Papa & Rose put roofing on the barn, nice cool this morn. Pierre Laut is sick, tonsil’s, has 104 fever. A man here wanted to see Uncle Fred, wanted a drill; but it is already sold. Peaches at Waterloo are selling at $1.65 -75 a bu. by Al. Heyl’s; all $2. & 35 around here. Mr. James Crowe son of the late police men[,] James Crowe, was married Tues. morning to Miss Flora Wielbacher of Columbia, & at that parish, he was formerly of Waterloo, but now of Columbia were he is employed as mechanic there in garage. The New Athens & Hecker hard road route, 156 is now opened. Miss Mildred Rist 15 yr. old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joh Rist was operated for appendix; last Friday in Red Bud Hospital. Miss Elva Knapp, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Knapp was honored with a shower, given by & Misses Edna & Lavina Geodelle, she will become the bride to Mr. Harold Kloft of East St. Louis, the marriage to take place early in Sept. Last Mon. morning Bill Donahue of Midway Inn on Route 3, was awakened by a barking dog, on investigating found that his 25 half grown turkeys had disappeared, from there roosting place, he found 19 doped [sic – dropped] in a cornfield nearby.

Saturday, March 3, 1934

Papa got haircut. We went to Waterloo this afternoon; special sale at Mudds City Grocery, sugar for 48¢ etc; sign your name on a card to win 1 bu. basket groceries; to be raffled this evening; we have our names in. There was two funeral this afternoon in town, McDonald, to Catholic Cemetery; & Max Schlich, Evangaciol [sic] church & cemetery. Robert got 3 teeth pulled by Dr. Hotz, today. The state men are testing the hard road out west, now. Mr. Ed. Meng had a light stroke this morning, they called for Mr. Rennecker, & the doctor, he couldn’t talk Lena said, but he can open his mouth now.

Friday, Jan. 26, 1934

Pap went to Hecker. Vic Eichenseer came & fixed our pump at the straw shed. the E. W. A. roadworkers started again today, only work 15 hrs. week. Seven were fired, & 4 new ones put on, they are Chas. Helfrich, Hy. Brown, Philip Jatho, Osie Neff put on, & those fired, where Robert Laut, Hecker & 2 guys from Waterloo. Meyer’s, Hy. Emery, Bill Sensel. Rosalia went after the mail. Pierre Laut was here yesterday evening, said we could come & help quilt this afternoon; Rosalia went; Mrs. Rennecker, Mrs. George Kammler were the quilters for today. It is sun burst quilt they had lunch. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up awhile this afternoon. We had cooked cheese from Mertz store, lb. Adam Eckert’s butter; all was good. This evening we went out to Uncle Freds, Aunt Mary’s 57 birthday, cake & orangeade was served to the following: Mrs. Oscar Birkners family, Frank Birkner’s family, Christ Buehler’s family, Wm. Birkner’s family, Miss Josie Keller, Pinochle & lotto was played by the kids, got prizes; Frieda got attendance prize again. Miss Josie spent the day by Lizzie Boll’s.

Sunday, Dec. 3, 1933

Went to Waterloo to mass, cause making hard road to Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner here, then went home, Armstutzs came out there. Today Advent starts. Mr. Jake Merlhmans birthday today. Gus Millman is visiting his sister Mrs. Wm. Kelley of Ruma who is ill.

Saturday, Nov. 4, 1933

Henry & Leona went to Waterloo this away around, left 3 kids here today for dinner. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Bertille went to Waterloo to Mrs. C. Wischmeyer sale, not much to it, came home on the new, hard road all the way, sure goes nice. Jack Ganley, Pete Reheis were stuck along the hard road. We baked cakes.

Tuesday, Oct. 31, 1933

Hallowen [sic]. Fr. Aydt had asked all the men of the congregation to come to his place last night, they would miss something if they wouldn’t come; it was for the men only, no women. There is going to be a lotto game on Nov. 8 there, lucheon [sic] set, attendance prize, cake walk, after the games. Adm. 25¢. The had road is finished now from Hecker to Waterloo, but not to drive on all the way yet, from Hecker as far as Henry’s, they go over the new bridge, Henry & family where at Aunt Mary’s tonite.

Sunday, Oct. 29, 1933

Uncle Fred, & Aunt Mary where up for dinner, then we went riding to see if we could get corn, went to Adam Eckerts he wants 50¢ bu; Herzog on Fritsche’s place, she won’t sale none they say, has over 1000 bus, & won’t sell; to Papenberg’s, nobody home, went to Henry talked awhile there, hard road opened that far, went to Barthels place, then past Joe Gregson’s home, also pass Voges, Brauns, then home, still didn’t buy no corn. We went out to Uncle Fred’s this evening, Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Birkner & family, Christ Buehler’s family, Frank Birkners family, Hy. Spalt; were there, the ladies had 6 hand pinochle game Mrs. Oscar Birkner has 1500 trump; the men had social conversation.

Sunday, Oct. 15, 1933

Went out to Uncle Freds had dinner there, then left the car stand by church lanes & walked down the hard road to where they are working by Cleveland’s House, we walked up to Henry’s but no one home there, so went back home again, it started in raining. Harry Kammler has a dance tonite musci [sic] furnished by Mac Ocr. [sic] of Red Bud. Ed Neff traded his old car in for a new one, also Joe Wacthel, R. Stauenfbiel. Ed is building a new garage, wrecked his old one, & putting it up modern. Mr. Peter Reheis got the place from Ralph Collier, known as Whiteside farm, sold on forclosure [sic] sale $7500.00. Mrs. Collier & children are in St. Louis. Mr. Jo. Neff 45 yrs. passed away was buried Fri., sick 2 days in hospital. Mrs. Joe Schilling brother, Smithon [sic] Church, Green Mount Cemetery. Mrs. Neff 86 yrs, his mother lives in Old Folds [sic – Folks] Home, Belleville; he married Lavin Buehler, and have 3 children, all living on farm near Smithon [sic].

Thursday, Oct. 5, 1933

We picked 1 ½ bu. tomatoes, Henry & Albert Cleveland, came up got them this evening, he got his molasses, we took a sample of it. They finished slabbing this morn in town, there out at Geodell’s now. We dug all of our sweet potatoes out. Papa went out to see Roy Stauenfbiel.

Wednesday, Oct. 4, 1933

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up, they watched road gang, & got 1 gal. foam from factory, gave us glass full. We went to Donahue’s Inn, free grand opening dance, & Boy was it grand; & crowded ; 7 piece orch. Red Bud. Schmidt, Cowell, Miss Parkinson; all kinds instruments. Eggs 17¢ today.
