18 yrs. old today. Rosalia & Bertille went, stopped in at Watchel & till she was ready then by Laut’s, Olivia & boys went too, & Clarence Wittenauer & Cecil Pour where the only ones at the party, we played 6 hand pinochle, hamburger sandwiches, & pickles, & cake, where served, we gave her a towel & Clarence brought here a Ivory compact, that is all she got then. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where at Rod & Gun Club House at a dance, public, Cortner’s invited him to help furnish musci [sic].

Papa & Rosalia cleaned chicken houses. Bertille washed, we quilt this afternoon, we got 11½ for eggs today. Josie Keller is 43 yrs. old today. Bertille wrote a letter to Creses tonite. Walter Wittenauers have a little baby since Sat. nite, Cecilia Coop is working there.

It is a nice day again. Steve Rennecker went butchering at Al. Heyl’s. Bertille isn’t feeling well today. Aunt Mary called up to see how we all where; there all about the same yet. Clarence Wittenauer had a general call put over the lines that he had lost a dog. This evening he called into Sheriff Al Gauen, what he should do, because he knew the party was has his dog, he wanted to know wether [sic] it should notify him or just go & get it there. Papa & Rosalia shelled corn this afternoon & killed 25 mice.
