Today we washed, ironed, patched, baked bread.  Papa & Rosalia aren’t feeling well yet.  I seen in the paper that the Police are searching for Ed. Neff of Belleville for hitting his father Conrad while eating supper.  Mrs. Rennecker is out helping Wm. Gregson’s threshed.  We cut the lawn this evening.

Monday, July 20, 1931

Today is wash, iron & patch day.  But the weather don’t look so nice this morning.  Leona called this afternoon & said we should come out & bake the cakes, & pies for threshing, so we bake 4 cakes, 11 pie shells.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was up this afternoon, papa had lunch with them this afternoon.  Papa sold 17 lbs. springer for 25¢ a lb. to a man from Belleville.  It started raining this evening & kept it up all night, we sure did need it too.  Papa took the clock of off the stove to get it fixed once.  Bertille went over to Mrs. Rennecker this evening & brought her there Red Bud paper back again.

Tuesday, July 14, 1931

Papa went out in the woods this morning to get some poles.  Today Slyvester [sic – Sylvester] Miller & Hilda Bertram are getting married.  Leona went to church to see it.  Her sister & brother where the attendants.  We got the report this morning that Henry S. Braun died last night at 7 o clock & will be buried Thurs. morn.  We heard he had heart failure & indigestion trouble & then again we heard, he went to get a drink of water by the well & fell over dead.  Clarence Wittenauer was here, he wants 3½¢ to haul wheat from Pabst’s to our place & takes 3 to Red Bud & 4 to New Athens & 5 to Freeburg.  So Papa got Eichenseer’s to haul it, they will do it for 3¢.  Bertille was by Mrs. Rennecker about a half hr. this evening.

Monday, July 13, 1931

Today is wash, iron & patch day.  Papa went out to Henry’s to get the posts for a shed, Henry brought them up on the wagon.  This afternoon Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, they where here for lunch, & supper.  He helped papa with the straw shed.  The Karr Range Co wind [? – unclear] through this afternoon & played the radio, it was nice.  George Wagner & the kids where here this evening.  Bertille got a recipe book from Mrs. Rennecker this afternoon.  Alfred Stahl had awful bad luck the other day.  Some thing caught fire & it came up to the seperator [sic] & started burning the fire stuff there & he tried to fight it, & got his hand all scorched & burned & also his arm, he hooked the engine too it & broke 4 links, so there it was, so the water wagon came then & it got it out, then he was on the engine & fell off & broke the same arm.

Saturday, June 27, 1931

Henry & Emil had lunch, dinner, lunch here.  Hy. Armstutz was also here for dinner he helped to schock some today.  Henry cut his oats for him too, & he smashed the binder all to pieces, he says he won’t be able to cut his at home anymore with it.  He is finished up here now.  Karl Boll & Marcella Ettling are being married & gave a dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill.  Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Henry & Leona all went, but we didn’t.  Bill Herzog furnished the musci [sic], they say it sure was some bum wedding dance, not many people, all was outside.  She was dressed with a white dress & hat, shoes & pale pink stockings.  Buddy & a girl from St. Louis where the attendants.  We all went over to Rennecker’s this evening, Jake Klein’s family where also there, celebrating Steve’s birthday.  He got a 1 gal. ice cream & Oh Boy was it good in hot weather?

Wednesday, June 10, 1931

We sure did have some rain last night.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was here for lunch this afternoon then her, & Bertille went over to Ed. Meng’s, took them some flower, & brought some of there’s back.  Mrs. Rennecker canned 41 qts. of cherries, she still has a few on the tree yet.  Papa is setting posts today.  Jac. Helfrich & his wife where injured in an automobile accident in Belleville the other day.  Mr. Laut & Stuart where talking to Papa in the field this afternoon, Mr. Hill & Meng also.  Mr. Klinkhardt from St. Louis is out visiting in Hecker by Mrs. Pour.  Mr. Hill & him & others where playing pinoche at Griffins this morning & this afternoon.  Her is leaving with bus this evening.

Friday, May 29, 1931

It rained a little this morn.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here this afternoon for lunch.  Lucinda Eichenseer brought us some flowers from Mamie this morn.  This afternoon there where some school kids here with cards, chances to win, bed spread, quilt, tea set, gas or coal range, & other articles, 10¢ a chance, we didn’t take any.  Rosalia & Aunt Mary where by Mrs. Rennecker a while.  Bertille & Rosalia went to church to-night & took that table scarf along & gave it to Mrs. Joe Braun.  Mrs. Rennecker birthday is today, Klotz’s & G. Wagners where there, they had ice cream.

Tuesday, May 12, 1931

They gave beautiful prizes, Bessie Parker got the silk pillow with a slip in candy, Clarance [Clarence] Wittenauer got a bottle perfume, & many others got prizes at the show.  We went tonight again they raffled 2 blankets, Levi Gregson, & Hilda Neff were the winners.  They also sold candy, & Erma Hepp got the silk spread, Nick Helfrich, the silk hose, & many others, Rosalia got a teaspoon.  They sure do draw the crowd, there play tonight was Kitty’s Statue.  They sold out on the candy, & there was a blanket left that no one called for, so he raffled that one & Eugene Bruns winner.  Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morning.  We washed, ironed, patched, baked bread today.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary come this afternoon to work at there place, they where here for lunch & supper, then they went us, to the show.  We were by Mrs. Rennecker & got some flowers.

Saturday, May 2, 1931

Papa got crushing done this morning.  Papa & Rosalia went too the truck patch & planted pickle seed.  Steve Rennecker was here this evening & got 2 settings of eggs for 12¢ a doz.  Papa & Rosalia went to Barthel & got oil changed in the Chev. 12908 miles.  Then we all went out to Henry’s stopped there a little they where going to Henry Birkners, then we went to see Uncle Adam & Emil Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went too.

Friday, May 1, 1931

Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morning.  This afternoon Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s to get a load of corn.  I seen in the paper that Ervin Boo was taken to the Hospital again in St. Louis for injuries due his right knee, while playing ball last summer.  Mr. Frank Scharfenberger was buried the past week, he was 70 yrs. old, & was a monument maker & business.  The Waterloo Milk Co. office was burglarized last Sunday $100 in cash was taken & $500 worth of checks where missing.  Louis Armstutz has purchased a new ford sedan, & made his first try out last Sunday.  Bill Horn from Columbia purchase the South Side Garage from Bill Haudrich, & he is working for Schrieber’s garage at Red Bud.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, they had lunch & supper here.  In the evening, we went to church, May Devotion.  Steve Rennecker was here & wanted eggs for setting but we didn’t have none.  Wilfred Eichenseer was just here this afternoon & got 2 settings, 30¢.  We got the chickens altogether now, so if they want them, that’s the only kind they can get.  Roy Staufenbiel was here this eve.- he came to ask for information, Robert Laut wanted to buy his house there for $150.00 & live there until he had a place to put it on.  But I don’t think Roy will do that.  We planted out cabbage & tomatoes in our truck garden today.
