Papa went to Jack Dugan’s & bought a sow for $25.00. got crushing done this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up, he went up to the woods & got load rock. Ed. Meng was over awhile. Henry was here & got block & taggle, to butchered a beef soon. Horn’s funeral & in Waterloo & Dehn at Red Bud this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening & Rose & Berti went along to Oak Grove, Adm. 10¢, he paid it, Blossom City Orch; not much to it; one at Burksville also; at Waterloo.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, she & Rose & Berti went to church funeral mass of Mrs. Griffin, we went up to see her last nite; looks natural & had the most beautiful flowers & so many room nearly filled; the church was crowded; Dashner Undertaker, four sons, Steve, Ed, Joe & Albert & Noel Roscow & Wm. Harbaugh were pallbearers; & Mr. Griffin, & Pearl, surviving; didn’t open it in church. Mr. Hill came got the telephone dues. Mr. Bill Lehr flus inspector was here, our chimney needs repairing. We went out helped Leona wash, took ours along to; finished it all up; cleaned kitchen. Eggs 25¢. Wm. Ganley came paid interest; stayed awhile.

We cleaned front & bedroom today, little cloudy & rainy. Schwarz from Mound Ill was here selling apples we took 2 bus. 75¢. winesaps Roman Beautys & 1 bu. twigs 65¢, half for Leona. Uncle Ret’s [?] birthday. Al Gauen came & got 2 hams 24½ lbs. 35¢ & ½ bu. sweet potatoes 50¢. Berti baked molasses cookies. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Belleville to Breautigams funeral from Gunlack chapel to cemetery. Papa used mullin leaves this evening for the first time.

Mr. Jim Parker is being buried this morning but none of us can go, we have to go to Henry’s threshing, oats; the grandsons were pallbearers; 3 of Geo Parker’s, & Paul & Clyde Pautler & Hy. Birkner; the daughter, Sister Amada was also home; came Thurs.; it was an awful large funeral. Henry had threshers for dinner & lunch, & supper; moved here about 4 o’clock. Klotz & Watchel machine threshed this & Geo. Schilling moved onto Blackburn’s. Henry threshed altogether 1108 bus; 394 bus. here & 714 out there, highest oats threshed so far; we got for our share 369 bus. Pabsts bought oats 47 bus.

We girls, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Leona & Billy went to church, Mrs. Eulers funeral, from Querheim Chapel at Waterloo to Hecker Church 9′ o clock; large funeral quite a few flowers. Just 18 yrs. mother dead. Henry & boys came up to make hay, had dinner. Emil came with the wagon this afternoon, & Pete Watchel helped yet, all had lunch here. It started in to rain, so they didn’t get finished with the hay. G. Wagner here a little while. Eggs 21¢ today. Rogation Day’s.

Ironed patched, cleaned little chick house. Rose went to Red Bud to Zipfel to get chick feed. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon, him & papa went to Waterloo on business; cut Rosalia’s dress out. Aunt Mary & Rose went over to Mrs. Staufenbiels to get patterns. Bertille got chain letter from Mrs. S. Heller St. Louis today & sent it on again. Mr. Jim Purtle, was buried at Red Bud church & cemetery this morn, from the home of his son George, aged 92 yrs. made his home with a daughter of St. Louis; was a very large funeral; Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had supper here, wanted to stay for church, but it started in to rain, they then went home.

Making a star quilt out of scraps; Mrs. Phillip Kahmer of Fords Corner is getting buried this afternoon. Pretty cold weather again. Leona said she planted out cabbage plants yesterday & not very nice today for them; We got out sweet potatoes in the hot bed. Miss Lizzie Boll was the lucky one to win the quilt that was raffled at the euchre Tues. night. Joe Griffin got attendance prize. Casper Horshmann living on Barney Kaiser’s farm is awful bad sick at present; We received a letter from Alice, says raining there, flower are blooming, everything looks so nice; we sent her a letter today. Eggs 18¢, we shipped 19 hens, 123 lbs. over to St. Louis with Mertz & got 16½¢ lb; they lost 1 lb. going over, some weighed 7½-9 lbs; surely were & nice fat. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came , we all went to McDermotts, to see Margaret, she sure was laid out nice, pink dress, had so many beautiful flowers & so many cards for masses to be read for her; quite a few people came to the house, it was packed. Mrs. McDermott isn’t so good. Gertie Irose is getting along fine, since she was operated. Margaret – she was so weak of blood, they even took Ruth’s blood, but it didn’t help, they checked, Hubert also, both listed good.

Henry, Leona & Billy [Willis] came up, they have corn & hog sign up meeting at the City Hall, Henry & papa went, this morning. They had dinner here; she brought a quilt along to mark off, ready to quilt next week. Mr. Ed Pabst was here to see dad. Papa went to Waterloo this afternoon. There were quite a few people in town today, for the signing of corn & hog contracts. We dyed some dresses, blue & pink. Mr. Herold Smithton saloon keeper died, will be buried Fri. morning. In Smithon [sic] news was the names of all people attending Mr. Helfrich’s funeral, about 700 people. The Red Bud depot was robbed register & $26; they didn’t find the guys so far. We went out to Al. Clevelands, to nite played 6 hand pinochle, had light lunch, sausage etc., listened to the radio.

Valentine Day. Nice day, but the roads, just terrible, almost impossible with the car. The funeral of Mrs. Klotz is to be held this afternoon, Wagner Undertaker, they brought her up to the church this morn, & services this afternoon, the road is to bad, for anyone to drive in there, so they will bring her to the church; she was 73 yrs. of age, her father still living; but can’t move about, is bed fast with rheumatism in his legs. Papa went to Baldwin to see a party there. We went out to Uncle Adam’s this evening, he is getting along pretty good again.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up early, & Rose went along, left 5:15 to Belleville to Route 15 to Mr. Vernon & then route 142 to Dalgreen, to attend the funeral of Mrs. Sam Schilling, got there at 9 o clock, had coffee; walked to the cemetery; too muddy to drive, came home at 4 o clock, shopped at Belleville first. Joe & George Schilling, Mrs. J. Kreher Sr. & Jr. & daughter, also all went down; it is 100 miles there; one way. There was a lady here, begging for help, clothes are [sic: or] food; we gave her liver sausage. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had supper here, stayed in Hecker all night; too muddy to go home. Mr. Robert Bersche infant baby of was buried Sun; she is Fern Gulley, that is the mother.
