They say today is Joe & Lee Gregson’s birthday, I thought it was on the 10th. Yesterday was to be the church picnic at Round Prairie Church. I guess they had it, I don’t know, it was to be last Sun. but they postponed it on account of rain, but it was worse yesterday. Papa went up to Hecker with the machine this morning to get some laying mash for the chickens. Victor Eichenseer was here and looked at the valve in the tank in the basement. Henry came up this morning too. He said the roads weren’t bad only if you meet some one, he had chains on. We sold 57 lbs. springs [chickens], 50 lbs at .20¢ and 7 lbs. at .18¢. Papa took up this afternoon, and also 4 doz. eggs at .25¢. It was raining all most all day. We got 2 socks of laying mash so for now yesterday we found 21 eggs. We patched stockings today while it was raining. Rosalia went to get the paper this evening. Miss Lucille Miller won the Chev. Roadster last Sat. night for having the most votes of the popularity contest.

We all went to first mass this morning at 8 o’clock Leona and her two girl friends, Miss Ida Whitkamp, & Miss Lena Koopman. Uncle Fred & Aunt Mary stayed for lunch. Second mass is from now until 10:15. Henry came up for that. He helped to move the piano from church over to the new school hall. Next Sun. night will be the first moving picture shown in the hall. Steve Rennecker was over a little while this evening. It rain this afternoon from about 3 until 5:30, showers, it sure was nice & we need it too. Robert Laut couldn’t get his machine started so Perry Klotz pulled him down the hard road a piece until it started. George Wagner’s were up at Floraville last night. Jake Mehrmans had a dance, it also was Bernice Mehrmans birthday. Dan Geodell furnished mass.

Today is Frank Birkner’s & Grover Cleveland’s birthday’s. There is going to to be a dance at Frank Birkner’s, but we are not invited. Uncle Fred was asked to furnish the music. Bertille got the mail this evening. There were girls from Waterloo that took a trip to Europe. I seen in the paper that Anselm Hellmar have a little baby boy born last Monday. I seen that E.J. Brand from Birmingham, Alabama order his paper for another year, The Waterloo Times.
Thursday, Sept. 4, 1930
Today is Rosalia’s birthday, she is 19 years old. Bertille baked 3 birthday cakes this morning. Papa went over to Freeburg this morning & got some tiling for a well. We are having chicken soup for dinner. Papa went out in the Blackjacks to see a man by the name of Hover this afternoon. This evening Uncle Fred, Aunt Mary, Christ Buehler’s family & Henry & family were all here celebrating Rosalia’s birthday, music was played & watermelons, cakes, doughnuts, lemonade were the refreshments. There was a man here this afternoon trying to sell watermelon, he came from Sparta. But we didn’t buy any because we already had two.

Today is “Billy” Kammler’s birthday. He is 2 yrs. old. Gus Hempe and a man from St. Joe were here this afternoon & got our little colt for $40.00. They didn’t have it so nice to load her, she wasn’t used to any trucks. They got her on & away they went. Papa & Rosalia went out to Henry’s to got a load of wheat, then Papa went to Red Bud with it. Mr. & Mrs. Mike Wedel had a accident near by Waterloo, when they were crowded off of the hard road. The Hecker School will open on Tuesday, Sept. 2 Gregory Mcarthy teacher. Broad Hollow on Sept. 2 by Miss Mary Havey teacher. McQuillen School Sept. 2 by Miss Lela Deuker teacher. Hirst School Sept. 2 by Miss Ethel Deuker teacher. Today is Eunice Blackburn’s birthday. She is going to be 15 years old. It is also Hilda Staunbiel’s birthday. I believe there is a bunch going to Hilda’s first and then afterwards go to Blackburns. We have an invitation, but we aren’t going. It rained this afternoon. There were 2 nice rainbows in the East. Bertille went & got the paper this evening. She priced the chickens, heavy’s are .22 and leghorns are .18 and .15. Lard is .10¢. George Wagner has his garage finished now. There was a big crowd at Blackburn’s.

Rosalia & Bertille washed, ironed, patched, baked pie this morning. Papa went up in the woods to get a load of gravel for our road, but he got stuck in the branch & he called for Rosalia to come up with the chevrolet & bring along the ax and the chain along. Bertille made a chicken for dinner, we had soup. Today is Melissa Wiegand’s birthday. We all went there this evening. There sure was a crowd there, lemonade, cake were the refreshments. They had a cake baked with 23 candles on. It is also Mrs. Ben Heyl’s birthday. Clevelands were there until about 10 o’clock then them & Heyls came to Wiegands. Nick Mueth furnished music, but his music broke so Gus Blackburn got his. Uncle Fred brought Aunt Mary up this afternoon & he went back home again. Aunt Mary was here for supper. I have seen in the paper that Dr. Eckert was fined $5 & costs for disturbing the peace, about his father. He is to have a trial today. It looks awful cloudy.

Papa & Rosalia took a load of wheat to Red Bud this morning & got .82¢ a bu. for it. Today is Mrs. Ronenberg’s birthday. They are to have a surprise party tomorrow night. It is also Mr. & Mrs. Adam Eckerts wedding anniversary. Last Monday Mr. & Mrs. Fred Doyle got a little boy. They now have 2 boys. I seen in the paper that Mr. & Mrs. Joe Klingler have a little boy. Papa & Rosalia took another load of wheat to Red Bud this afternoon & got same price. Papa got his watch repaired, cost him $1.00. Papa brought a fish along this morning for dinner, it sure was good. It costs .30¢. It rained this evening, a little shower. Herzogs are moving Bill Herzog today & tomorrow.

I have seen the paper that Arthur Matlock from Waterloo have a little boy at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, it was born last Monday. Nick Schaefer’s second youngest daughter, Maggie, was taken to the hospital last Sat. night and was operated on for appendix. Henry Meng got his finger smashed between 2 large rocks, he now has his arm & fingers in a sling. The St. Louis baseball team played here Sunday with Hecker the score was 8 to 15 in favor of Hecker. It is reported that Clem Parker lost a valuable horse last Sat. from heat. Bertille was up town and got the paper this morning. Mrs. Gene Meckler from Waterloo, they took her to the Hospital at Red Bud. We baked cookies, washed, ironed, cleaned upstairs today. It is Albert Cleveland’s birthday today. Yesterday it was their wedding anniversary 18 years married & tomorrow night they are going to have a dance. Emma Braun brought Mrs. Rennecker home this evening. Papa & Rosalia went down to Geo. Vonderheit’s this afternoon and got the spring buggy home, what Papa bought for .30¢. Steve Rennecker and his wife were over this evening a little while. Roman Meng came over and told us that our colt was out, something was chasing it, I guess a dog. It ran through the wire fence, it has a cut on the breast & one on leg behind. We put some lard & turpentine on it right away. Mrs. Rennecker said that Mr. Dehn ain’t no better yet, no changes she said. Dr. Eckert’s father is awful bad sick too.

Today is Peter Melhauser’s sale by Burksville, Ill. Papa thought he was going. Today is also Clarence Pabsts birthday. The way they say there is a bunch going to surprise him tonight. Uncle Fred helped at the school today and Aunt Mary was here all day. Uncle Fred came down here for dinner then afterwards Papa went along up & worked at the school too all afternoon. We went out to Henry’s this morning. Rosalia & Bertille got a hair cut. We took some plums along too for jelly. This evening Wm. C. Heyl came & wanted his money for lime dust. Papa paid him $117.65 by check. Mamie & Clarence Eichenseer was down a little while this evening. Mamie said there was a big bunch went down to Clarence Pabst birthday. He is 22 years old today.
