Robert Laut & Joe Watchel got Rob’s hog this morning, took it to Eichenseers got it weighed 439 lbs. We went in the woods all day. This evening planted onions sets, radishes, lettuce in garden. It is in the paper that Lester Bruns & Melissa Weigand will be married Easter Monday & that he bought some land from Levi Gregson. Pete Gardener Sr. Undertaker of Belleville died last night, got sick Mon. evening with a cold & it turned to pneoumina [sic], had heart stroke & died, will be buried Mon. afternoon on account St. Joseph’s Day, no funeral, to St. Luke’s Church Bellville [sic]. Mass will be said.

Oscar Klotz & Eugene Bruns came & got the hog weighed 280 lbs; they took it home on our sleigh. A man around selling 7 bars soap for 25¢. The relief workers are on work again today. We all went out to Henry’s this evening, took ½ doz. eggs & package cookies & ice, & made ice cream out there. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were also there, we played 3 games pinochle, ladies against gents, ladies won 2 games, we also played 6 hand euchre, 2 games. Robert & Willis has a bad cold, & cough.

Thursday, Dec. 21, 1933

Papa went out in the woods, this morn & afternoon. We ironed, & patched, got things ready for Christmas. Bill was at Henry’s today, killing sheep, I guess. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stoped [sic] here on there way down to Chris Buehlers at Red Bud. Bertille mailed Christmas cards & then went to Eliza Boll’s on business. Eggs are 15¢ at Eichenseers today. The Catholic School children are having a little program, this evening to surprise Fr. Aydt on his 1st Anniversary here, the parishoners [sic] should also attend. The way it reads in the paper, Eugene Bruns & Adale Weber must be married, cause it say Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Bruns, attended a birthday party at Millstadt.

Papa got crushing done this morn. Osie Neff was telling him that Bruns are all sick but one, got tyhoid [sic – thyphoid] fever. Roy Gregson of Red Bud had his machine stolen. George Schilling is going to start in threshing Mon, if it don’t rain. There is a big street dance in Chester, Ill. tonite. Miss Frances Schilling is taking her habit today & in two years [words crossed out]; Odillo Eichenseer has to take Mr. & Mrs. Joe Schilling there going to leave today. Misses Martha Schilling & Helen Kectriz left yesterday also for Indiana to take in the performance. Fr. Aydt, is going today to, to be there for tomorrow, & then go to the Worlds Fair; George Wagner & family came over this evening. A lady got 5 doz. eggs 8½¢ & selling fruit jars & bonnets.

We sent a birthday card to Josie Keller today is her birthday. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary & Henry where all here, then we went up to Neffs house to Emma’s funeral. She was buried at Red Bud & also in that church. She was 20 yrs. old. The pallbearers where: Edwin Wacthel, Edwin Reheis, Lester Bruns, Ralph Wiegand, Joe Griffin, Werner Kammler, Quernheim’s undertaking. The baby Ed Jr. is going to stay with Neff’s.

They gave beautiful prizes, Bessie Parker got the silk pillow with a slip in candy, Clarance [Clarence] Wittenauer got a bottle perfume, & many others got prizes at the show.  We went tonight again they raffled 2 blankets, Levi Gregson, & Hilda Neff were the winners.  They also sold candy, & Erma Hepp got the silk spread, Nick Helfrich, the silk hose, & many others, Rosalia got a teaspoon.  They sure do draw the crowd, there play tonight was Kitty’s Statue.  They sold out on the candy, & there was a blanket left that no one called for, so he raffled that one & Eugene Bruns winner.  Rosalia & Bertille went to church this morning.  We washed, ironed, patched, baked bread today.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary come this afternoon to work at there place, they where here for lunch & supper, then they went us, to the show.  We were by Mrs. Rennecker & got some flowers.

I seen in the paper that Fritzie Boo had his leg taken off now, & is getting along nicely.  Martin Schilling’s have a little baby girl, they now have 2 boy’s & 2 girls.  Papa went down to the truck patch & planted pickle seed, he was over by Louis Armstutz’s a little while he called him over there.  Rosalia & Bertille went to the Jackson’s show tonight, & the people there, it was sure a crowd, most of them with there parked cars, they sold soap, medicine, & candy, it had slips in the boxes, Harold Wagner had one with it he got a big Indian Blanket, Rosalia [Rosalie?] Braun, Meba Hepp got teaspoons, Henry Bruns a mirrow, & many others received prizes.  They played the show “Crazy House” it was good.  They also gave free attendance thickes [tickets] out, we got 3 of them, chances to win a blanket.

 

Sunday, April 26, 1931

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary, Henry & family where all here for dinner.  Philip & Bill where here for lunch.  In the evening they came back & we went down to the Brick House,  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went there too.  Bill Herzog furnished musci, [sic] they had a pretty fair crowd.  They charged the gents 25¢ ladies free.  The Red Bud Dramitic [sic] Club came to Hecker to the new school hall & gave a play to-night.  There was a terrible accident in Hecker, this evening, there was a car came from the west & didn’t make no stop, & Eugene Bruns was going by & then smashed together, nobody was hurt but the cars where both damaged.  The stranger car was a man from Belleville & one from Chester, they where intoxicated.  The Sheriff was called & he arrested them took them to Waterloo to jail & the way they said they would have to pay $100 fined & 10 day in jail.  I don’t know who is right, we heard now again that the boy’s where uncosinence [unconscious].

Papa went to get crushing this morning.  Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s again today to build on the milk house, they had dinner & lunch there.  It rained all day & tonight too.  There is a dance down in the Brick House given by Lester Bruns & Ralph Wiegand, we where invited, but didn’t go on account of the weather.  Odillo Eichenseer was here & he delivered 100 lbs. flour this morning.

Rosalia went up to clean school today.  Papa is cutting corn.  Tonight is a dance at Weigands in the brick house.  Milton Wagner & Henry Hillischeim is giving it.   Milton & Lester Bruns stopped here last night when they went home from work and he invited us to come.  Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up this evening and we all went down to the dance.  Karl Boll furnished music.  There were quite a few women cleaning the school today.  Leona & Frances Schilling came up together.  She left the kids here with me.  Papa is cutting corn this afternoon again.
