Papa went in the woods this afternoon, colder & raining tonite. Rose finished her dress. Berti baked cookies. Hugo Probst’s have a baby boy 9½ lb; born last nite.

Aaron Papenberg’s 22 yr. birthday today. Leona brought Henry up & he couldn’t get the tractor started all morning, so he got Hugo Probst to fix it for him, started right away then. Papa is hauling coal 2 loads for basement & 1 nut coal for brooder stove .05¢; this morning; finished hauled 182 bus. including 12 bus. nut coal @ 5¢ the others 8½ & tax all $15.53 from the East Side coal mine at Freeburg. Henry finished plowing, took the tractor along home; had lunch, dinner. Papa hauled 2 loads wood from Pabsts – 60¢ paid for sawing. Mr. Ed Meng got a light stroke yesterday morning seated in a rocking chair, had the doctor, was better again now. Sterling circus in Waterloo this afternoon & evening porformances [sic] Adm. 25¢; We went in this evening, & crowd just picked reserved seats 10¢ extra, chairs & Boy it sure was good; flying trapeze, elephants & horse dance etc, big band, 3 different side shows at 10¢ Adm; littlest mother & baby. Wild west, 500 lbs. boy, a girl with thousand eyes & so much; a girl lyed [sic] down & elephant walked over her, Monkey, dogs & baby elephant etc.

Papa & Rose hauled load wheat to Waterloo from out at Henry’s, got 77¢ 17 bus.; that is 3rd load from out there; papa took the Whippet to Probst’s & got oil changed; 16603 miles. Berti cooked plum jelley [sic]. Cloudy & rainy this afternoon; & night stops threshing again.

Finished painting garage. Henry is sick, in bed since yesterday, has fever. Papa took the Whip. to Probst garage had it looked over. Bernice got 1 doz. eggs, brought the yeast back. Chris Buehler is threshing today. Ed Pabst threshed this afternoon, papa went down at 3:30, they threshed few loads bushels on our land, then it rained, had to quite [sic -quit] for today, pretty nice shower, steady rain, at Belleville, it rained so heavy that wheat shocks were lying on hard road, & Joe Schillings run they had no rain at all; sure is funny. We went to the triple free birthday dance at Donahue’s, Erna Braun 19, Mildred Feherens & Bill Donahue, large crowd Ellis band & didn’t come till 9:30, some orchestra.

Went to Red Bud in Uncle Fred’s car; raining all morning.We went to the Evangicals [sic] summer & pinic [sic] about 6 o’clock, had supper at home. Wasn’t much of a crowd. Birkner Orc. played musci [sic]; the quilts were won by Mr. Probst, Lena Birkner & some relative of Pabpenbergs, the first was raffled off & the other 2 by playing lotto. Harry Kammler gave a dance in the evening, spoiled the pinic [sic]. Moonlighters played. Ruth Hoffman 17 yr. old.

Cloudy this morning. Papa went up to get skim milk. We made out 1 spring [chicken] today; & boy was it good. We went took a drive to Burksville, etc to see some people. Clara Wagner came to get her hair set. Papa took the Chev. to Probst, oil changed; 28144 miles, pump gauge didn’t work.

Went to Red Bud; they made $80. clear at the card party Tues. nite. We went out to Uncle Fred’s for dinner & supper. Mr. John & Sam Krehrer, were also there, looked at implements etc. We went to Pautler at Waterloo tonite, free double birthday dance, musci [sic] by Cowboy’s, nice crowd, there was a wedding dance at Dreamland, Mueller & Shewer Jr. It rained nearly all evening. Ed Fahey said Martin May turned his car over last night at Vanburen’s, 5 in the car, went to Waterloo to get Rose, & going home, car came out Vanburens lane, & collision, May’s car is a total wreck, took Martin to the doctor, man from Renault was driving, Rose has scratches & bruised a little; that is the third car he wrecked in a short time. Mr. Robert Probst is having a dance at Manier’s tonite, musci [sic] by Vogel Bros. Adm. 25¢.

We went out to Henry’s, helped clean house, moved the bed rooms; waxed floors; had lunch & dinner. Rained this afternoon heavy showers; planted out cabbage & tomatoe [sic] plants. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were here; papa took Chev. to Probst’s garage, got repaired.

Went to church, colder again today, made fire in furnace again. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stopped awhile then went home. Frieda Buehler called, & wanted to know if they were staying in Hecker, so most probably they will be having company today. We ate our first lettuce yesterday, dinner & supper, & today again. Boy! does it taste good. We brought Agnes Krehrer along from Red Bud, she told us that they were invited to Chas. Hepp’s this afternoon. Mildred was giving a surprize [sic] shower for Melba who is to be married to a Liefer in June. There has been 40 hr. Devotion at Waterloo these days, the closing tonite. In Chicago they had snow; yesterday. There was a collision in Hecker, in front of the church, Pete Kaiser & Frank Birkner, being Kaiser’s fault, he turned on to the road when Frank was passing, no one hurt, but cars damaged, Kaiser is going to settle it all, he just has a new V8 Ford, about a week, & now wrecked; Birkner’s fenders were torned [sic] lose, in Probst’s garage now. We went to Waterloo, attended 40 hr. Devotion, the church was filled; about 12 priests present, procession of girl’s & boy’s, priests.
