Sunday, Sept. 12, 1937

Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile, had pumpkin pie. We went to Orlets this afternoon, went to New Hanover looked at pig self feeder at Geo. Lehr’s, pap bought one $17.00 delivered; we had supper by them. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to Totsch’s paderborn free dance & fish fry. music by Jake Schoenborn, Clemence Rheinhardt & Ray Geodelle & Gerhardt, Skaer’s are out, had fallen out last nite at Floraville, on account of the trial that Schoenbrook Bill Rehling had, Skaers held up for Rehling had a big crowd there. Hecker also had baseball dance, not so hot Schmidt played; not many people there, some left & came up there.

Saturday, Sept. 11, 1937

Went to Belleville dentist. Bert [Bertille] got new black dress $1.99 they have street fair there yesterday & today, square is all decorated Ferris wheel, merry go around dance floor etc. Pap went to Bozzays. Sure cool nights. Maniers have fish fry tonite also dance at Floraville. Oliver Kammler & Lulu Ackerman were married at Louisville Ky. last Tues; are now making there home with J. Kammler’s his parents; he is employed now as hucstere [unsure – could be huckster] around town. Rob & Olive Laut are digging potatoes today here. Mrs. Jake Orlet is improving; she was very ill, the appendix was already broken when they operated; last mon. morning. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] were in to see here Wed. but not long no visitors allowed.

Friday, Sept. 10, 1937

Cut in cabbage 13 qts; got pumpkins & watermelons in. Baked bread & coffee cake. Hy. Kessler wanted hogs, ours were sold. Pap went out & found 7 pigs from Bozzay $6.75. then took them to Hy. Kesslers sold them to him; he was well satisfied with them. Harbaugh Moorman’s Mineral Feed man was here; asking pap to be agent in Prairie du Long Township, he is promoted to higher degree. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came, we ate watermelons.

Thursday, Sept. 9, 1937

Cooking catsup, canned tomatoes. made preserve baked cookies etc. Pap went to see Hy Henze. H. Brinkmann & wife were here looked at pigs yesterday eve. bought 4 – $7. a piece going to get them this eve. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. Berneice came got 4 doz. eggs take them along to Floraville for Mehrmann. Orvile Schmidt is working in Mertz store now; Hy. cooking sorghum. Oliver & Wilma Birkner had there tonsils taking out at Belleville.

Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1937

Washed, ironed, canned peaches. A man here collecting for poor people. Mr. James Tobin & Leona Vogt getting married this morn. at Red Bud 8:30 high mass; dance at Oak Grove tonite, only daughter of Bill Vogt. South of Red Bud. Catholics here have card & lawn party tonite at School grounds. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came, we all went to social, didn’t win nothing; Uncle had 7 got dresser scarf; played 12 games & couple games of each bingo, had cake walk, 15 cakes @ $1.25. Uncle Fred had to play accordion for cake walk; not much of crowd about 8 tables euchre, 1 pinochle, 1 solo. Mrs. Emmet Cowell while on her way to attend the wedding Mass this morn. was struck by auto. Leifer of south Red Bud, she also had with her a girl, who was also hit, had few teeth knocked out, & Mrs. has leg broken, side all bruised, were car had drug her about 30 ft. they say; is in Red Bud hospital, hurt pretty bad.

Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1937

Catholic Schools open today. Canning peaches cooking catsup, etc. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed for supper last nite, then we all went to Smithton to Catholic Church pinic [sic]. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came Bert [Bertille] went along to Floraville dance, Viola Kaburcek birthday all free. Skaers Orch; nice crowd present. Hy Miller of Lords Corner is being buried at Stehfests cemetery this afternoon, Elsie Spalts husband 41 yrs. old had cancer nothing left to him, didn’t weigh 100 lbs. they said. Pap was at the cemetery; he belonged to Broad Hollow Grange & was a soldier, so they all had there ceremonies at cemetery; awful large funeral. Henry brought load of corn on frame wagon Billy [Willis] also. Levi Feurer stopped in looked at pigs. We went to. Ignatz Neffs got bottles & cans & bought 2 doz. jars 20¢. went to Leo’s got some grapes for wine, took peaches along & peeled & canned 4 qts.

Monday, Sept. 6, 1937

Canned peaches 7 qts. & 1 tomatoes. Pap went to Wittenauers got pigs. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came went along with us to Red Bud Firemen’s pinic [sic], for parade, had $5 attendance prize drawing every hr. Ray Wittenauers machine burned up, 1 mi west of Red Bud coming home from Oak Grove last nite; Irene Buehler, was driving & Ray & H. Wittenauer’s daughter was along, driving to fast, tire blew out, ran up bank & upset & caught fire; they were lucky to get out & not injured; only Irene’s lips & Wittenauer girls dress scorched & Ray hat burned; all feeling pretty good at the dance, Radio Stars Roy Queen & his gang played for the dance. Buehler told us today.

Sunday, Sept. 5, 1937

Went to mass. Collection for high school fund today. Went to Waterloo homecoming seen parade; pinic [sic] in new city park no shade trees there so hot; free dancing in afternoon, music by Dream Time Trio; had amateur hr; concert by Collinsville Drum Corps & also Waterloo band; so cool this eve. Bert [Bertille] came home with Leo & Rose, stayed awhile in eve; came home 10 o clock.

Saturday, Sept. 4, 1937

Rose 26 birthday. Pap went to Waterloo this afternoon, then to W. Wittenauer’s bought 4 pigs $20.00. Rained this morn & afternoon. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came. Bert [Bertille] went along to Milsdadt [sic – Millstadt] homecoming seen parade, beautiful. Leo & Rose were there to. We took chances to win automobile, 10¢ & harness 5. such crowd.

Friday, Sept. 3, 1937

Canned peaches, cooked catsup & preserve. Pap went to Waterloo got crushing done. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this afternoon; they were also up yesterday. Emil also he is going to to rent there place across the street for the winter months.
