Made cottage cheese; Olivia Laut came got 1 pt. & 5¢ milk. Rose & Berti went out to Henry’s washing, not such a nice day, we took our wash along to; ironed some there today. Some guys from Baldwin looked at our horse; Berneice got the mail; Berti got the free song book & picture from the Pinex Co from Chicago Station, Loul [sic – LuLu] Bell & Scoty [sic – Scotty] also on it. Shrove Tues today. Eggs went up again, 22¢ today; over the radio, so many people being killed in auto accidents here of late, there was a police man shot in E. St. Louis a guy with Kenty [Kentucky] license at 4 o clock this eve. The Ausgutus parish, is having a card pantry tonite; last before lent; Rose & Berti went but didn’t get a thing. Mrs. Levi Gregson got attendance prize.

Pap got crushing done. Con Myerscough & son Leo stopped in to see our mare, didn’t buy yet. Rain this afternoon & nite. Berti got a answer from the Extension Magazaine [sic] that dances in advent & lent, was no sin, & could also go on St. Patricks. night. Myrtle Keim of Waterloo is having a birthday dance at Pautlers tonite. Moonlight Orch. Adm. Gents 25 ladies free.

Cleaned back yard. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary were up this afternoon – had supper, we went to church this eve. lent devotions. Mr. Eugene Bruns was taken to Belleville hospital in Bux Ambulance this afternoon, he was sawing lumber & got hit in the forehead, pretty bad they say; cut right between the eyes. Eggs 19¢; Papa went out, through Blackjack, bought heifer for $8.00 from Larson by Burksville.

We planted potatoes. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary made garden up here today. We went to Belleville got spring hats, etc. Aunt Mary went to lent service tonight. Mr. & Mrs. Killiam Marquadt have a baby girl born, now have 3 children. Charles & Bernice Wagner are still in with cold & fever, but are getting better. Mr. Wm. Fritsche while riding a bycicle [sic] last Sun. evening fell of [sic] & fractured his tumbh [sic], pretty bad. Papa & Rose went out to Henry’s got mule, harrowed the oats in.

St. Patricks Day. Went to church, went out to Uncle Freds & had dinner & supper, played cards listened to the radio. Mr. Bill Braun of Red Bud came gave us all a ride in his new coach, we all got a chance on one to be given away in Apr. by the Co.; he is a sales agent for chev, working for Schrieber; at Red Bud; we rode out as far Blackjack road & back again, papa drove the car. Oak Grove & Doanhoe’s Brezzy Hill all are having St. Patricks dances tonite, we didn’t go; Lent.

Floyd 6 yr. birthday; We had clean up day, washed curtains, scrub basement etc. Went to Red Bud, lent devotions to nite, we celebrated Floyd’s birthday last night there. Papa went to town settled with Schillings lumber bill; they are sawing in Hecker now. The fire chiefs had there truck out today, pumping water in the barrels from Watchel’s & Kammlers wells. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came up, went to church, lent devotions.

Lent. We went to mass; took Helfrichs along, Miss Magaret [sic] McDermott died at the hospital last night at 12:10 o’clock, surely is to bad; we were going to go in & see her yet this morning, but too late, she was so weak, visitors weren’t allowed in Sun; they were going to take blood transfusions from the boys, but was no use anymore; she is going to be at Koch’s undertaker parlor till tomorrow. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, we were all going to go to Red Bud, & the weather got so bad, thunder & lighten [sic], rain & hail wind storm, so they went back home again, we didn’t get down. John Braun brought the rest of clover seed.

Papa went out to Henry’s, also Ivo Rapp he got 20 bus. oats, @ 60¢, just sacked them up & weighed them didn’t take them along. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came went to the Catholic euchre, was an awful large crowd at the euchre, 33 tables, a quilt was raffled away. We went to Brezzy Hill, to a dance, last before lent, Pals Harmony played musci [sic], not much of a crowd; to much doing tonight, all over something. Celestine Neff was here selling chances on the quilt to be raffled.

Edgar Wittenauer is driving a bakery wagon, Frantzo in New Athens, goes through Hecker, & Red Bud, every morning, blowing the horn! Clarence came in here, we didn’t buy none. We all went out in the woods this afternoon had early dinner & went. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, she, Rose & Berti went to church lent devotion.

Pap went out haul logs. Aunt Mary & Josie where here for dinner, came up for church, stayed here for the cheese, played 2 games pinochle this afternoon. Mr. Talbot brought 3 lbs. cheese got it from Mertz Store. “St. Valentine’s Day.” Mrs. Henry Hoerth nee Wagner, of East St. Louis was buried yesterday, found her dead in bed. Mr. Aug. Busch, of the Busch Brewery of St. Louis killed himself yesterday; shot, on account of his health. We went to Red Bud service, took Helfrich’s along. The electric lights went out in church. Eggs are 15¢.
