We washed, ironed, scrubbed basement, this morn. Papa & Rosalia went to Waterloo took load wheat along & eggs are 9¢, wheat 48¢. Bertille stayed at Henry’s, made a little garden, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where there too, they brought seed potatoes up. Robert was in bed, had a few pimples, thought it might be measles. Wilma Reheis has them. Papa took chickens to the store 54 lbs. 8¢ lb. & had to pay tax on the things what he bought. It is terrible windy this afternoon.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped a little while then went home. We were at home all day & nite, no company. Papa went up town awhile, they told him there that Hy. Emery upset his machine at Tom Crowe’s lane, on the piece of levee there, the windshield was broken 6 pieces, & that if help wouldn’t come just then he would have drowned there, Alois Havey came along there. Mrs. Xavier Bievenue nee Harschmann died this morn, at Red Bud hospital, they took here there Sat. afternoon & today she died, funeral will be Tues. morn, 9 o clock to Catholic church & cemetery at Red Bud. Mrs. Chas. Helfrich has the measles, had the doctor last nite. Mr. Mauer is bad sick.

We planted 4 bus. potatoes this morning. We all went out to Henry’s took the mule along out. Papa & Rosalia took some wheat along into Waterloo. Mr. & Mrs. Rudy Geodelle & Mrs. Fritz & Hilda came out there too. Bill was working there yesterday & today, sewing oats & today is was to wet, so they shocked corn. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up & her & Rosalia & Bertille went along to church in Hecker & took the pattern along for Levi Gregson’s. Joe & Josie are both in bed, sick with flu.
Monday, Jan. 30, 1933
We washed, ironed. Beautiful day like spring. Papa went up in the woods, this afternoon. Louis Dehn is butchering his hog here at Renneckers 600 lbs. Robert Laut is also, he got 2 hogs from Christ Buehlers. Edwin Reheis had there little baby bay christened the other Sun at Smithon [sic] by Rev. Hosto, called it Emil Fred, was sponsor. Papa brought 1 gal. milk along for the pigs. We went out to Henry’s this evening. Papa & Henry went up to Joe Mueths, this 12 o’clock, he is pretty bad, the doctor gives him up, he breathes so loud, & some times not at all, girls are all at home.

Rosalia & Bertille went to church, Papa wasn’t feeling very good so he stayed at home. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came over little while before dinner, they had there dinner along across the street. Ted Wuertz was here & told papa that our hog had bad teeth, that is why she don’t eat. Uncle Joe Mueth was here on business on telephone. Mr. Mueth is awful sick, they had the preist [sic] & doctor out, he don’t know any body, & weak; had a light stroke in his legs. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came over again this afternoon she went to church service & we played cards, papa had 1500 trump in diamonds, they where here for supper. Henry & family where also here for supper, they brought 1 gal. milk along for our pigs. Henry took Robert to Doctor Eckerts & wanted to get his tooth pulled, but doc ain’t at home. Fr. Adyt appointed 8 men on comittee [sic] this morning for a meeting after church this afternoon to straighten things out; about Frank Scheinwender taking lumber away & loading up fence roofing, doors, etc. but was stopped by Ed. Parker, Phil Braun, Griffin, Roy Stauenfbiel.

Papa got crushing done this morning. Geo. Boll was here to sell saussage [sic], we didn’t take nothing. Papa talked with Phil Wuertz, he went past with 3 wheel wagon, broke one wheel of [sic]. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henrys, to get some milk, they took one little pig along out for the boys to take cake of. We have to feed the other two here, in a box by the chicken house, the old sow is sick won’t eat nothing. Line 18 & 7 are tangled together today, & lines 12 & 2 are going to have meeting at the school house to nite. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for supper, they came here from Christ Buehler’s, he is pretty sick, they way they said, so pale.

We were all out at Henry butchering had lunch & dinner. they made 57 summer sasauge [sic]. Mrs. Meuth is awful bad sick in St. Louis, MO. We had awr [sic] eggs at Renneckers today and peddler paid 17¢. [ed. note: entry completely in a different handwriting than Bertille’s. Most likely is Rosalia writing].

We fried down bacon, sugar cured meat. Steve Rennecker came over & collected his telephone dues, $1.50 including drop tax. Steve cut all of his trees down in front of his house. George Wagner hauled them away for firewood. Papa went over awhile. George & Joe Wactel was also there. The Democrat man from Belleville called out to Hills to get some information to put in the paper today on Hecker Default State Bank, about the wreath that has been placed there; in front of the bank door. Mrs. Hill ordered some cottage cheese from Ben Heyl’s they sell it 15¢ pint. Mrs. George Wagner put a quilt in the frame this morning, Mrs. Rennecker helped, Mrs. Watchel also helped to quilt on it this evening. Jerome Cortner was to see Uncle Fred’s but they wasn’t up here, they where at Chris Buehler’s, who is pretty sick, he didn’t come over here. Wagner told him that they wasn’t up today.

We went to Red Bud. Fr. Stern read of the annual report this morn. They now have service & instruction on Sun. afternoons. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here awhile. Ex president Calvin Coolige [sic – Coolidge] died Thurs. Jan. 5; heart stroke. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to see Mr. & Mrs. Louis Birkner, she is better now, she had a stroke awhile back; heart stopped beating on the way over to Kern’s, & she fell on the ground. Emerys found her took her to there house till the doctor come. Mamie & Clarence came down this evening, played dominoes.
