Rob. Mertz is going to put a new roof on the shed binder out at Henry’s today. Summer begins. They oiled to Hecker streets. Cleaned chick house. Henry & family came, kids stayed here had dinner, Bertille rode along with them to Belleville, shopping. We sure had a nice rain, rather windy. There was a man killed on the Columbia hardroad, in automobile accident. Mr. & Mrs. Omar Mertz of Red Bud have a baby boy born June 15. Mrs. Bertha Probst has returned home from the hospital. Miss Marjorie Rausch is in the hospital, was operated for appendix. Beautiful evening after the rain. Had first chicken & kraut slaw dinner.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up to work there garden’s, had dinner & lunch here. Hugo Probst brought the chev. back, all repaired, new Con. [connector] Rod – charged $5.40, labor was $2.00, all included. Confirmation at Evansville today; seen the Bishop pass. Mrs. Wm Probst was operated for gall at Belleville Hospital.

Christ Buehler’s stopped in yesterday & brought Rose’veil back again, Irene used it. We washed, ironed, & awful hot again today. Hugo Probst got our car took it to his garage, to fix up. Henry Birkner’s birthday. Mrs. Karl Boll’s Henry came to cut hay this afternoon, didn’t cut much, it rained, he had lunch here. It rained way more in Athens & around then it did here. Eggs 11¢. Cowboy Jack gave a dance in Kammler’s Hall last nite. 3 couples there, gave it up & went back to St. Louis again, we heard, never will come out to Hecker to give a dance again.

Papa got crushing done. We went to Belleville this afternoon, got white shoes; coming home by Lipperts our car started in to knock, connecting rod burned out I guess. Hugo Probst pulled us home, to the shed, he is going to get the car Mon. & repair it. Leona brought the boy’s up to stay with papa, we went along with them to Donahue’s free anniversary dance, Keohler’s Orchestra, large crowd, Oak Grove wasn’t much, few cars, popeye didn’t come, they said, Blossom City Boys played. It rained a little & wind. In north St. Louis, it stormed, 7,000 bales cotton was destroyed through fire. In Minnesota, were it was so dry, they had snow several inches.

Rain this morning, just what we need; a all day rain. Jonny Reheis was here on business this afternoon. Papa took eggs up; got 12¢. August Mueth of Mascoutha [sic] was taken to Hospital at Belleville, but is now removed home again, he has his hip injured, was pinned between a car & shoe store over there, the paper says. Some of the ladies in town are helping to quilt by Mrs. Hugo Probst, on a quilt, was is to be raffled at the Firemen’s dance on May 19 in Kammlers Hall. Mrs. Wm. Fritsche donated it.

Papa & Rosalia went in the woods; this morn. Ed. Neff has sold his tools to Hugo Probst who is going to start up a garage, Neff quit, he has chicken pox now. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening & we went to Burksville to Dugan’s Hall, Tiptown congregation was going to give a euchre & dance there, but orders came from the bishop to have it at Tiptown, so they had to take tables all out & take them there, this afternoon first. So we went back home again, looked to much like rain to drive there, went by Waterloo home stopped at Rexs got ice cream, then went home. Some Euchre, Oh. Boy!

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner, lunch. It is rather warm again today. We went early to church, had a blow out coming home close to Chas Helfrichs, changed tires & came on. Fred Papenberg got a new chev & Oscar Birkners a used Ford, all close cars. There must be some thieves around Hecker, Hugo Probst got $10 stolen, Wagners got all the ripe & green plums stolen. Lester Gregson moved from the Gambach place to his own that he bought on East Main St. & Mr. & Mrs. Willie Gregson moved in Gambach property. We had our first roasting ears corn for dinner. The pallbearers from Aunt Lizzie where, Emil Brand, Ben Schilling, Hy Eichelman, Edwin & Willie Reheis, Fred Wiegand. The Heyl’s relatives have basket pinic [sic] at the Round Prairie Park, in honor of Mrs. Kessler from Alba. The threshing crew of Oscar Klotz’s have chicken bouilion, at Sam Krehers woods. It is in the paper that Lavern Koerber 23 & Irene Neff 21 where married at Red Bud by Rev. Stern in Catholic parsonage, Mary Havey & Paul Neff where attendats; last Wed. Roller skates & bicycle riding is the latest in Hecker at present. Mr. Rettinhouse is very bad expecting to live only couple days. We have 2 qts tomatoes canned so far, Mrs. John Reheis has 28 qts. & ain’t near finished yet.

Rosalia & Bertille went out to Henry’s washed, ironed; had lunch & dinner. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here. Mr. Papenberg fell from a horse, & brusied [sic] himself pretty bad; yesterday. The Wedding dance last nite brought out an awful crowd; she received so many presents, it lasted till 2 ‘o clock; the table was set for supper after 11 in the basement, there the drinks was also had, her slipper was sold by J. Cortner brought $14. Hugo got it.

We canned 4 pint peas yesterday, & having beans for dinner today. George Wagner finished up this morn. he had lunch & dinner here. Papa paid him 50¢ half day. We washed the Whippet & then drove out through the country towards evening to Nowland on Gundlach Place. Hugo Probst & Wilma Reheis are being married at 2 o clock at Smithon [sic] parsonage, she is to have white dress & wreath, & the bridemaid [sic] Irene Reheis will wear blue, Robert & Hugo wear businis [sic] suits, we had no invitiation, to the wedding dance at Daab’s Club House, so we didn’t go. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here before they went; but we where gone. Rheinhardt was to furnished music for the dance. Henry & family where up this evening.

We are baking bread, cleaning for tomorrow is a holiday. Henry is 29 yrs. old. & also 5 wedding anniversary. We been planting corn, water mellons [sic], pumpkins. It rained last night & this morning heavy. We went to Waterloo, to church, got our battery from Horns took the other one down to Bill’s, but nobody at home there. We planted out 100 sweet potatoe [sic] plants for 25¢, got them at Connor’s; we didn’t get to the birthday the roads are to bad. Miss Irene Reheis delightfully entertained at surprize misscellaneous [sic] Shower in honor of bride-to-be, Wilma Reheis & Hugo Probst to be married June 7th; singing & dancing were the featured diversions of the evening; the bride to be received many beautiful gifts, the attendants at the wedding will be Miss Irene Reheis, & a cousin & Robert Probst brother to groom.
