Leona was up all day, we stretched curtains. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Bill [Klein] came, went to euchre at Red Bud, given by Holy Name Men; played cards till 10 o’clock & danced after, musci [sic] by Cowell & Schmidt, only had 1 – 2 – 3 prizes in euchre & 1 – 2 in pinochle & 1 – in 500, something new again, 11 points high in euchre by 4.

Thursday, Sept. 29, 1938

Bert [Bertille] cleaned dining room, varnished floor & chairs. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary were up this afternoon. Henry & family came to get seed wheat this eve. Bill [Klein] & Bert [Bertille] went to Paderborn to nite – euchre, had to go to Floraville & back to Paderborn oiling the road again now. Bert [Bertille] had 10 out of 12 got alumnium [sic] cook pot; dance after euchre, musci [sic] by Hy. Kettler; nice crowd.

Tuesday, Sept. 20, 1938

Had no frost. We took 2 hogs & went to Leo’s, loaded his calf went to Belleville to Streck’s pap stayed there with baby [Marita]; he got 11 [cents] for calf 157 lb. & we got for 175 lb. $8.60 & 230 lb. $8.75 that’s yesterdays price, today markets when down again. The Young Ladies have card party in school hall tonite; open air if it isn’t to cold. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came here awhile they & Bill & Bert [Bertille] went to euchre in hall, got nothing A. [Aunt] Mary got last price package napkins. 8 points. Leo & family & pap went to Red Bud to wake at Koch’s of Mrs. Isabel Gallagher. Emil came brought a letter with Nic. Brands name on it, it came from Mrs. Ryan of Oxley Mo.; wanting information about Turstenberg family, which she is a relative; to write. The sheriff of Waterloo & Belleville was out in Hecker gathering a few boys that damaged Vera’s property Sun. nite; Clyde Mueth, Clarence Braun, Bill Braun, few others yet, did about $150.00.

Wednesday, May 4, 1938

Nice day. Chicks are hatching now, so far got 163. Pap went out to see Geo. Boll; he had lost a horse, while back, cut lawn, planted out flowers, had nice shower rain. Bert [Bertille] went to euchre at Kammler’s given by Ladies Aid; not much crowd 4 tables euchre, 4 pinochle; had 6 points got glass dish, & towel 3rd prize playing bluey. Roland Rausch got the quilt, & Hy. Rittemeyer rug. & me [Bertille] the towel. Attendance prize Mrs. Marylu [unclear] Pickett.

Wednesday, April 27, 1938

Windy, not as hot. Bert [Bertille] sewed lettuce etc. Baked cream pie. Euchre & card party at Paderborn tonite; Bert [Bertille] went got dish, playing bluey had 2 games; Hy Kettler played for dance, not very much, no crowd. Elmer Parker, & Vincent Klein, have a birthday dance at Kammler’s tonight; Jake Schoenborn played Adm. 25 [cents] pretty good crowd. Rained a little this eve. Awful dust storm this afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Perry May were here this eve; till 11:30. The Wedding that was here at Hecker, by Fr. Aydt last Tues morn, was Walter Kunkel & Brauch girl. Joe daughter, both of Tipton, never were published, are anything, May said that. Harry Wittenauer was here this afternoon; on business.

Thursday, April 21, 1938

Nice day, warm. Cooked kettle soap. Pap went to Waterloo, with 20 bus. wheat @ 72 [cents], yesterday he got 68 [cents]. Price is 75 [cents]; he stopped at Henry’s also. Mrs. Cleveland was there to. Floyd is to get 1 lb. coffee on the Old Judge program by Susie. 3 persons on same song, policeman Song. I didn’t hear it on radio. Otto Geodelle of St. Louis, formerly of Waterloo, is in hospital, shot himself in head, but didn’t kill him, is in hospital. Pap went to see Hy. Feurer; about the signing of corn program. then he went to see Fred Weber by Smithton, about pigs. The Ladies Aid have a card party at Kammler’s tonite; Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came. Bert [Bertille] went along to euchre. Bert [Bertille] got first prize 11 points out of 14 games. got a straw rug, beautiful. Uncle [Fred] had 7 got box cocoa & A. [Aunt] Mary had 7 got napkins; not much of a crowd 7 tables euchre 3 or 4 pinochle, & bluey quite a few; not much at all.

Tuesday, March 1, 1938

Went out to U. [Uncle] Freds sawing wood again, had them yet for dinner, Joe Krebs sawed it. Bert [Bertille] washed the car & shine it this afternoon, cleaned chicken house & barn with the team today. Henry & Leona & Billy [Willis] were at Belleville, stopped in on way back she got winter coat. gray. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came went to euchre in school hall & large crowd. Leona Wittenauer got attendance prize $1. We didn’t get nothing. Bert [Bertille] had 7 points; Emil was at E. St. Louis stock yards today; was at euchre this eve.

Wednesday, Feb. 9, 1938

Beautiful day. Pap went up to woods. Rose [Rosalia] came this morn. helped quilt; Leo is butchering at Jake’s. Uncle Fred brought A. [Aunt] Mary up to help quilt this afternoon, he came this eve; had supper. Emil was here awhile. Al. Hoffmann came to see A. [Aunt] Mary. Bert [Bertille] went along home with Rose [Rosalia] with our Whip; went with them to Paderborn euchre, didn’t win nothing had 5 points; they had 5 points; they had a dance, also had been the priest was sick, couldn’t be there.

Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1937

Patched. Went to Belleville. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came up, went to euchre in School hall, given by Altar Sodality. Leo & Rose [Rosalia] came brought there mollasses [sic] down to Hy. Armstutz $1 gal. we played pinochle; warmer again today. Euchre in Waterloo tonite.

Thursday, Nov. 18, 1937

Uncle Fred birthday; 63 yrs. today. They came up butchered 139 lb. hog @ $8.40; finished at 1 ‘oclock, sausage out of kettle & everything done. Harry Wittenauer stopped in. The Farm Bureau have meeting & show tonite & school hall. Smithton have euchre. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary came this eve. & Bert [Bertille] went along to picture show in school hall, big crowd, showed pictures of 4h. club; from all over the county. Miss Werner of Hecker, leader of Busy Bee Club, has the most in county. Buddy Braun was here selling chances on box candy.
