Beautiful day. Pap fixed fence. Bert [Bertille] cleaned 2 rooms upstairs, started in today. Davis of Belleville was here. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up, she went quilting, at school hall, he worked garden. Mrs. Stehfest had a stroke this morn. she is pretty sick. Tom Crowe 81 died will be at Quernheims funeral parlor tomorrow funeral Sat. morn. 9 o [clock] at Waterloo.

Friday, Nov. 25, 1938

Pap went over by Emil’s, they say he is sick. Bert [Bertille] send pap shoes back to Sears, to small. Emil’s feeling better. Steve Rennecker got bundle of straw for his chickens to scratch. Oliver Birkner delivered us a sack of chick pellets. Wm. Stehfest birthday today, came over radio by German Band. Birkner family.

Friday, March 6, 1936

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up early; also came last nite, Rose went to church with her; Uncle & pap went out to Uncle Adam’s, he fell again today; while Aunt Mary was there, he carried a rocker out in the kitchen, & then was going for his rocker, & fell on the floor. Emil was at Joe Gregsons. Uncle Fred & pap helped Emil get him to bed that evening, Levi & Clara came here after church, to see how he was, but Emil had called for them to come, so they & Joe’s all went out yet, he couldn’t stand it in bed; pap stopped in this morn. went he went out to the woods, going to get the doctor, he thinks it is fractured hip, Josie was out all nite. Pinkel agent for Nobbe chev. Co. was here wanted to see pap trade cars. Ed. Parker & Fr. Simon came also to see pap, & he wasn’t home. A year ago today Margaret McDermott died. Mr. Ed Weber & Gus Stehfest have new cars the paper says. Rose & Aunt Mary went to church.

Thursday, Sept. 19, 1935

John Lehrs of Belleville buried this afternoon Stehfest cemetery. Papa went down to see Hy. Armstutz about corn fodder, pap & Rosalia cut some this morning. Mrs. Alfred Crook daughter, the youngest & Miller boy being married this morning at Waterloo Church & wedding dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill to nite. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came & we went to the dance, nice crowd, & pretty wedding bride all white with veil & 2 bridesmaids cousins, in light pink & blue; with head bands; best man in dark blue suits, her brother & his brother; she is 19 yrs. & him 21, nice couple. We trimmed up tin cans for flower pots.

Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1935

We washed, quilt. Uncle Fred walked home, did some work, all day. Papa went to barber shop, also went to see Stehfest, about selling his hiefer [sic]. Osie Neff was here, said it was all right to cut the tree down, by his road, so I guess he will. Bertille finished at the dentist & paid him $18.00, Rose $8.00 & B [Bertille] $10.00, rather busy today. Rose got 3 pulled & 1 filled & Berti got 3 filled, of which, killed 2 nerves. A guy from Cairo going to Mo. hit Brun’s car last night, in front of Mrs. Ida Bruns house, Machines were wrecked, but are going to be repaired. Lester & Eugene Bruns in the car were cut about the face, & Chas. Wagner also was hurt in chest; Bruns had 2 wheels on hard road, & this other guy was drunk & found a wiskey [sic] bottle in his car; his car was injured; don’t know yet, who will stand charges. Our line has telephone meeting at Hill’s, Mr. Rennecker & papa went over; Elections of officers, still have the same ones. Clara Wagner & kids, came & then George also after the meeting, we played 5 hand pinochle. The Ladies Aid have quilting in the Evangical [sic] Church these days.

Saturday, Aug. 26, 1933

Papa went to the barber shop, then went down to the school house, sale. of tin roof & old lumber. Bill Stehfest bought it. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped here, they went to Belleville. Maniers have grand opening tonite in the pavilion.

We picked pickles this morn. Papa took Stehefest’s wagon home. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here this evening.

This morning about 12:30 or 1 o’clock every body was roused out for church bell ringing, rings over the lines of the fire at Phil Braun’s shed. It burned completely down to the ground, but saved the house & other buildings. Papa went up with a bucket, they had Smithon [sic] & New Athens fire department, got the water out of Stehefest’s pond & from the neighboring wells. It must of started by the truck, & horn kept blowing & roused Phil out, he went to the shed, broke the door in & the truck was all on flames, they couldn’t save much out of the shed, got the old Ford out & Lester Gregson’s truck. The oil barrels just shot up in the air, it looked terrible, the tin roof on & around the house saved it, & Lizzie Parkinson’s. Mrs. Rennecker came over here that while it took about 1½ to 2 hrs. It is still fire there today yet. We went to Belleville this afternoon. Steve Rennecker came over this evening. Rosalia went over to see Mrs. Hill’s flowers, she called up & said she should come over and look at them. It rained a few shower this evening. Henry was up & got some milk, he was here awhile. Josie Keller went past down to Ben Heyl’s.

Monday, Nov. 2, 1931

Papa & Rosalia went to Henry’s this morn, he is butchering a heifer today, or a cow rather, Osie Neff is the butcher. They had dinner there. Henry & Rosalia went around selling it this afternoon. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up to plant out rose bushes, then they went to Chris Buehler’s. Ed Pabst was here & brought us 9 bus. big late potatoes. Oliver Birkner was here & got Mrs. Stehfest scale, that she left in Henry’s machine. There was people here from St. Louis that wanted to buy lard, but ours was all sold. Melba Hepp gave a Micellanoues [sic] Shower at there home last Thurs. night in honore of Miss Lidyia Thovenenot who will become the bride of Clarence Hepp in the near future. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here awhile this evening, then they went to Ed Parker’s, he had to furnished musci [sic], it was a surprize [sic] for Anna Marie her birthday. He got $2.00 for the musci [sic].
