Rained nearly all day. Chas Helfrich got load hay. Bill [Klein] came this afternoon. Bert [Bertille] went along to Belleville. & this eve. went to Marita’s 1 yr. birthday, nobody else there raining & roads pretty muddy; we planted out tomatoes & sweet potatoe [sic] plants this eve. Cleaned little chick house this morn.

Sunday, May 7, 1939

Went to Red Bud mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile. Conner of Paderborn was here wants an old horse. Miss Reickert of Waterloo came, Bert [Bertille] went along showed her where Uncle Freds live; she bought the piece of furniture with drawers from them for $2.50 they paid 10 [cents] at Crook’s sale. Bill [Klein] came this afternoon. There was an accident by John Krehers, cars from Lebanon turned around & Geo. Parker & Muskoff driving Clarence Wittenauers car, smashed into them people from other car were taken to Belleville in Dashners ambulance, Parker & Muskoff never got hurt, but car was pulled to Red Bud to Schrieber’s for repairs; claim was the Lebanon car fault.

Thursday, May 4, 1939

Pap went to Waterloo, took wheat along; just 72 [cents]. Went to Kleins this afternoon, they brought 100 W. Wyandottes along from Illmo Hatchery $6.20; we got about 125 out of our hatch, of 240 eggs very poor. we got about 228 chicks now altogether with 10 hens. Oliver Birkner brought sack mash & coop to ship old hens 2 dozen. We painted kitchen floor green this eve.

Wednesday, May 3, 1939

Had beef soup dinner. Pap’s birthday 61 yrs. old. Clemens Schlotmann Sr. of Red Bud died will be buried Fri. morn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & pap went down to see him this afternoon, he just had a stroke 10 o’clock yesterday morn. 69 yrs. they went home & came back again for supper; Henry & family & Leo & family & Bill [Klein] were here this eve. Bert [Bertille] put a piece over radio, German Band for a whole set, birthday. Minnie Staufenbiel, was here wants to go along to funeral Fri. at Red Bud. Ralph Wiegand accessor came this eve.

Nice day, cool. Went to mass at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped awhile, Emil came to pay there then rent. Pap was invited out to Ganley’s to stag party; he didn’t go. Bill [Klein] came & Bert [Bertille] went to Scottfield, & places.

Thursday, April 27, 1939

Worked garden, planted house flowers of basement out; nice day gool. Mauff was here, we got oranges & bananas, cut lawn & trimmed it; washed woodwork on back porch, & put screens on, dining room window. Leo & family came brought gal cheese along. Bill [Klein] came also.

Monday, April 24, 1939

Washed, ironed, cleaned front room put up screens. Pap cut lawn. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, worked in garden. Paderborn school children have there play tonite. Bill [Klein] came & Leo & family, brought Marita here to stayed all nite, & rest of us went to play, sure was good; had dance after musci [sic] by Rheinhardts, Schoenborn band; had awful crowd.

Sunday, April 23, 1939

Went to Paderborn mass, went to Leo’s, had dinner & supper. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were there too all day. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to church this afternoon; at Paderborn. There was a bad accident by Log Cabin Frid. morn. early, 1 being killed James Moore & Ray Roscow & Seifert boy are in hospital, not in very good condition, Roscow is unconsicous [sic].

Wednesday, April 19, 1939

House Ins. agent was here. Pap went to Waterloo took 9 bus. wheat along @ 68 [cents]; got Berts [Bertille] shoes repaired. We went to Belleville this afternoon got wall paper for bedroom & kitchen 10 [cents] roll. Bill [Klein] came this eve. Went to Dr’s.

Sunday, April 16, 1939

Cloudy with showers. Went to mass. Children made there first Holy Communion; all dressed in white. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped in after mass awhile. Hubert McDermoot & Miss Schmidt were published for 2nd. time today. Mr. & Mrs. Lerow Haudrich are having there wedding dance at Totsch’s tonite, Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary got invitation card. The Happy Ramblers Orc. are playing & giving a dance at Kammlers tonite. Bill [Klein] came Bert [Bertille] went along to Dr. Eckerts, he wanted to pay him.
