Yesterday morning Henry Volkmann & wife while going home from church with the buggy met with a accident, there was a car coming from both directions, & the one drove to close & took the wheel off the buggy, it is just funny no one was hurt, & the buggy is altogether in a wreck, it happened almost in front Kuhn’s house, they settled it right there.  Bertille went to church this morning.  Papa & Rosalia went up in the woods.  Bertille went up to the school hall to see the play or rather moving picture show, given by the Cathestists [catechists] of New Mexico & Calif, Texas, it was good.  Tonight they will be in Paderborn.  The weather is sure funny, it rains, then the sun shines, real April & May Showers.  Harold Dueker is in St. Mary’s Elizabeth Hospital for appendix.  Rosalia & Bertille went up to Mamie’s took her along & then went to the show, the crowd increases every night, instead of giving the blanket away tonight, he is going to give 2 tomorrow night.  Vic. Eichenseer took his medicine & improved a lot.  Eggs are 12¢.

Thursday, Nov. 20, 1930

Bertille went to church this morning.  It rained last night & today too.  Bertille send an order to Chicago Mail Order this morning for Papa & Rosalia’s shoes.  $6.29.  I seen in the paper that Mrs. Jake Helfrich of Belleville is in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.  Henry Kern & family moved into Henry Braun’s place on Goose Alley this week.  George Reheis hurt his wrist with the hatchet while out carpeting, he now carries his arm in a sling.  It is getting awful cold again.

Friday, August 1, 1930

I have seen the paper that Arthur Matlock from Waterloo have a little boy at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, it was born last Monday.  Nick Schaefer’s second youngest daughter, Maggie, was taken to the hospital last Sat. night and was operated on for appendix.  Henry Meng got his finger smashed between 2 large rocks, he now has his arm & fingers in a sling.  The St. Louis baseball team played here Sunday with Hecker the score was 8 to 15 in favor of Hecker.  It is reported that Clem Parker lost a valuable horse last Sat. from heat.  Bertille was up town and got the paper this morning.  Mrs. Gene Meckler from Waterloo, they took her to the Hospital at Red Bud.  We baked cookies, washed, ironed, cleaned upstairs today.  It is Albert Cleveland’s birthday today.  Yesterday it was their wedding anniversary 18 years married & tomorrow night they are going to have a dance.  Emma Braun brought Mrs. Rennecker home this evening.  Papa & Rosalia went down to Geo. Vonderheit’s this afternoon and got the spring buggy home, what Papa bought for .30¢.  Steve Rennecker and his wife were over this evening a little while.  Roman Meng came over and told us that our colt was out, something was chasing it, I guess a dog.  It ran through the wire fence, it has a cut on the breast & one on leg behind.  We put some lard & turpentine on it right away.  Mrs. Rennecker said that Mr. Dehn ain’t no better yet, no changes she said.  Dr. Eckert’s father is awful bad sick too.

Friday, May 23, 1930

It rained last night.  Papa went out to see Mr. Statterman the man that lives were Julius Ambruster lived.  This afternoon he went up to Smithton to August Mueths place, it is getting sold this afternoon.  Miss Bertha Wolf of 414 E. McKinley Street died at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.  She was only 21 years old, she will be buried tomorrow afternoon.  I went to Blackburn school with her.  She was born March 24, 1909.  The Fahey twins, Stella and Marcella of St. Louis were home Sunday and celebrated their 19th birthday anniversary.  Bertille was at church this morning.  Eggs are .17¢ a dozen at Eichenseer’s store.  Henry & family were up this evening.  Henry sold his gray mare to Schneider from Smithton, for $10.00.

Wednesday, May 21, 1930

Today the Bishop comes to Hecker to confirm 37 children.  Bertille went up to church at 6:30 this morning.  Henry, Leona, Mrs. Jake Geodelle were at church too.  Robert, Floyd was here at our house.  They all had breakfast here.  At 9 o’clock we went to church again the Bishop came.  The people were to meet the Bishop at Philip Cortner’s place.  There were quite a few went out with their machine all decorated.  Leona got confirmed today.  Mrs. Jake Geodelle was Sponsor.  There were 14 priests there with the Bishop.  Papa & Rosalia went to Belleville this afternoon.  Eggs are .17¢.  There is going to be a dance at Rapp’s tonight, but we got no invitation so we won’t go.  Miss Bertha Wolf of Belleville is in St. Elizabeth’s Hospital is under surgical attention.  She lives at 414 East Mckinley Street.  Papa & Bertille went out to Henry’s this evening.  Bertille took her first automobile lesson.
