Sunday, June 14, 1931

Today is Pinic [sic] in Floraville & one at the Round Prarie [sic] Church, on the hill.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed at Hecker all night, ready for church this morning.  We where at there place for dinner & lunch.  Hy. Armstutz stopped when he came home from the ball game.  Ben Rausch stopped & invited us all to come to the barn dance tonight at Webers, to surprize [sic] him on his birthday.  So we all went, it was mostly all old people there.  Sthiel & Herzog furnished musci [sic].  Papa & Rosalia went to Waterloo Church this morning, we went to Hecker, it was out in a hurry, no sermon & low mass, because he tought [sic – thought] the people where tired from the pinic [sic].

Monday, June 8, 1931

We all went working in the truck patch this morn.  Hy. Armstutz came there a while.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up to pick cherry’s – we helped to clean them, she gave us 2 qts & a pt. she still had 9 qts. for herself yet.  This evening we helped them work in there popcorn patch.  The Farm Bureau has a moving picture show in Pautler’s farm tonight.

Monday, May 18, 1931

Today is wash & iron day.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for lunch this afternoon.  Papa went out to help Henry make hay.  Emil was also helping.  Rosalia Bertille planted tomato plants in our truck patch this evening, we now have 119 down there.  Hy. Armstutz was here & got some watermelon seeds that Aunt Mary brought here.  He told us about the show people Jackson’s, they must of had a time this morning when they left.  The [racial slur omitted] Jake & the Dr.  Jake said he made his own medicine, so I guess that means he is a fake doctor, Jake said he would get him arrested this morning yet, he wait till he would get to Granite City.  We heard one night he took $67.00.  Thats quite a lot.

Saturday, May 9, 1931

I seen in the paper that Fritzie Boo had his leg taken off now, & is getting along nicely.  Martin Schilling’s have a little baby girl, they now have 2 boy’s & 2 girls.  Papa went down to the truck patch & planted pickle seed, he was over by Louis Armstutz’s a little while he called him over there.  Rosalia & Bertille went to the Jackson’s show tonight, & the people there, it was sure a crowd, most of them with there parked cars, they sold soap, medicine, & candy, it had slips in the boxes, Harold Wagner had one with it he got a big Indian Blanket, Rosalia [Rosalie?] Braun, Meba Hepp got teaspoons, Henry Bruns a mirrow, & many others received prizes.  They played the show “Crazy House” it was good.  They also gave free attendance thickes [tickets] out, we got 3 of them, chances to win a blanket.

 

Friday, May 1, 1931

Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morning.  This afternoon Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s to get a load of corn.  I seen in the paper that Ervin Boo was taken to the Hospital again in St. Louis for injuries due his right knee, while playing ball last summer.  Mr. Frank Scharfenberger was buried the past week, he was 70 yrs. old, & was a monument maker & business.  The Waterloo Milk Co. office was burglarized last Sunday $100 in cash was taken & $500 worth of checks where missing.  Louis Armstutz has purchased a new ford sedan, & made his first try out last Sunday.  Bill Horn from Columbia purchase the South Side Garage from Bill Haudrich, & he is working for Schrieber’s garage at Red Bud.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, they had lunch & supper here.  In the evening, we went to church, May Devotion.  Steve Rennecker was here & wanted eggs for setting but we didn’t have none.  Wilfred Eichenseer was just here this afternoon & got 2 settings, 30¢.  We got the chickens altogether now, so if they want them, that’s the only kind they can get.  Roy Staufenbiel was here this eve.- he came to ask for information, Robert Laut wanted to buy his house there for $150.00 & live there until he had a place to put it on.  But I don’t think Roy will do that.  We planted out cabbage & tomatoes in our truck garden today.

Thursday, April 30, 1931

It is raining.  Lester Gregson & family took Christ Buehlers big truck & hauled Lela & Ethel Duekers school children for a trip today.  Papa went up town this afternoon.  The town officers where all at Waterloo they will meet.  Jatho, Armstutz, Huber where also in this morning.  There was a dance at Robert Laut’s last night.  Henry’s were invited, but didn’t go.  They where here this evening, Henry & Bertille went to Henry Hepp’s to get leghorn eggs, he got 205 eggs.  There still 12¢ a doz.

Tuesday, April 28, 1931

We washed, ironed.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this morning to work their potatoes & garden.  They where here for dinner, lunch, & supper.  Papa got some papers from Arch Whiel for the Braun’s business, what there stock & things where praised at, & there Liabelities [sic].  Henry Hintze came here this evening & got 1 from each.  Henry Armstutz was here & wanted a mixing box, but we didn’t have any.  Henry & family where all up this evening.  Uncle Fred & Papa went down to Henry & Charles Hepp to see if Henry could get some leghorns eggs from him, he can get them by Thurs. night so Henry is going to take 200 eggs.  They are Brown Leghorns.  We went to Mrs. Eckerts this eve. but she wasn’t at home.

Thursday, April 23, 1931

Papa went down to Dr. Eckerts to pay for medicine.  $4.25 for the time when we had the measles.  Papa & Rosalia went out in the woods this morning & got a load of black ground to put around the house for flowers, & also filled up the holes in the lawn.  We had white frost this morning.  This afternoon we went down in our truck patch & set out 66 cabbage plants.  Hy. Armstutz came & talked a few words with us.  Steve Rennecker was over a little while while we where cutting the lawn.  Rosalia took the eggs to the store, they are 13¢ a doz.  We cooped 5 roosters this evening for fattening.  Today a year ago Mrs. Hirst was buried.

Saturday, Feb. 28, 1931

Hy. Armstutz was here & wanted Papa to sew clover seed, so it went down to the field & sow it.  This afternoon he went to Mrs. Bersche’s sale at Waterloo.  Bertille got up this afternoon for the first time for almost a week.  Rosalia is setting out onion sets today.  Papa planted 150 cabbage plants from Mrs. Johnny Kreher because neither one of us were able too at the time.  Our little chicks are doing wonderful now.  Elmer Rittemeyer also got his leg broken, the other day, when Adolph called he jumped out & broke his leg.  Adolph must be in a terrible condition the way they say.  Papa bought a few articles at Bersche’s sale this afternoon.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to a sale in Belleville, they bought a iron bed & a few other articles.  This evening Papa & Uncle Fred went in to get it with our truck. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here for supper.

Sunday, Feb. 15, 1931

Papa went to church this morning the rest of us didn’t go.  Tonight the Ladies Aid is giving a euchre & Bluey in Kammler’s Hall.  There is also one in Tiptown & tomorrow night the Catholics got one.  A rush before lent.  Schneiders got the measles also.  The way they say. Roy Staunebiels kids & Cletus Reagan also got the measles now.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Armstutz before the euchre tonight, because we got the measles here.  Rosalia is feeling alright but the measles ain’t gone away yet.  There were 18 tables tonight at the euchre and Bluey.
