Papa & Rosalia went out in the woods took dinner along. It is raining a little this morning. April Showers. They only went as far as Henry’s & brought load posts along back, didn’t go to the woods at all. We got the chick yard all spade over & sewed in oats. Cut the lawn, papa disked the potato ground, but to wet to plant yet. Dan Goedell & family stoped here, thought Leona was up, they wanted to tell her that Mrs. Geodells Dan’s mother died & will be buried Fri. afternoon at 1:30, from the house; she should tell Tom Crowe to let his folks no [sic – know] in St. Louis. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were at the cemetery & then came here. We all went to the cemetery this evening, took 2 sacks ground along & filled up Louise grave, sunk in a little. Rosalia took eggs up got 14¢, she heard Mrs. Louis Birkner 66 yrs. had died this evening. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary left right away & went up there. Papa was talking to Louis this afternoon, & he said she was getting better, only her eyes & face was all swoll up today, from the medicine, what Pautler gave, he said thats what he wanted, they thought everything was allright; & now she is dead already. Pautler said she had poision [sic] in her & that had to come out. She died on Emma, Oscar’s girls 5 yr. old birthday today. 19 grandchildren.

Beautiful Easter Mon. We washed, ironed, fried in meat. Today is a funeral at Hecker, Catholic cemetery, Irene Durang’s from Newton, Kansas, ship to St. Louis Union Station at 7:30 & there Gundlach has charge & buried at 9:30 here. Mr. Lester Bruns 29 & Melissa Weigand 27, wedding today; Hosto Parsonage at Smithon [sic]. Rosalia & papa went out to haul wood together. Berti spaded chick yard. We went over to Renneckers tonite a little while. Eggs 14¢.

Robert Laut & Joe Watchel got Rob’s hog this morning, took it to Eichenseers got it weighed 439 lbs. We went in the woods all day. This evening planted onions sets, radishes, lettuce in garden. It is in the paper that Lester Bruns & Melissa Weigand will be married Easter Monday & that he bought some land from Levi Gregson. Pete Gardener Sr. Undertaker of Belleville died last night, got sick Mon. evening with a cold & it turned to pneoumina [sic], had heart stroke & died, will be buried Mon. afternoon on account St. Joseph’s Day, no funeral, to St. Luke’s Church Bellville [sic]. Mass will be said.

We washed & ironed, Oh! my some wind, blew the cloths line in pieces; dried good. Papa hauled in hay. We all went to Conrand Myerscough’s to look at a horse that he wants to trade with the mule, but they can’t get together so far; also went to see Mr. Laurent, also by Ruma, advertised our heifers for sale. Rosalia went after the mail, send order for Aunt Mary hair color, took Mrs. Staufebiel’s pattern back, got 14¢ for eggs. Mr. Hill came for news. Rudolph got buried at Red Bud this morn. Dr. Roland Isselhartd is observing his natal anniversary at 212 S. Charles St.

Papa hauled hay. We washed. Ed Neff repaired our Whippet this morning. Papa got the mules hoofs trimed [sic]. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this evening, went up to see Louise Birkner, she is getting along pretty good; then they & Rosalia went to Belleville to John Breutigams to see Mr. John Birkner, 78 yrs. old; his wife nee Armstutz died 5 yrs. tomorrow. Mrs. Anna Helfrich, died yesterday morning at the home of this daughter, Mr. Joe Karban of Paderborn, we’ll [sic] be buried tomorrow morning 8 o ‘clock mass there. That is Nic Helfrich’s mother & George Neff’s grandma, there boy is the only great grandchild. Mr. Hill was here for news. Mr. Valentine Berg died this morning & will be buried Wed. morning 9:30 Catholic Church here, & then to cemetery. He was making his home with Ed his son, in Blackjacks age 84 yrs.

Bertille baked oatmeal cookies, Rose made gloves. Papa went up town; ordered load coal, Eichenseer’s to haul it tomorrow. Rosie took 8 doz. eggs to Mertz got 13 ½¢ got cheese Talbot’s. Chas. Morrison aged 82 yrs. died Sun, afternoon, & buried Tues. afternoon from Wagner’s Parlor, to cemetery.

Hauled water in the cistern. Papa went to Waterloo got out shoes repaired. The Farm Bureau had meeting all day. The bread man stopped. The P & H Lumber Co. went bankrupt, Archie Weibul, Ditenberger, Berger took it over & is now called Waterloo Lumber Co. & has nothing to do with Petri & Hill; they still are going to do contracting & building. Mrs. Louis Osterhage nee (Jehling) local contractors wife was buried Mon. afternoon, sick a week.

Pap went out haul logs. Aunt Mary & Josie where here for dinner, came up for church, stayed here for the cheese, played 2 games pinochle this afternoon. Mr. Talbot brought 3 lbs. cheese got it from Mertz Store. “St. Valentine’s Day.” Mrs. Henry Hoerth nee Wagner, of East St. Louis was buried yesterday, found her dead in bed. Mr. Aug. Busch, of the Busch Brewery of St. Louis killed himself yesterday; shot, on account of his health. We went to Red Bud service, took Helfrich’s along. The electric lights went out in church. Eggs are 15¢.

We washed, nice day, papa went out in woods. Wrote Wm. Ganley a nice letter this morn. Pap & Rose went to the woods. A man around selling soap chips & face soap. Mr. Hill was here for news. Lucinda Eichenseer was around selling chances for quilt, have one already. Eggs are 15¢ today, top hogs $4.50. Mr. George Parrot, died Sun. buried Wed. morn, at Red Bud church & cemetery, Mrs. Joe Mauer’s father, he was 67.
Friday, Feb. 2, 1934
Fried in bacon, sausage. Pap & Rose went in the woods. Baked bread. Ground hog can see his shadow today, no 6 weeks bad weather. Hy. Emery got hit by a passing automobile last Sat. night in Waterloo, but is not injured. Hawson the Plumber’s dad, of Waterloo died & buried. Fred Friedrich boy while attendening [sic] one of Pautler Dance’s at the park, slide down the railing banaster [sic], to the stair way & run over a splinder [sic] through his leg, in on one side & out the other, they didn’t take him to the doctor right away & now he has such awful high fever & is bad sick; talk is they want to sued Dr. Pautler for it. Good many people hauling wheat today. Mr. Vogt from Red Bud was here & looked at our heifers. Mr. Eddy Watchel of Waterloo had a accident last Sun. night, smashed his car, & was bruised up a little, it happened by Oak Grove.
