We went out to Uncle Fred’s, Aunt Mary’s birthday, we had dinner & supper, played cards had radio. Leona brought the kids up to stay all night here, Rose & Berti went along with them to Waterloo to Pautler’s to Laf. Thursday, Jan. 17, 1935
Fried in bacon. Henry & Leona went to Belleville, Billy [Willis] stayed here. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came this afternoon. We went to Donahue’s to Tipton Parish euchre party, played 10 games, we didn’t receive prizes, had 5 points; not much of a crowd, & no prizes; a quilt was raffled out & was won by Ruth May. Mr. Bill Kelley of Ruma, died will be buried tomorrow morning.

Henry & Leona & Emil, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary all helped butcher, finished today, killed two made summer sausage; weighed 250 & 215 lb. hogs. It rained a little last night & morning. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary went home this evening. Mrs. William Klotz is on the sick list, & pretty bad. Roy Staufenbiel’s have a baby girl born Sun. Eckert doctor.

Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary came, papa went along out to Henry’s, then they all went to E. St. Louis to the healer, Leona stayed in Waterloo. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed for supper; then we all went to Foster Pond to a birthday & tacky party. Ed Pabst brought corn. Burgdorf looked at the heifer, but didn’t offer no price on it. Hogs $8.00.

We went to Red Bud, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary was up, stayed for dinner, played cards this afternoon. Henry & family came this evening, had supper, played cards, we had chicken dinner & supper. The yearly account was read by Fr. Stern, this morning, 11 died, 2 born, 3 mix marriages & 2 Catholic, 8 entertainments, that is pinics [sic], euchres, plays. Most beautiful day, for the first of the year; cold last night, & warm today.

Papa & Rosalia took 2 hogs to Belleville. Henry & Leona went in with a calf. Kids stayed here. They also went over to E. St. Louis; came back, had dinner here. Eggs are 28¢ here. Hogs weighed 635 lbs. @ $7.00. Henry got $6.25 for his calf, 125 lbs.

Baked bread, put up the tree. We went to Waterloo this afternoon. Henry & family came this evening, Santa brought lot of presents; but he didn’t appear in person, he was at Wagner’s; Rosalia got prayer book, Berti bedroom slippers, pap also; from Henry & Leona.

Leona brought the teacher & pupils of Blackburn School up for the Christmas program at the Hecker School, Rosalia & Berti went to, it was real nice, Stana came too. We went to Belleville this afternoon. Eggs 26¢ today. Received a Christmas greeting from Josie Keller today. Papenberg boy’s got a red fox; hunting season.

Cleaned front room. Rose baked oatmeal cookies. Henry & Leona went to Belleville left Billy [Willis] here. Eggs 24¢ here. Mr. Eugene Metzger 34 of Floraville shot & killed himself at the home of his sister Mrs. Freida Gerhard, 2 miles south of Floraville; funeral to be held Sat. afternoon, from Millstadt chapel to Floraville Cemetery; he wasn’t married, was sickly & unemployed in St. Louis for 2 yrs. The streets are awful icey [sic] at present; cars pass with chains, several big trucks were stuck up at Belleville Henry had said. Hecker people were shopping there today, Weigands, Klotz’s, Watchels, Lauts etc. The children of the Catholic School is having there Christmas program tonight at the hall, everybody invited Adm. 10¢. Mr. George Hepp celebrated his 101 yr. birthday last Friday, but is confined to his bed, suffering from a stroke recently. Mr. Henry Kessler left for Birmingham Ala. were he will spent Christmas with his sons there. The paper says more snow. & 20 degrees tonight.

We butchered 2 hogs; for Uncle Fred; Henry & family were also up, Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed in the evening, sugarcured hams & played cards, made carmel [sic] cookies. Virgil Eichenseer was here wanted to sell ticket for the school children’s play Thurs. nite; Oliver Ruhel was here to get signers to for the hog contract again. Uncle Freds hog weighed 245 lbs. @ $6.35. There is a ladies picture in the paper, where she is yawning, continously for 140 hrs; can’t stop. Clifford was here, told Henry, he has a colt for sale, he went & looked at it.
