Papa pumped the water out of Uncle Fred’s cellar this morning. Mr. Rennecker & Hy Armstutz are butchering 1 hog at Mrs. Arns today. Bertille got the papers. Mr Wm. Laut & Mr. John Hepp are awful bad sick no hopes for recovery. Mr. Laut got a light stroke again. Mr. Hepp here in town has kidney trouble. There is a big free dance tonite at the Odd Fellow Hall at Waterloo. Seen in the paper that Wm. Sensel’s mother, Mrs. Mary Sensel was buried last Sun. afternoon at Waterloo 74 yrs. old; her husband preceded her in death about 2 yrs. ago. Dr. Sennot died, most probably be buried this afternoon, being ill for several months, in former years, he practice as his doctor in Hecker for several yrs. According to Bill Kleyer’s onion, this is supposed to be a very dry year. Sheriff Al Gaven took Wm. Zimmer Jr. to the Vandalia Penal Farm last Friday. Alf. Mueller who was clerk at Connor’s Store is now employed at Gauen’s Store since the first & Joe Johnson is now employed at Connor’s.

We cleaned chicken house, put clean straw in it, left the chickens out awhile today. Papa went up town. Mr. Tecklenburg brought our case back & took 6 doz. eggs along 28½¢. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s to get a load of oats & wheat. Bobby is in bed with the earache & fever, awful nice day, warm.

Josie Keller came here this morning a little bit & called Heyls, then she went on down she was invited there for tonite New Years Eve party & it is Ben’s birthday, she intends to stay till about Wednesday. Papa got crushing done this morn. Geo. Schilling says Ben’s in bed this morn. & so is Levi Ganley. There is a sign put in front of the bank door again this morn, made of cedar, a wreath, & on a board, remind that another year past bank closed, just 2 years. Mr. Wm. Reagean & son where here on business. Mrs. Geodelle called up for Rosalia to come out there at Henry’s now, because she wants to go home with milk driver this morrow morning. Henry & Floyd where up but not outside yet today. There was a little shooting go on here in town awhile, shooting the old year out & the new in.

It rained last night & nearly all day. Bertille called up all around see how everybody was. There all in bed at Henry’s except Bobby. Mrs. Geodelle is out there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary is about the same yet. Dr. Schmidt from Red Bud was up at Hill’s this morning, they are both awful hoarse. Papa got the papers went it stopped raining, isn’t much in it, thought that a few got paid for there land for the hard road on Route 156 from Waterloo to Hecker. Mary J. Kemp got $26.00. Jennie Kemp heirs $82.00. Bessie Parker $225.00. Leslie Wilkinson $57.50, don’t know how it is they all got paid, & guess wouldn’t give. Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Heumer of St. Louis have a baby girl born Dec. 27 Tues. 8 lb. 14 ozs. she was formerly Minnie Geodelle, Gus’ sister. Arthur Stiehl cut his hand pretty bad, they had to take him to the doctor.

The weather is sure nice these days. Papa went up town got some aspirins tablets this morning. He split wood, smoked summer sassage [sic] all day. Papa & Rosalia rung the pigs this morn. We made a patch beer today. Leona came up she was by Doc. Eckert, they are sick to now. Henry is in bed & Floyd had fever last night she said, guess everybody will get it, bad cold. Steve Rennecker came over awhile this afternoon. They are all right yet, George Wagner family & Mrs. Rennecker went to Belleville this afternoon.

We washed, ironed. Papa has a headache & a cold too. Rosalia is just about over it. The flu & grippe is just all over, you see in the paper, Belleville, Milstadt [sic], Hecker, Smithon [sic], just everywhere. In Urbana the students can’t go home for Christmas, they are quarantined for Scarlet fever, so much sickness it is terrible. Papa went to Red Bud on business this afternoon. Mr. Tecklenburg egg man got 9 doz. today, he paid 29¢, eggs are coming down he says, & there isn’t many.

Klotz’s, Fritsche’s, Boll’s, Buehler’s are all butchering today, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary had to help Christ. nice day. Fr. Grooten’s is very ill, some said he was out of mind.

This morning everybody was out shoveling snow, it drifted a lot, good snow balling & sleigh riding today. Papa & Bertille went to Red Bud this afternoon, got some giz and capsules to worm our chickens, we did it this afternoon. Tonite there is to be euchre & dance at Paderborn, we had intended to go, but not by this weather we won’t go. Leona called for Dr. Eckert to come out there, Floyd took sick, he wouldn’t talk, had craps, Dr. said it come from eating to much warm pumpkin pie, after he vomited he was better, he has fever. It was about 8′ oclock when she called for him this evening. Floyd had been sleeping already.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came here, then went to Sparta Fair. Mrs. Griffin is awful sick, they took her to the Belleville hospital Sun. morning. Angela Eichenseer got operated on a growth in her nose. Papa & Rosalia went out in the woods & made a few posts. Chas. Jung egg man was here, he say he’ll take all our spring chick tomorrow morning. Henry & family where up this evening, he brought 4 barrels up to the whey place.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary where here for chicken dinner, & supper. We all went out to Chris Buehler’s but there was nobody home, then we drove down to Sensel’s to see the lake, then we stopped in at George Parker’s, Aunt Mary got ½ sweet potatoes for 25¢. It rained this evening. We seen the search light at Scottfield, how it shown around tonite, I guess there must of been an airplane out. We went to Red Bud Condensary to see if they would by cream, but they want milk, so we can’t sent no cream. The Red Bud paper says that Mrs. Owen Fahey is in the hospital since last Thurs. Sensels lost 35 hogs.
