Sunday, Aug. 15, 1937

Went to mass, took so long, he [priest?] was little mad this morn. somebody said something about him. The pinic [sic] brought in $523.44 clear. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile; went home. Leo & Rose came down, had supper, chicken, she brought squrril [sic – squirrel] along. Went to Firemen pinic [sic] & dance; large crowd Schmidts played. German band played in afternoon. Bert [Bertille] drawed no. for raffling quilts. Miss Mary Arnes & Edna Probst. Had all different stands gambling etc.

Sunday, Aug. 8, 1937

Went to early mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile, brought a watermelon along that they bought at Red Bud store; had real watermelon lunch, couldn’t eat half of it 28 lbs. it weighed. Ralph Wiegand stopped in & brought Rose Wedding present at tea kettle aluminum. Steve Rennecker came here awhile then went up to pinic [sic]. The Ladies Aid have there pinic [sic] today at Maniers Park; dance this eve. chicken supper. Uncle Fred & A. Mary, Leo & Rose came we ate watermelons then went to pinic [sic]; much larger crowd; quilt went to Ad. Rittmeyer’s girl, bed spread Hy Armstutz & pillow slip, I don’t know; It was awful cloudy, hot, thundering, but it didn’t rain very much, light shower this eve late.

Mrs. Staufenbiel went along to Red Bud mass. Yesterday was 25 Silver Wedding Ann. of Mr & Mrs Alb. Cleveland was announced over the radio, today is Alb. birthday. Fri nite Nic Mueths celebrated there 25 Silver Wedd. Ann. at Log Cabin by Red Bud invitation dance. We went to Uncle Freds for dinner & supper. They came up this eve. & Bert [Bertille] went along to church had benediction, tried the organ, it is not finished, were so many keys that never worked but is is wonderful now. Then we went to Paderborn to Totsch’s free dance, & what a crowd, Skaer Orch. The Wedd. anni. of Al. Clevelands went over the radio again this afternoon, german musci [sic], or polish hr; requested by Grover.

Went to mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stopped a little while. Henry & family & Virginia Cortner were here this afternoon, for lunch. We had a pretty nice rain this afternoon. Smithton Turner pinic [sic] today. Uncle Fred & A. Mary & Bert. [Bertille] went this eve.

Went to 6:30 mass. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary stayed awhile. Came up this afternoon, Bert [Bertille] went along to Millstadt German pinic [sic], seen St. Louis people dance a German Polka, sure was good; met a few people that we knew; came home had supper here, then went to Paderborn to Carrie’s fish fry Skaers Orch.; & what crowd, Floraville had to close down, everybody at Paderborn. Ray Neubarth & Buettner getting married at Waterloo today. Wiegands had free barn dance last nite musci [sic] by girls of Floraville, had pretty large crowd & hot.

Nice cool; went to 6:30 mass. Uncle Fred & A. Mary stopped awhile. We were home all day. This eve. went to see Washausen’s to see mule, they were here looked at mare this morn; didn’t just make a trade yet so far; near Burksville, we went to Waterloo, through Floraville & stopped at Leo’s Uncle Fred & A. Mary were there. They was in Smithton today. We stoped [sic] at Henry’s, they were at Waterloo all day.

Went to mass. Priest from St. Henry’s College had mass, high & solemn coummioun [sic – communion], graduating exercises, benediction & enroll of Scapulars; took till 9:30 when we got home. Henry & family & we all went to Leo & Rose’s this afternoon for supper. Leo’s sister was supposed to come for dinner, but they never come. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came Bert [Bertille] went along to church with her, graduation exercise, May Devotion & benediction.

Pentecost. Went to mass. Henry & family & Leo & Rose were here for dinner & supper; & Uncle Fred & A. Mary came this afternoon for supper, we took pictures over across the street by A. Mary’s. bridal wreath bush, that is blooming so nice. There is a concert in the Evangical [sic] church tonite, Lipperts children is in the band. Carl Armbruster of Smithton is again in Belleville hospital, had motorcycle accident Sat. nite on Waterloo road; broke his leg. Staheleber was also riding with his motorcycle but was farther ahead when it happened ran into truck or something.

Acenscion [sic] Holiday. Went to mass at 6 at Red Bud. Fr. Stern is very low received last sacrements [sic] Mon. Uncle Adam’s birthday 87 yrs. We went to Belleville, pap went to dentist, & we did shopping. Uncle Fred & A. [Aunt] Mary & Leo & Rose were all in there also, & lot of people from all over. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came planted cabbage plants 50 across the street. Miss Mildred Gambach is at Belleville hospital operated on. Sly. Kabureck is again at home. Brauns from Eliza Ball’s house moved to W. Monike’s house last week. For one day at least it didn’t rain so far. Uncle Fred & A. Mary, Henry & family, & Leo & Rose were all here this evening.

Pretty cool today, with some showers, went to Red Bud mass, went with Henry & family to Uncle Fred’s for dinner & supper. Leo & Rose were also over. Uncle Fred & A. Mary came. Bert [Bertille] went along to Floraville to Boeker’s Wedding dance, Boy! what a crowd; Girls played. Rained a little. We got in the ditch coming home, he drove along the side of the road on account of holes & oil, got in rut & went right in the ditch. Lee Gregson & Isd. Helfrich came along Lee took his tire chains & hooked on bumper & pulled it out backwards, Leo & Lee pushed, Isd. drove; would of never got out if he wouldn’t of pulled it out. Uncle put his chains on also.
