We baked eggless cookies this morn. Rosalia went to Eichenseer’s got oil changed in Chev, got the mail. Mr. Gregory Neff is in St. Elizabeth’s hospital, he got kicked by a blind mule, two weeks ago Tues, he was brought to Hecker first to Dr. Eckert, & unconsious [sic], but now they took him to the hospital, he is improving somewhat, they way last nights paper reads. Henry & family came up for supper, & brought the kettles up. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went to Henry’s to get there blood saussage [sic], just before Henry came up.

Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1931

Papa was up town, it rained last night. We washed, ironed, patched. Papa went up to Barthel’s this afternoon with the Whippet, got clycerine [sic – glycerine] put in the radiator. Today is Holiday in big cities. Fred Kern was buried at 3:30 this afternoon. Tonight is a dance in Weber’s barn given by Bill Herzog, also a dance in Smithon [sic] & a birthday dance at Brezzy [sic] Hill. This morning at 10 ‘oclock, Miss Jenny Kemp had a heart stroke & died. She had fell some time ago & broke her rib, & was taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital at Belleville about 1 mo. ago where there she died now.

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1931

Papa is hauling wood today.  The bells where tolling this morn. at our church for the first time, for Mrs. William Braun, she died this morn. around 6 o clock at the Belleville Hospital.  Kock got her from there & took her to Red Bud & fixed her up, brought her home around 1o o clock, Henry & Leona, Rosalia, Bertille, Aunt Mary went down to see her this evening, there wasn’t many people there because they didn’t bring her home till late.  They have 7 children, oldest is 13 & youngest 4.  Joe Watchels have a little baby boy born Sun. 6 Sept.  Lester Gregson’s have a little boy since last week Thurs. 2 [crossed out] or 3 Sept, they christined [sic] it Virgil Lee, Lee Gregson & Agnes where sponsors.  Jack & Willie Ganley & Fr. Grooten where by Hill’s this evening.

Tuesday, August 25, 1931

Our company had breakfast , & stay a little while then left for Ben Neff’s.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where also over here.  Henry was here for lunch this morning.  He was also here for dinner, lunch supper.  Ed Pautler the oil man was here too, he brought Henry some oil up here.  I seen in the paper that Joe Mueth & that married Ben Neff’s daughter Minnie have a little baby girl born last Friday, it is the first born.  Frances Eichenseer’s wife of Belleville is under going medical attention at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.  Clarence Wiegand’s wife of near Smithon [sic] is also at the hospital, they also have a little baby girl, first child.  George Neff is sick with the dropsy, has changed doctors, 3 one already, he is by Osies now.  The way they say everything was free last night, played euchre free, ice cream & soda, & dancing all free.  We went down to the cemetery this evening, it just looks awful there, they started yesterday, today they never plowed they just took the tombstones & rocks & haul them out, some of them back of the house.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was there too, we took the rose bushes what was left on the grave along home, but only 2 we got.
