Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, he cleaned his cistern, took all the dirt out; then went back home. The Y.P.L. are giving a play entiled [sic] “Here Comes Charlie,” & a dance after it musci [sic] by Holloywood Harmonists tonite in Kammler’s Hall; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we all went, it surely was good; the players were, Flossie Kammler, Clifford Stalhleber, Clara Hofmeister, Clarence Rausch, Ralph Rausch, Viola Weigand, Henry Spalt, Alsace Eckert, Alma Hepp, Lyle Rausch, & between acts was songs by Marjorie Emig, & acrobatics tap dancing by Louise Wilhelm both of Belleville. A large crowd, hall filled.

Papa & Rosalia went in the woods again this morn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up to pay tax; were here for dinner & supper. Papa & Uncle Fred went up to the woods this afternoon with the mule & Henry’s mare, worked fine. Aunt Mary went up to see Louise Birkner awhile, she is worse again, they quit Dr. Eckert now & Pautler from Red Bud. Louie was there today. It was in the Bellville [sic] paper tonite, that suit to foreclose a $4100 mortgage on real estate in East St. Louis was filed in court by Peter Reheis against Louisa Fritsche & Joe Herzog.

Rose & Bert went up to mass, funeral of Mr. Berg. Koch undertaker. It wasn’t so very large, few neighbors, & relatives. Pallbearears [sic] were Willie Ganley & Reagen, Huber McDermott, Tom Havey, Abrose Doyle, Joe Kunkel. Fr. made a very nice sermon, the body was viewed in back church. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon & we all went to Belleville to Mr. John Birkner’s funeral, Uncles step brother, at the home of John Breutigam’s, & the most beautiful flowers & so many, they had. Gardener had charge, & Rev. Pessel, the service, nephews pallbearers, Armstuz’s, Birkners & Hepp’s; It was pretty large. Cold & snowing this afternoon. Rosalia took Aunt Mary over to Mrs. Staufenbeils try her dress, see if he fits all right. Eggs 14¢ Mertz’s. Rose Pour & Mamie came after we were in bed, Mrs. Pour wanted hatching eggs, but we haven’t none this year, no roosters. Adam Eckert has chicken pox; has pretty much fever.

Papa went out to haul logs; work in the woods. Aunt Mary & Josie came here for dinner. Josie went home about 2 o clock, took Mrs. Eckert along & 20 doz. eggs from here. Papa couldn’t get the car started in the woods, he called up, Josie & Rose went out & got him & took him back again. Wuertz Bros. was here & Uncle Fred came up to get Aunt Mary this evening; there was church, but she didn’t go. Ed. Pabst came. It is colder again, we started furnace fire.
Friday, Jan. 26, 1934
Pap went to Hecker. Vic Eichenseer came & fixed our pump at the straw shed. the E. W. A. roadworkers started again today, only work 15 hrs. week. Seven were fired, & 4 new ones put on, they are Chas. Helfrich, Hy. Brown, Philip Jatho, Osie Neff put on, & those fired, where Robert Laut, Hecker & 2 guys from Waterloo. Meyer’s, Hy. Emery, Bill Sensel. Rosalia went after the mail. Pierre Laut was here yesterday evening, said we could come & help quilt this afternoon; Rosalia went; Mrs. Rennecker, Mrs. George Kammler were the quilters for today. It is sun burst quilt they had lunch. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up awhile this afternoon. We had cooked cheese from Mertz store, lb. Adam Eckert’s butter; all was good. This evening we went out to Uncle Freds, Aunt Mary’s 57 birthday, cake & orangeade was served to the following: Mrs. Oscar Birkners family, Frank Birkner’s family, Christ Buehler’s family, Wm. Birkner’s family, Miss Josie Keller, Pinochle & lotto was played by the kids, got prizes; Frieda got attendance prize again. Miss Josie spent the day by Lizzie Boll’s.

Papa got crushing done. Ben Schilling brought clover seed. Geodelle the bread man stops here now. We went to Bellville [sic] this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Josie were butchering by Adam Eckerts, stop in on there way home. This evening went out to Uncle Fred’s took them all along & went to Hy. Ronnenberg to Luella’s 18 yrs. old birthday, & what a time, musci [sic] was furnished by Birkner’s, & Evansville boy’s, Kaemper & Wunderlich, with guitar & violin. Beer, wine, root beer & chicken soup; it sure was good; Evansville people Jerry Kissel & his wife had a quarrel, & also his daughter & her husband, all were feeling good; lots to drink. We came home about 2:30 this morn.

Mrs. James Ganley is getting buried, be at Hecker 9 o clock, Catholic church. We went out to the house, Rosalia & Bertie prayed the rosary. The funeral was rather large, had nice bouquet of flowers. Nefphews [sic] acted as pall bearers; were, Willie & Philip Frend, Willie & Jonny Ganley, & Jimmie Brauch. Fr. H. H. Aydt had a very nice sermon. She was the first to be traveled on hard roads, first funeral & her sister Mrs. Brauch, she was the first one on hard road from Waterloo out to cemetery, the people had to walk out, couldn’t drive on it yet at that time. Mr. Jake Mauer of Red Bud age 72 died with a stroke last Mon. evening was buried Thurs. morn. at Red Bud. Uncle Fred is 59 yrs. old. We went out this evening, quite a crowd, Christ Buehler family, Henry Birkners family, Henry Brand family, Ignatz Neff & family, Adam Eckerts family, Willie Birkner’s family, Frank Birkner family, Oscar Birkners family. Cake, & lemonade where served. Pinochle & lotto were played; attendance prize was a plate, Mrs. Christ Buehler, received it, prizes were given to the highest lotto players; crowd left 11 o clock.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped in, then went to Adam Eckerts brought them damson plums. Mr. Weber called in. Miss Ida Braun died this morn. little after 9 o clock, she had been ailing for 5 mons. with kidney trouble & brides diesease [sic – probably brights disease].

We cut corn this morn. We finished digging potatoes. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, he went to the signing of wheat acreages in the school hall, for S.t Clair Co. members. Report is out that the sheriff was called out to Hecker, by Jack Reagan, on account the fight with his boy & little Dr. Eckert, Alfred nearly choked him. Stores are closed to.

It rained heavy last nite. Henry came up with load hogs, 8 pigs, papa went along over to E. St. Louis market, with him, the government bought today, over 80,000 there when they left, the yard. Henry had dinner here. Mr. H. M. Hill was here taking items. Mrs. Stauenfbiel was here on business, Celestine Neff came down to get here. Mr. & Mrs. Henry Meng celebrated there golden Wedding Anniv. yesterday also, two neighbors, Meng & Hill celebrated same day; Meng had eight of beer, & Hill a keg beer. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up had supper here, they sold some damson plums in town; she went to Dr. Eckerts, got something for her mouth; she brought peaches, got 2 qts.
