Wednesday, February 1, 1933

Rosalia & Bertille went out to Uncle Freds remodeled dresses, had dinner & lunch. Bertille baked lemon pie there. We heard the Accidentals, Chas Hill & them played over the radio at noon hr; they had a good many tunes requested from all over, some from Waterloo, Sly Miller was one having his birthday today, they advertised the dance what he is giving at Brezzy [sic] Hill tonite. Mr. & Mrs. H. M. Hill & John Horn, from Hecker, & some from St. Louis, East St. Louis, Mo, different parts of Illinois, it was nice. Papa took dinner along & went out in the woods. Adolph Spalt’s had a pond digging frolic yesterday. Dr. Irwin died & will be buried Fri. morning. Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Grohmann christened there baby girl Lucille Mildred last Sunday. Mr. August Ettling’s mother died at Smithon [sic]. There is quite a few people that is on the sick list at present. It is in the paper that a $25,000 suit was brought against Mr. & Mrs. Julius Armbruster of Smithon [sic] by Dominick Klein, for slander, saying that Klein’s owend [sic] a couple farms, then go out begging from people, or state.

Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1932

Papa went over to see Mr. Ed Meng. It is so awful hot again today, & nights are cool. They are surveing [sic – surveying] for hard road from Waterloo to Hecker, & the paper says it to, on the old road to Hecker, & then from Hirsts’ corner to New Athens. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening & we took them along to Breezy Hill to a free birthday dance, the boss wife at the Condensery birthday, Country Club Orschestra [sic – Orchestra] music, they took up collection, with the hat at 12: oclock, then they played till 1:30, & a big crowd. When we came home we ate watermellon [sic], Aunt Mary brought one along up.

Friday, Aug. 19, 1932

Papa got some whey. We all went to Waterloo this afternoon & paid up bills, dentist, got a barrel for 25¢. It is so cool these days, & nite. Hy. Kirsh was here to see about some Stark’s fruit trees. he is going to replace them for different ones. Seen in the paper free dance at Breezy Hill Aug. 24. Wed.

Sunday, July 17, 1932

We went to Red Bud.  Mrs. Ben Mudd asked up for a donation for the social to be held July 27 we gave a $1.00. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had dinner with us. There was a guy here yesterday selling shoe polish we bought a bottle. R. Schmidt the Shellane Dealer of Waterloo is giving a dance at Breezy Hill this evening & giving away a $100 Gas Range, to the Lucky winner thicket [sic – ticket]. Ed Classen & wife stopped in on there way by to say “Hello”! Bertille went over to Rennecker’s to exchange papers, Waterloo, & Red Bud. We all went to Breezy Hill to the dance, a big crowd, Melody Club Orchestra. Adm. 25¢. The Stove was won by a Stump, a Hartman from Red Bud, & a  fellow from Renault, 3 different prizes where awarded.

Sunday, April 10, 1932

Went to Red Bud. This afternoon is confirmation at Waterloo. It is awful cloudy, the paper says probaly [sic] showers & colder. Tonite, the Rod & Gun Club all giving dances, & a free wedding dance, Ruby & Wolf. from Waterloo, we all & Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, all went to the wedding dance at Breezy Hill, an a big crowd there. We had dinner at Aunt Mary’s & played cards across the street. Martin Fahey was here to look at our colts, & also a man from Edgemont, & one from Columbia, but they said, they where to small, they wanted them for work.

Friday, Dec. 18, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, then we all went to Mrs. Reheis funeral, it was awfully large. We got a written invitation to attend a Birthday Dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill Sat. nite Dec. 19 no name. Ben Heyl’s & Spalt’s had a wreck in town, tore the wheel of Spalt’s machine, while Heyl was turning in to Braun’s.

Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1931

Papa was up town, it rained last night. We washed, ironed, patched. Papa went up to Barthel’s this afternoon with the Whippet, got clycerine [sic – glycerine] put in the radiator. Today is Holiday in big cities. Fred Kern was buried at 3:30 this afternoon. Tonight is a dance in Weber’s barn given by Bill Herzog, also a dance in Smithon [sic] & a birthday dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill. This morning at 10 ‘oclock, Miss Jenny Kemp had a heart stroke & died. She had fell some time ago & broke her rib, & was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital at Belleville about 1 mo. ago where there she died now.

Thursday, Oct. 22, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up all day, cleaned there garden.  They had chicken soup dinner with us.  Papa shocked the last of our popcorn today.  There where 2 ladies here this afternoon wanted to buy some White Rock hens, but we won’t sell any of ours now.  George Emery when coming home from the dance at Brezzy [sic] hill the other night ran in the ditch by Parker’s, he was sleeping, he smashed his car, the radiator especially.  Henry & family came up this evening after there a dance in Kammler’s Hall, Herzog Orchestra.

Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1931

Leona & the kids where up we washed, all her quilts & ours.  She took a basket green tomatoes & some ripe ones, along home.  They & Bertille went down to the molasses factory, she left at 2 gal. jar there to get filled with foam.  They told us down there about Bug Schaefer getting married & a wedding dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill tonight.  We all went & had a good time, the Melody Club furnished the musci [sic].  They had double bridesmaids, & a crowd, the hall was packed.

Sunday, Oct. 11, 1931

We where at Red Bud church today.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where up for dinner.  Today Emma Vogler & a Bickhelaupt are getting married.  They had a wedding dance at Breezy Hill we where all there.  They first gave them a chivarie that is his 3rd wife.  Then a wedding march, then the waltz for the couple.  It was a bigger crowd than last night.
