Rose finished my dress, started hers. We had chicken soup dinner. Mr. William Rankin & painter of Waterloo, gave us a call. We went to Mr. John Dehn’s funeral at Red Bud this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went down too; we didn’t go out to the cemetery, it got so late, till church was over; an awful large funeral; nice flowers.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile had lunch. Barry May has shooting match this afternoon. The Hecker Baseball team has a dance at Manier’s tonite, Jolly Six Osc. of Red Bud, pretty fair crowd attended. We stayed home all day; had beef soup dinner. Mr. Joe Hilpert & family stopped a little while, he bought 2 doz. eggs; they were down at Sparta, he helped to build the CCC camps there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, too take in Maniers dance; outside. Papa & Uncle Fred went out to Henry’s. Pete Birkner looked at the house, he said he would furnish everything & plastered it for $30.00, papa thought that was rather much, so he won’t let him fix it. We went to Oak Grove to a dance, musci [sic] by Chris Dorn’s Orc. Adm. 25¢; nice crowd & good time. James McCaffery 68 of Red Bud died, funeral tomorrow, 9 o’clock by Rev. Stern. Mr. Emil Frick brother of Mrs. Willie Gregson died, will be buried tomorrow afternoon at St. Louis.

We washed, nice cool. Ronnenberg’s moving today. Mrs. Jake Staufenbiel nee Prediger of St. Louis died Fri. night, funeral Tues. morning. We all put in a free guess to how many strokes it would take to bust an inner tube yesterday. Berti guessed 1400. Henry came & papa went along, looking at horses. Wm. Probst, Nic Schaefer, at Ames, & etc., he had lunch here. Rose finished my dress today. The directors & Henry are to meet at the Blackburn’s school tonite- see about school.

Rosalia & Bertille went to Red Bud, took pillow case along for the pinic [sic] Tues. evening. Fr. Stern is sick in Hospital in St. Louis, got over heated last week, different priest said mass. Floyd Mertz 21 yrs. old of Red Bud, was operated on for appendix, on the 18th, sick 10 day’s & died Fri. 6:20 in the morning; funeral tomorrow morning 9:30 to Catholic Church & cemetery there. His brother is a priest at Teuteopolis Fr. Fiorman, his sister also lives there. John Braun stopped in to get saks, he is hulling our clover seed off. We went to Smithon [sic] Homecoming seen the parade, 6 o’clock, not very much; stayed awhile in evening; awful dusty & crowd there.

It rained this morning. Meng’s couldn’t thresh, till this afternoon. We baked bread etc. Papa took the Whip to Probsts to get it fixed. The Waterloo paper has that Albert Niebruegge residing 7 miles from Valmeyer, was instantly killed when struck by lightining [sic], last Sat. at 5:30 & also rendered his farm hand unconscious for some time. He was carrying a hoe at the time & had just passed beneath a tree. George Hoffmann, who resides 3 miles east of Waterloo died last Wed. night, aged 61 yrs. illness of 2 weeks. Mrs. Richard Butler (nee Curran) of Burksville passed away last Thurs. June 28, after a long illness, aged 64 yrs; was buried at Waterloo, also funeral with Father Kuhl’s, Nonaghan & Traynor Eschmann, were Deacon & sub deacons; she leaves 7 children & husband Richard at home, & James, & Mrs. Ray Schmidt of Waterloo.

Mrs. Geo. Kuhn Jr. returned from the hospital with the little boy which was born Apr. 29; they have 2, girl & boy. she was Miss Emily Wiegand. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, we all had lunch together here. Uncle got each 1 box ice cream from Griffins, Oh! Boy was it good. We went out there this evening after the ladder & bucks. Miss Marie Harbaugh, daughter of Wm. Harbaugh of Waterloo became the bride of Mr. Herman Miller, son of Frank Miller, last Sat. May 5 in Catholic Church by Rev. Elmer Schumacher, cousin of the bride at 8 o’clock mass. The bride was attendanted [sic] by 2 sister Irene & Rose, wearing canary & blue silk next, blue hat & carried roses; while Rose wore pink silk net & pink hat, also carried roses. The groomsmen were 2 brothers, Ray & Robert Miller, attired in Oxford Gray. The bride had white satin. In the afternoon the Bridal party left for St. Louis to visit Sister Ann William, so she could see her sisters in wedding attire. The bride is a musci [sic] teacher in piano. He is employed by Quick Meal Stove Co. Mr. John Fisher the heater & plumber business of Waterloo died May 7, 59 yrs. buried Thurs. afternoon. The picture of Mr. & Mrs. James Parker is in today’ Belleville paper, he will be 85 yrs in Sept.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary called from church. We all went there for dinner & supper. It rained this morning early; then turned out to be a nice day. Nic Loehr was here & also at Henry’s but found no one at home, he wants to buy a horse. We got another business letter from Aug. Hempe. Tonight the St. John’s Church at Red Bud, given by the Dramtic [sic] Club, will give a play; 3 acts entitled “Spooky Tavern;” we went to see it, awful good, the hall was crowded, not enough seats. Songs & Au Buchon’s Band; kids tap dancing between acts. Good many people from Hecker, was down. Mr. & Mrs. Ben Heyl stop on there way home from Berkel’s funeral, at Smithon [sic], he wants to buy small pigs.

Raining all morning. Confirmation at Paderborn. Mrs. Steiger’s funeral at “Lords Corner.” 99 yr. old lady; she has grandchildren & great & great great grandchildren, she was making her home, with her daughter Mrs. Aug. Voges. Mr. Weigand is now home from the hospital. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Papenberg left by train yesterday morn. to Iowa, to attend the funeral of her brother; who was killed in a accident, they received telegram. No company today rain.

Mr. Ziebold, retired miller was buried at Waterloo yesterday, awful large funeral, business places were all closed. Papa hauled posts, helped Henry this afternoon to cut some logs & haul. Cleveland helped too. Berti washed Chev. Seeley worked in garden. Our baby chicks didn’t come yet. Mr. Walter Lehr brought them this evening 209 chicks @ 7½. $15.50, all. The new Hospital in Chester which has been remodeled will now be called Riverview Hospital. Mr. Martin May has sold property to Charles & Anna Hasnedle – twp. 4-9-$1500.00. The primary election turned out with the winners Chas. Wehmeier. Dem. Co. Judge & Reb. Judge Scheinder; For Sup. of Schools; Zimmer had 26 votes & Wm. Weigand received 1 vote but wasn’t running; several others ran for Supt. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Gruber of Waterloo moved to the farm of Mrs. All. Gregson. Cyrus Hill & family moved to Waynesville Mo. where he has gained a position. Mrs. Steiger, Lena Birkners great grandma died this eve. about 6 o clock, will be buried Sun. afternoon 1 o clock at “Lords Corner;” she would of been 100 yrs. old in May, she was blind & couldn’t hear for a good while.

Aunt Lizzie’s birthday, 59 yrs. she would be. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped a while before church. Christ Kerns second daughter was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in E. St. Louis to be operated on appendix, but it must have bursted before they could do anything. Miss Ruth Roscow has lost her mind, she stays by Austin McDermott at present, took a walk the other night, all nite, next morning found her by Nic Mueths with McDermott’s dog in the yard; she may be taken to Alton. It rained this morning a good shower. Henry & family, Mrs. Cleveland, & Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here for supper after the funeral. Papa took care of the kids, the rest of us went. It surely was a large funeral people from all over, nice day, the church was packed, standing in the back & vestibule, largest ever held in Hecker. Fr. Aydt made a nice sermon. Willie he had to go out of church.
