We washed, ironed, scrubbed basement, had early dinner & drove to Columbia to see Mr. Kern, but he was at Chester we bought several articles at Weilbacher’s Store; & Wm. Vogts Store, nice places; stopped at Waterloo a little. Mr. Grob 44 yrs. old. Furniture Store man was buried at Columbia, died of pneoumia [sic – pneumonia]. There is a Socialist Meeting at Kirsch School House tonite. Mr. Cooper as speaker, sponsored by Wm Weigand Jr. as comittee [sic] man; refreshments will be served.

We were at Red Bud. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed awhile. The girl that Fr. Stern raised was married to Johnson on Labor Day at Red Bud, last Thurs. noon she looked in the mirror & shot herself in the head, died 5 o clock; she was cashier in Packing House in St. Louis, were she will also be buried over there. Mrs. George Gregson who was taken to Red Bud hospital last week was operated on for appendix, & will be removed to her home tomorrow. Josie Kaiser is keeping house. We drove to New Athens, Lenzburg; Happy Hollows: to see Mr. Hamill, he wanted to buy binder or trade on a cow. Steve came here when we got home, told us Chas. Kern & son of Columbia was here looking at drill & binder. Seen some beautiful country by Lenzburg.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Columbia to homecoming, stopped in went they came home, had supper here. Rosalia went over by Wagner’s a little while; this evening we went to Brezzy Hill, ladies free, Moonlighters playing, had a nice time.

Papa & Rose put roofing on the barn, nice cool this morn. Pierre Laut is sick, tonsil’s, has 104 fever. A man here wanted to see Uncle Fred, wanted a drill; but it is already sold. Peaches at Waterloo are selling at $1.65 -75 a bu. by Al. Heyl’s; all $2. & 35 around here. Mr. James Crowe son of the late police men[,] James Crowe, was married Tues. morning to Miss Flora Wielbacher of Columbia, & at that parish, he was formerly of Waterloo, but now of Columbia were he is employed as mechanic there in garage. The New Athens & Hecker hard road route, 156 is now opened. Miss Mildred Rist 15 yr. old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Joh Rist was operated for appendix; last Friday in Red Bud Hospital. Miss Elva Knapp, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Knapp was honored with a shower, given by & Misses Edna & Lavina Geodelle, she will become the bride to Mr. Harold Kloft of East St. Louis, the marriage to take place early in Sept. Last Mon. morning Bill Donahue of Midway Inn on Route 3, was awakened by a barking dog, on investigating found that his 25 half grown turkeys had disappeared, from there roosting place, he found 19 doped [sic – dropped] in a cornfield nearby.

Rob. Mertz is going to put a new roof on the shed binder out at Henry’s today. Summer begins. They oiled to Hecker streets. Cleaned chick house. Henry & family came, kids stayed here had dinner, Bertille rode along with them to Belleville, shopping. We sure had a nice rain, rather windy. There was a man killed on the Columbia hardroad, in automobile accident. Mr. & Mrs. Omar Mertz of Red Bud have a baby boy born June 15. Mrs. Bertha Probst has returned home from the hospital. Miss Marjorie Rausch is in the hospital, was operated for appendix. Beautiful evening after the rain. Had first chicken & kraut slaw dinner.

We worked the garden, & watermelon patch. Mr. Chas. Hill of Waterloo sold his house in town or rather had to sell, last Sat. to Sheriff Gauen’s son, $3500; Hill is going to built a house on wheels & leave Waterloo, going out somewhere in Mo. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening. There was a little fuss up at Maniers yet last night; Mertz, R. Meng & guy Columbia.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for dinner. There where some fellows here from Fults looked at our mule. Rosalia & Bertille went along with Aunt Mary to church here this afternoon, instrutcion [sic]; stations. Alois Havey looked at our hogs & Weilbacher’s from Coloumbia [sic] came & bought our 8 pigs for $15.00. Ed. Classen was here looked at the mules.

We where at Red Bud. Herman Goessling & Adelia Wagner where published 1-2-3 time, wedding is Tue. morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed for dinner, then we all drove out to look at bridge, where they men are working, then went to Henry’s, but was nobody home there; then we went back home again, played 2 games pinochle, they went home. Mr. & Mrs. Alfred May came to pay Uncle Fred interest, they stayed for supper, then till 8:30, they left then to go to see Mrs. Codty, who isn’t feeling so very well & also to see Ambrose Doyl’s boy at the hospital, he got operated for appendix. Mr. & Mrs. Ed. Burke have a little baby boy; & also Mr. & Mrs. Joe Kunkel. Mrs. William Koch of Coxeyville is being buried this afternoon at Waterloo Evangical [sic] Church & cemetery, she was taken to the hospital on Feb. 10 & died a week later Feb. 17, she had fell & fractured her hip; she has two sons, Roy of Waterloo & Elmer, Columbia & adopted daughter Edith Rudolph; at home, she was 59 years old.
