Went to first mass. Fr. Stern is still not able to say mass. In Hecker & Waterloo children making there solemn Commioun [sic – Communion] today. Emme Eckardt came got the veil again, getting confirmed next Sun. here. Con. Myerscough stopped in. Lester Gregsons came, pap was elected to serve as judge on town election Apr. 20. he is going to take the job. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile after church. Mary Havey & man of E. St. Louis were published for last time this morn. We went out to Henkels paid for the seed $12. then went to Henrys. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came there to, we all had supper there. Uncle & pap went in woods, & Rob. also, Floyd is sick, dizzy spell he gets, cold. Set 2 more duck eggs. The mail carrier brought the rest of there chixs the same day, 250 & all were dead in box; they [Henry] wrote a letter to the co. right away but so far didn’t receive no answer; Henry said, thought the chics might of been chloroform. Cyril Haudrich is having a birthday dance at Pautlers, Am. [admission] 25 & 15¢. Skaers musci [sic].

Raining all morn, & heavy, we went to Red Bud mass, hospital priest, Oberlinkels said mass, Fr. Stern is in hospital suffering with nervous breakdown. Rain & mud make it bad for Quathamaner’s funeral this afternoon; he was about 45 yrs; has been ailing for quiet awhile. The Paderborn children are to make there solemn Coumioun [sic – Communion] this morn; tomorrow afternoon get confirmed. We are invited out to Geo. Berniers for supper this eve. We went out had supper, played cards, Alois Roth, was also there Rheinhardt didn’t come, to muddy; 2 of Berniers girls making solemn coumnioun [sic] & getting confirmed; bad morn. rain. Bert gave Theresa a dress.

Went to Red Bud, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had lunch here, another hot day & wind again. Smithon [sic] has Turner Pinic [sic] today. Willie Myerscough of near New Athens was overcome by heat and died this morn. pap’s Solemn Coummioun [sic] partner, they use to live close to Hecker went to church at Hecker. There are 500 people that have died from the heat. Northern states just like deserts, so dry, stock dying so fast that the owners have to bury them; more terrible, the corn dying here. We went to the turner pinic [sic] at Smithon [sic] this evening.

Beautiful day. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, awhile before mass. Mrs. Emma Eckert brought the veil back, had it borrowed for Emmie Solemn Coummioun [sic – Communion]. We went to Red Bud for 7:30 mass, but it is changed now to 6:30 & 8:30 masses, so we came to late, so stayed for high mass & benediction. The Evangical [sic] Church Ladies Aid got cold supper & pinic [sic] today, at church grounds. The Hecker Baseball Club has a dance at Kammler’s Hall musci [sic] by Schmidts. We went to pinic [sic] awhile. Pap went for supper, also Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary. Birkner’s Orch. played musci [sic]. Mrs. Milton Wagner won the free game of bluey, & also the quilt in lotto, & Mrs. Frieda Koreber won 1 quilt in bluey & 1 that was raffled out; sure luck. Edgar Wittenauer was stabbed with a knife last nite by Maniers, isn’t so bad; fellow from Athens; sheriff came out & took him to Waterloo Jail.

Mrs. Staufenbiel came & went along with Rose & Bert to church, had Solemn Communion at 7:30 mass, 6 boys & 6 girl, 1 boy took sick, & also 1 girl, Martha Agnes McDermott who is at hospital in E. St. Louis for appendix, also Keoinstein of below Hecker is over there, pretty bad. Bill’s daughter, she is young yet. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Clara & Agnes Gregson stopped from church. Ed. Meng Katie Klotz, all called here a short while to see pap, also Joe & Josie Alberta Gregson on there way home from Waterloo, stopped. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came back this evening again. It rained pretty good here, this eve. The baseball team has a dance at Kammlers Schmidts Merrymakers musci [sic]; the crowd wasn’t so large we heard. Omer came & we went to Pautler’s to Mrs. Martin Karban’s birthday dance, Rythm [sic] Kings musci [sic]. Gents 25¢ ladies free. Nice crowd.

Rosalia & Berti went to Red Bud church, had 8th grade graduation, during Mass. 4 girls, Catherine May, Evelyn Bendict, Rita Roscow, Mary Iva AuBuchon; all dressed in white, carring [sic] flowers, 2 flower girls. 6 boys, Cletus Helfrich, Ratz, Roscow, Hartmann. Thirtheen [sic] made there solmmen [sic] coummioun [sic] in Hecker, this morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stoped [sic] awhile after church, went home, came back this afternoon, went to Red Bud to band convention, 200 muscians [sic], 10 band. Steve Rennecker came over awhile; we walked up to see Mamie, but she had a date with Clem Parker, se we came home again, the 4 h club girls are giving a dance in Kammler’s Hall, Holloywood [sic] Orch. Belleville playing Adm. 25¢.

We went to Waterloo church, papa went to see Mertz. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here awhile. Hy. Armstutz & Cleveland stopped in. Surely is warm. We slept all afternoon, went over to Renneckers awhile this evening. They had solemn Coumioun [sic – Communion] at Red Bud, today Irene Buehler’s is along too, she is 11 yrs. old.

We left early & went to Waterloo church, after that we drove out to Louis Vogt’s to look at a horse, Henry & Henry Brinkman went along, went to Reichscheider’s, & to Bill Freunds, papa paid his bill, $22.81 chev repair & Bill $5.00 labor on it. In Red Bud first mass was at 5:30 high at 7:30 and solmen [sic – solemn] comunion [sic], & confirmation was at 10 o clock. It is awful warm again today. We went out to Uncle Freds, but no body home there, they where at Oscar’s; so we went to the cemetery, it is awful weedy there, Ignat Neff & Roth had there lots cleaned, so we drove to Ed Cortner’s & papa looked at his barn, he wasn’t at home, down in the creek bottom plowing. Mr. Hill was here & at the neighbors collecting news.
