Thanksgiving. We went out butchering at Uncle Fred’s today. Him & Papa went over to Chris. Buehler’s to get the hogs, 2 of them for 5¢ lb. Rosalia & Bert took his machine & went out. Oscar Birkners family where also there. We had the first snow this yr. & hard, rain this eve, & colder. We had lunch & dinner there at Aunt Mary’s. The way we heard Clarence Hepp & Lillian Thouevenot where married today & also a couple down at Red Bud, a Ratz girl & Bogard from Belleville.
Monday, Nov. 2, 1931
Papa & Rosalia went to Henry’s this morn, he is butchering a heifer today, or a cow rather, Osie Neff is the butcher. They had dinner there. Henry & Rosalia went around selling it this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up to plant out rose bushes, then they went to Chris Buehler’s. Ed Pabst was here & brought us 9 bus. big late potatoes. Oliver Birkner was here & got Mrs. Stehfest scale, that she left in Henry’s machine. There was people here from St. Louis that wanted to buy lard, but ours was all sold. Melba Hepp gave a Micellanoues [sic] Shower at there home last Thurs. night in honore of Miss Lidyia Thovenenot who will become the bride of Clarence Hepp in the near future. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here awhile this evening, then they went to Ed Parker’s, he had to furnished musci [sic], it was a surprize [sic] for Anna Marie her birthday. He got $2.00 for the musci [sic].
Friday, Oct. 30, 1931
It is cold out today. The fellows that left there truck here yesterday got it again today. I seen in the paper that Ervin Boo & Vera Kropp are married now, he had his one leg taken off. The School children of the Public School is Hecker had apple picking last Sat. they picked 25 bu. one bu for every child & stored them in the School to be aten [sic] this winter. Irvin [?] Reheis was awarded $50 for selling tickets for the Lincoln Teathre [sic- theatre]. The Blackburn School is having a big Hallo’wen party tonight for the children.

Leona & the kids where up we washed, all her quilts & ours. She took a basket green tomatoes & some ripe ones, along home. They & Bertille went down to the molasses factory, she left at 2 gal. jar there to get filled with foam. They told us down there about Bug Schaefer getting married & a wedding dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill tonight. We all went & had a good time, the Melody Club furnished the musci [sic]. They had double bridesmaids, & a crowd, the hall was packed.
Saturday, Sept. 26, 1931
Wm. Ganey was here & paid part interest $66.00 & still $59.00 due. It turned cold awful sudden today. The St. Augustine’s Church of Hecker, has pinic [sic] today, & Anhuser [sic] Busch from St. Louis is to be there with radio musci [sic] & donkeys. Miss Laurena Mehrman & Orlando Skaer are getting married at Floraville this afternoon, an a dance tonight there. We where all at Waterloo this afternoon & went to confession, we came through Red Bud home, stopped at J. Ducars, they have a team mules for sale.
Sunday, Sept. 20, 1931
We all went to Red Bud church. The Hecker Priest read Ignatz Neff name off this morning, he signed the paper at Belleville, this week his kids can come back to school if they want too. Osie Neff was here looking for Uncle Fred. Today is homecoming at Floraville. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here & then about 4:30 left for the picnic. Joe Hibbert the carpenter & his brother Frank & a cousin was here for a short visit. He was visiting Hecker friends this afternoon. This evening we drove out to Henry’s took them along & went to the basement floor dance at George Freund’s. Adm. 30¢ as enter. Rheinhardt & Skaer furnished musci [sic], 3 pieces. Papa was up at the store awhile & he also stopped at George Wagner’s, she said that her sister Lorenia Merhmann & Orlindo Skaer are getting married next Sat. Sept 26 at Floraville.

Papa went up town. Today he is supposed to be at Belleville but ain’t going, Ignatz Neff received a letter too, he is going in. Papa went to Red Bud on business. There was a man going around taking orders to sell coffee. I seen in the Waterloo paper that Wm. Heyl’s daughter Ester got married to Hugh Mays last Sat. Mildred Stiffler got, was granted a divorce from Harry Stiffler. Steve was over & looked at our hogs this eve, they walk lame, but eat good.

Papa went out in the woods this morning to get some poles. Today Slyvester [sic – Sylvester] Miller & Hilda Bertram are getting married. Leona went to church to see it. Her sister & brother where the attendants. We got the report this morning that Henry S. Braun died last night at 7 o clock & will be buried Thurs. morn. We heard he had heart failure & indigestion trouble & then again we heard, he went to get a drink of water by the well & fell over dead. Clarence Wittenauer was here, he wants 3½¢ to haul wheat from Pabst’s to our place & takes 3 to Red Bud & 4 to New Athens & 5 to Freeburg. So Papa got Eichenseer’s to haul it, they will do it for 3¢. Bertille was by Mrs. Rennecker about a half hr. this evening.

Today Wm. Curran & Julia Ruby are getting married in St. Patrick’s church Tiptown, & this evening they will have a wedding dance at Oak Grove. Philip & Bill came out & we went to the dance. The wedding couple marched around the hall, then they danced a waltz. Mabel Crook & Olga Bozzay where the attendants. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went too. We all went too Waterloo this afternoon to the car sale at Nobbe’s. Aunt Mary won a prize a dress, cap & anklets given by Clara Siegel. The dress she got exchanged for a larger one & Rosalia got the cap, & Bertille the socks. Nelson Kleyer won the old ford coupe that was raffled. There was a man here this morning selling the Daily Advocate paper. The insurance man from Horse Prairie was also here. Victor Eichenseer was here too. We stopped at Henry’s when we went to Waterloo. Frank Dudenhoeffers & Margaret & the family where at Uncle Pete’s last Sunday. She said we should come over to St. Louis next Sunday. Our little chicks are hatching Sat., so I don’t know if we will go or not but I guess if it don’t rain we will.

Today is Wedding High-mass for Lena Roth & Elmer Quirin. Rosalia & Bertille went to church. There were quite a few Paderborn people there. His brother & sister were the attendants. The bride wore a white dress & veil & bridesmaid wore a pale blue dress & hat. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this afternoon.
